With reduced dimensionality, it is often easier to modify the properties of ultra-thin films than their bulk counterparts. Strain engineering, usually achieved by choosing appropriate substrates, has been proven effective in controlling the properties of perovskite oxide films. An emerging alternative route for developing new multifunctional perovskite is by modification of the oxygen octahedral structure. Here we report the control of structural oxygen octahedral rotation in ultra-thin perovskite SrRuO3 films by the deposition of a SrTiO3 capping layer, which can be lithographically patterned to achieve local control. Using a scanning Sagnac magnetic microscope, we show increase in the Curie temperature of SrRuO3 due to the suppression octahedral rotations revealed by the synchrotron x-ray diffraction. This capping-layer-based technique may open new possibilities for developing functional oxide materials.

Epitaxial strain is a proven route to enhancing the properties of complex oxides, however, the details of how the atomic structure accommodates strain are poorly understood due to the difficulty of measuring the oxygen positions in thin films. We pre sent a general methodology for determining the atomic structure of strained oxide films via x-ray diffraction, which we demonstrate using LaNiO3 films. The oxygen octahedral rotations and distortions have been quantified by comparing the intensities of half-order Bragg peaks, arising from the two unit cell periodicity of the octahedral rotations, with the calculated structure factor. Combining ab initio density functional calculations with these experimental results, we determine systematically how strain modifies the atomic structure of this functional oxide.
We introduce a dinstint approach to engineer a topologically protected surface state of a topological insulator. By covering the surface of a topological insulator, Bi2Te2Se, with a Bi monolayer film, the original surface state is completely removed and three new spin helical surface states, originating from the Bi film, emerge with different dispersion and spin polarization, through a strong electron hybridization. These new states play the role of topological surface states keeping the bulk topological nature intact. This mechanism provides a way to create various different types of topologically protected electron channels on top of a single topological insulator, possibly with tailored properties for various applications.
The Curie temperature is one of the most fundamental physical properties of ferromagnetic materials and can be described by Weiss molecular field theory with the exchange interaction of neighboring atoms. Recently, the electric-field-induced modulati on of the Curie temperature has been demonstrated in transition metals. This can be interpreted as indirect evidence for the electrical modulation of exchange coupling. However, the scenario has not yet been experimentally verified. Here, we demonstrate the electrical control of exchange coupling in cobalt film from direct magnetization measurements. We find that the reduction in magnetization with temperature, which is caused by thermal spin wave excitation and scales with Blochs law, clearly depends on the applied electric field. Furthermore, we confirm that the correlation between the electric-field-induced modulation of the Curie temperature and that of exchange coupling follows Weiss molecular field theory.

We study the ultrafast demagnetization of Ni/NiMn and Co/NiMn ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic bilayer systems after excitation by a laser pulse. We probe the ferromagnetic order of Ni and Co using magnetic circular dichroism in time-resolved pump--pr obe resonant X-ray reflectivity. Tuning the sample temperature across the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of the NiMn layer allows to investigate effects induced by the magnetic order of the latter. The presence of antiferromagnetic order in NiMn speeds up the demagnetization of the ferromagnetic layer, which is attributed to bidirectional laser-induced superdiffusive spin currents between the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic layer.

Using first principle calculations we showed that the Curie temperature of manganites thin films can be increased by far more than an order of magnitude by applying appropriate strains. Our main breakthrough is that the control of the orbital orderin g responsible for the spectacular $T_C$ increase cannot be imposed by the substrate only. Indeed, the strains, first applied by the substrate, need to be maintained over the growth direction by the alternation of the manganite layers with another appropriate material. Following these theoretical findings, we synthesized such super-lattices and verified our theoretical predictions.
