Modulational instabilities play a key role in a wide range of nonlinear optical phenomena, leading e.g. to the formation of spatial and temporal solitons, rogue waves and chaotic dynamics. Here we experimentally demonstrate the existence of a modulational instability in condensates of cavity polaritons, arising from the strong coupling of cavity photons with quantum well excitons. For this purpose we investigate the spatiotemporal coherence properties of polariton condensates in GaAs-based microcavities under continuous-wave pumping. The chaotic behavior of the instability results in a strongly reduced spatial and temporal coherence and a significantly inhomogeneous density. Additionally we show how the instability can be tamed by introducing a periodic potential so that condensation occurs into negative mass states, leading to largely improved coherence and homogeneity. These results pave the way to the exploration of long-range order in dissipative quantum fluids of light within a controlled platform.

We develop a theory for the dynamics of the density matrix describing a multimode polariton condensate. In such a condensate several single-particle orbitals become highly occupied, due to stimulated scattering from reservoirs of high-energy excitons . A generic few-parameter model for the system leads to a Lindblad equation which includes saturable pumping, decay, and condensate interactions. We show how this theory can be used to obtain the population distributions, and the time-dependent first- and second-order coherence functions, in such a multimode condensate. As a specific application, we consider a polaritonic Josephson junction, formed from a double-well potential. We obtain the population distributions, emission line shapes, and widths (first-order coherence functions), and predict the dephasing time of the Josephson oscillations.

We observe for the first time two-photon excited condensation of exciton-polaritons. The angle-resolved photoluminescence (PL) from the Lower Polariton (LP) ground state in our planar GaAs-based microcavity structure exhibits a clear intensity thresh old as a function of increased two-photon excitation power, coinciding with an interaction-induced blueshift and a narrowing of spectral linewidth, characteristic of the transition from a thermal distribution of lower polaritons to polariton condensation. Two-Photon Absorption (TPA) is evidenced in the quadratic dependence of the input-output curves below and above the threshold region. Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) is ruled out by both this threshold behavior and by scanning the pump photon energy and observing a lack of dependence of the LP emission peak energy. Our results pave the way towards realization of a polariton-based stimulated THz radiation source, stemming from the dipole-allowed transition from the Quantum Well (QW) 2p dark exciton state to the 1s-exciton-based LP ground state, as theoretically predicted in [A. V. Kavokin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 197401 (2012)].

We report on the engineering of a non-dispersive (flat) energy band in a geometrically frustrated lattice of micro-pillar optical cavities. By taking advantage of the non-hermitian nature of our system, we achieve bosonic condensation of exciton-pola ritons into the flat band. Due to the infinite effective mass in such band, the condensate is highly sensitive to disorder and fragments into localized modes reflecting the elementary eigenstates produced by geometric frustration. This realization offers a novel approach to studying coherent phases of light and matter under the controlled interplay of frustration, interactions and dissipation.
We present a study of the Rayleigh-Taylor unstable regime of accretion onto rotating magnetized stars in a set of high grid resolution three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations performed in low-viscosity discs. We find that the bou ndary between the stable and unstable regimes is determined almost entirely by the fastness parameter omega_s=Omega_star/Omega_K(r_m), where Omega_star is the angular velocity of the star and Omega_K(r_m) is the angular velocity of the Keplerian disc at the disc-magnetosphere boundary r=r_m. We found that accretion is unstable if omega_s < 0.6. Accretion through instabilities is present in stars with different magnetospheric sizes. However, only in stars with relatively small magnetospheres, r_m/R_star < 7, do the unstable tongues produce chaotic hot spots on the stellar surface and irregular light-curves. At even smaller values of the fastness parameter, omega_s < 0.45, multiple irregular tongues merge, forming one or two ordered unstable tongues that rotate with the angular frequency of the inner disc. This transition occurs in stars with even smaller magnetospheres, r_m/R_star < 4.2. Most of our simulations were performed at a small tilt of the dipole magnetosphere, Theta=5 degrees, and a small viscosity parameter alpha=0.02. Test simulations at higher alpha values show that many more cases become unstable, and the light-curves become even more irregular. Test simulations at larger tilts of the dipole Theta show that instability is present, however, accretion in two funnel streams dominates if Theta > 15 degrees. The results of these simulations can be applied to accreting magnetized stars with relatively small magnetospheres: Classical T Tauri stars, accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, and cataclysmics variables.
We predict the existence of non-Hermitian topologically protected end states in a one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensate lattice, where topological transitions are driven by the laser pump pattern. We show that the number of end states can be d escribed by a Chern number and a topological invariant based on the Wilson loop. We find that such transitions arise due to {it enforced exceptional points} which can be predicted directly from the bulk Bloch wave functions. This allows us to establish a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence for non-Hermitian systems and to compute the phase diagram of an open chain analytically. Finally, we demonstrate topological lasing of a single end-mode in a realistic model of a microcavity lattice.
