The use of chiral skyrmions, which are nanoscale vortex-like spin textures, as movable data bit carriers forms the basis of a recently proposed concept for magnetic solid-state memory. In this concept, skyrmions are considered to be unique localized spin textures, which are used to encode data through the quantization of different distances between identical skyrmions on a guiding nanostripe. However, the conservation of distances between highly mobile and interacting skyrmions is difficult to implement in practice. Here, we report the direct observation of another type of theoretically-predicted localized magnetic state, which is referred to as a chiral bobber (ChB), using quantitative off-axis electron holography. We show that ChBs can coexist together with skyrmions. Our results suggest a novel approach for data encoding, whereby a stream of binary data representing a sequence of ones and zeros can be encoded via a sequence of skyrmions and bobbers. The need to maintain defined distances between data bit carriers is then not required. The proposed concept of data encoding promises to expedite the realization of a new generation of magnetic solid-state memory.

The melting temperature ($T_m$) of a solid is generally determined by the pressure applied to it, or indirectly by its density ($n$) through the equation of state. This remains true even for helium solidscite{wilk:67}, where quantum effects often lea d to unusual propertiescite{ekim:04}. In this letter we present experimental evidence to show that for a two dimensional (2D) solid formed by electrons in a semiconductor sample under a strong perpendicular magnetic fieldcite{shay:97} ($B$), the $T_m$ is not controlled by $n$, but effectively by the textit{quantum correlation} between the electrons through the Landau level filling factor $ u$=$nh/eB$. Such melting behavior, different from that of all other known solids (including a classical 2D electron solid at zero magnetic fieldcite{grim:79}), attests to the quantum nature of the magnetic field induced electron solid. Moreover, we found the $T_m$ to increase with the strength of the sample-dependent disorder that pins the electron solid.

Graphene SU(4) quantum Hall symmetry is extended to SO(8), permitting analytical solutions for graphene in a magnetic field that break SU(4) spontaneously. We recover standard graphene SU(4) physics as one limit, but find new phases and new propertie s that may be relevant for understanding the ground state. The graphene SO(8) symmetry is found to be isomorphic to one that occurs extensively in nuclear structure physics, and very similar to one that describes high-temperature superconductors, suggesting deep mathematical connections among these physically-different fermionic systems.

We present a comprehensive experimental investigation of Yb magnetic dimers in Yb$_{0.04}$Y$_{0.96}$AlO$_3$, an Yb-doped Yttrium Aluminum Perovskite (YAP) YAlO$_3$ by means of specific heat, magnetization and high-resolution inelastic neutron scatter ing (INS) measurements. In our sample, the Yb ions are randomly distributed over the lattice and $sim 7$% of Yb ions form quantum dimers due to nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling along the $c$-axis. At zero field, the dimer formation manifests itself in an appearance of an inelastic peak at $Delta approx 0.2$~meV in the INS spectrum and a Schottky-like anomaly in the specific heat. The structure factor of the INS peak exhibits a cosine modulation along the $L$ direction, in agreement with the $c$-axis nearest-neighbor intra-dimer coupling. A careful fitting of the low-temperature specific heat shows that the excited state is a degenerate triplet, which indicates a surprisingly small anisotropy of the effective Yb-Yb exchange interaction despite the low crystal symmetry and anisotropic magnetic dipole contribution, in agreement with previous reports for the Yb parent compound, YbAlO$_3$ [arXiv:1904.11513, arXiv:1902.04112], and in contrast to Yb$_2$Pt$_2$Pb [arXiv:1606.01309, arXiv:1907.01067]. The obtained results are precisely reproduced by analytical calculations for the Yb dimers.
We present a simple nanodevice that can operate in two modes: i) three-state memory and ii) reading device. The nanodevice is fabricated with an array of ordered triangular-shaped nanomagnets embedded in a superconducting thin film. The input signal is ac current and the output signal is dc voltage. Vortex ratchet effect in combination with out of plane magnetic anisotropy of the nanomagnets is the background physics which governs the nanodevice performance.

The local structure about the Mn site in the half doped system La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 was measured in magnetic fields up 10 T to probe the melting of the charge ordered state. Examination of the Mn-O and Mn-Mn correlations reveal three distinct regions in th e structure-field diagram. A broad region with weak field dependence (mainly antiferromatnetic phase below 7.5 T), a narrow-mixed phase region near ~ 8.5 T followed by a ferromagnetic phase region with strong field-structure coupling. At high field the Mn-O radial distribution becomes Gaussian and the Mn-Mn correlations are enhanced - consistent with the dominance of a ferromagnetic phase. The exponential change in resistivity in the first region (observed in transport measurements) is dominated by the reordering of the moments on the Mn sites from CE type antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order with only a weak change in the local distortions of the MnO6 octahedra.
