The anomalous features in diffraction patterns first observed by Wood over a century ago have been the subject of many investigations, both experimental and theoretical. The sharp, narrow structures - and the large resonances with which they are sometimes associated - arise in numerous studies in optics and photonics. In this paper we present an analytical method to study diffracted fields of optically thin gratings that highlights the nonanalyticities associated with the anomalies. Using this approach we can immediately derive diffracted fields for any polarization in a compact notation. While our equations are approximate, they fully respect energy conservation in the electromagnetic field, and describe the large exchanges of energy between incident and diffracted fields that can arise even for thin gratings.
Optical properties of a metasurface which can be considered a monolayer of two classical uniaxial metamaterials, parallel-plate and nanorod arrays, are investigated. It is shown that such metasurface acts as an ultimately thin sub-50 nm wave plate. T
3D ED is an effective technique to determine the structures of submicron- or nano-sized crystals. In this paper, we implemented energy-filtered 3D ED using a Gatan Energy Filter (GIF) in both selected area electron diffraction mode and micro/nanoprob
The GaAs-based material system is well-known for the implementation of InAs quantum dots (QDs) with outstanding optical properties. However, these dots typically emit at a wavelength of around 900nm. The insertion of a metamorphic buffer (MMB) can sh
All-reflective interferometer configurations have been proposed for the next generation of gravitational wave detectors, with diffractive elements replacing transmissive optics. However, an additional phase noise creates more stringent conditions for
Measurement modalities in Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) rely on finding signal from a single nanoscale crystal object, which satisfies the Bragg condition among a large number of arbitrarily oriented nanocrystals. However, even when the s
