Traditional Bag-of-visual Words (BoWs) model is commonly generated with many steps including local feature extraction, codebook generation, and feature quantization, etc. Those steps are relatively independent with each other and are hard to be jointly optimized. Moreover, the dependency on hand-crafted local feature makes BoWs model not effective in conveying high-level semantics. These issues largely hinder the performance of BoWs model in large-scale image applications. To conquer these issues, we propose an End-to-End BoWs (E$^2$BoWs) model based on Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN). Our model takes an image as input, then identifies and separates the semantic objects in it, and finally outputs the visual words with high semantic discriminative power. Specifically, our model firstly generates Semantic Feature Maps (SFMs) corresponding to different object categories through convolutional layers, then introduces Bag-of-Words Layers (BoWL) to generate visual words for each individual feature map. We also introduce a novel learning algorithm to reinforce the sparsity of the generated E$^2$BoWs model, which further ensures the time and memory efficiency. We evaluate the proposed E$^2$BoWs model on several image search datasets including CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, MIRFLICKR-25K and NUS-WIDE. Experimental results show that our method achieves promising accuracy and efficiency compared with recent deep learning based retrieval works.

In this paper, we report state-of-the-art results on LibriSpeech among end-to-end speech recognition models without any external training data. Our model, Jasper, uses only 1D convolutions, batch normalization, ReLU, dropout, and residual connections . To improve training, we further introduce a new layer-wise optimizer called NovoGrad. Through experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed deep architecture performs as well or better than more complex choices. Our deepest Jasper variant uses 54 convolutional layers. With this architecture, we achieve 2.95% WER using a beam-search decoder with an external neural language model and 3.86% WER with a greedy decoder on LibriSpeech test-clean. We also report competitive results on the Wall Street Journal and the Hub500 conversational evaluation datasets.
Mainstream object detectors based on the fully convolutional network has achieved impressive performance. While most of them still need a hand-designed non-maximum suppression (NMS) post-processing, which impedes fully end-to-end training. In this pa per, we give the analysis of discarding NMS, where the results reveal that a proper label assignment plays a crucial role. To this end, for fully convolutional detectors, we introduce a Prediction-aware One-To-One (POTO) label assignment for classification to enable end-to-end detection, which obtains comparable performance with NMS. Besides, a simple 3D Max Filtering (3DMF) is proposed to utilize the multi-scale features and improve the discriminability of convolutions in the local region. With these techniques, our end-to-end framework achieves competitive performance against many state-of-the-art detectors with NMS on COCO and CrowdHuman datasets. This paper proposes an end-to-end learning framework for multiview stereopsis. We term the network SurfaceNet. It takes a set of images and their corresponding camera parameters as input and directly infers the 3D model. The key advantage of the fram ework is that both photo-consistency as well geometric relations of the surface structure can be directly learned for the purpose of multiview stereopsis in an end-to-end fashion. SurfaceNet is a fully 3D convolutional network which is achieved by encoding the camera parameters together with the images in a 3D voxel representation. We evaluate SurfaceNet on the large-scale DTU benchmark.
Odometry is of key importance for localization in the absence of a map. There is considerable work in the area of visual odometry (VO), and recent advances in deep learning have brought novel approaches to VO, which directly learn salient features fr om raw images. These learning-based approaches have led to more accurate and robust VO systems. However, they have not been well applied to point cloud data yet. In this work, we investigate how to exploit deep learning to estimate point cloud odometry (PCO), which may serve as a critical component in point cloud-based downstream tasks or learning-based systems. Specifically, we propose a novel end-to-end deep parallel neural network called DeepPCO, which can estimate the 6-DOF poses using consecutive point clouds. It consists of two parallel sub-networks to estimate 3-D translation and orientation respectively rather than a single neural network. We validate our approach on KITTI Visual Odometry/SLAM benchmark dataset with different baselines. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves good performance in terms of pose accuracy.
Due to the simple design pipeline, end-to-end (E2E) neural models for speech enhancement (SE) have attracted great interest. In order to improve the performance of the E2E model, the locality and temporal sequential properties of speech should be eff iciently taken into account when modelling. However, in most current E2E models for SE, these properties are either not fully considered or are too complex to be realized. In this paper, we propose an efficient E2E SE model, termed WaveCRN. In WaveCRN, the speech locality feature is captured by a convolutional neural network (CNN), while the temporal sequential property of the locality feature is modeled by stacked simple recurrent units (SRU). Unlike a conventional temporal sequential model that uses a long short-term memory (LSTM) network, which is difficult to parallelize, SRU can be efficiently parallelized in calculation with even fewer model parameters. In addition, in order to more effectively suppress the noise components in the input noisy speech, we derive a novel restricted feature masking (RFM) approach that performs enhancement on the feature maps in the hidden layers; this is different from the approach that applies the estimated ratio mask on the noisy spectral features, which is commonly used in speech separation methods. Experimental results on speech denoising and compressed speech restoration tasks confirm that with the lightweight architecture of SRU and the feature-mapping-based RFM, WaveCRN performs comparably with other state-of-the-art approaches with notably reduced model complexity and inference time.
