Topological semimetals have been at the forefront of experimental and theoretical attention in condensed matter physics. Among these, recently discovered Weyl semimetals have a dispersion described by a three-dimensional Dirac cone, which is at the root of exotic physics such as the chiral anomaly in magnetotransport. In a time reversal symmetric (TRS) Weyl semimetal film, the confinement gap gives the quasiparticles a mass, while TRS is preserved by having an even number of valleys with opposite masses. The film can be tuned through a topological phase transition by a gate electric field. In this work, we present a theoretical study of the quantum corrections to the conductivity of a topological semimetal thin film, which is governed by the complex interplay of the chiral band structure, mass term, and scalar and spin-orbit scattering. We study scalar and spin-orbit scattering mechanisms on the same footing, demonstrating that they have a strong qualitative and quantitative impact on the conductivity correction. We show that, due to the spin structure of the matrix Greens functions, terms linear in the extrinsic spin-orbit scattering are present in the Bloch and momentum relaxation times, whereas previous works had identified corrections starting from the second order. In the limit of small quasiparticle mass, the terms linear in the impurity spin-orbit coupling lead to a potentially observable density dependence in the weak antilocalization correction. Moreover, when the mass term is around 30 percent of the linear Dirac terms, the system is in the unitary symmetry class with zero quantum correction and switching the extrinsic spin-orbit scattering drives the system to the weak antilocalization. We discuss the crossover between the weak localization and weak antilocalization regimes in terms of the singlet and triplet Cooperon channels, tuning the spin-orbit scattering strength.

We consider the effective coupling between impurity spins on surfaces of a thin-film Weyl semimetal within Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) theory. If the spins are on the same surface, their coupling reflects the anisotropy and the spin-momentu m locking of the Fermi arcs. By contrast when the spins are on opposite surfaces, their coupling is mediated by the Fermi arcs as well as by bulk states. In this case the coupling is both surprisingly strong and strongly thickness dependent, with a maximum at an optimum thickness. We demonstrate our results using analytical solutions of states in the thin-film geometry, as well using a two-surface recursive Greens function analysis of the tight-binding model.
The magneto-thermoelectric properties of Heusler compound thin films are very diverse. Here, we discuss the anomalous Nernst response of Co$_2$MnGa thin films. We systematically study the anomalous Nernst coefficient as a function of temperature, and we show that unlike the anomalous Hall effect, the anomalous Nernst effect in Co$_2$MnGa strongly varies with temperature. We exploit the on-chip thermometry technique to quantify the thermal gradient, which enables us to directly evaluate the anomalous Nernst coefficient. We compare these results to a reference CoFeB thin film. We show that the 50-nm-thick Co$_2$MnGa films exhibit a large anomalous Nernst effect of -2$mu$V/K at 300 K, whereas the 10-nm-thick Co$_2$MnGa film exhibits a significantly smaller anomalous Nernst coefficient despite having similar volume magnetizations. These findings suggest that the microscopic origin of the anomalous Nernst effect in Co$_2$MnGa is complex and may contain contributions from skew-scattering, side-jump or intrinsic Berry phase. In any case, the large anomalous Nernst coefficent of Co$_2$MnGa thin films at room temperature makes this material system a very promising candidate for efficient spin-caloritronic devices.
There is an immense effort in search for various types of Weyl semimetals, of which the most fundamental phase consists of the minimal number of i.e. two Weyl points, but is hard to engineer in solids. Here we demonstrate how such fundamental Weyl se mimetal can be realized in a maneuverable optical Raman lattice, with which the three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling is synthesised for ultracold atoms. In addition, a new novel Weyl phase with coexisting Weyl nodal points and nodal ring is also predicted here, and is shown to be protected by nontrivial linking numbers. We further propose feasible techniques to precisely resolve 3D Weyl band topology through 2D equilibrium and dynamical measurements. This work leads to the first realization of the most fundamental Weyl semimetal band and the 3D SO coupling for ultracold quantum gases, which are respectively the significant issues in the condensed matter and ultracold atom physics.
This study reports the magnetization switching induced by spin-orbit torque (SOT) from the spin current generated in Co2MnGa magnetic Weyl semimetal (WSM) thin films. We deposited epitaxial Co2MnGa thin films with highly B2-ordered structure on MgO(0 01) substrates. The SOT was characterized by harmonic Hall measurements in a Co2MnGa/Ti/CoFeB heterostructure and a relatively large spin Hall efficiency of -7.8% was obtained. The SOT-induced magnetization switching of the perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB layer was further demonstrated using the structure. The symmetry of second harmonic signals, thickness dependence of spin Hall efficiency, and shift of anomalous Hall loops under applied currents were also investigated. This study not only contributes to the understanding of the mechanisms of spin-current generation from magnetic-WSM-based heterostructures, but also paves a way for the applications of magnetic WSMs in spintronic devices.
Spin orbit coupling provides a mechanism to lock the momentum of electron to its spin degree, recent years was revealed to be essential in arousing many novel physical behaviors. SrIrO3 is a typical metallic member of the strong spin orbit coupling i ridate family. Its orthorhombic phase was confirmed as a particular spin orbit coupling assistant electron correlated semimetal with small electron and hole pockets, and was supposed to host versatile topological phases, with prospect of opening a new topological matter field based on oxides. The existing experiments have demonstrated that orthorhombic SrIrO3 can be easily synthesized at two dimensional scale films under the substrate lattice constraint, and the films display Fermi-liquid behavior in high temperature and generally two dimensional weak localization resulted metal insulator transition. The properties of orthorhombic SrIrO3 film are sensitive to the rotation and tilting angle, as well as the interlayer coupling of the IrO6 octahedras, consequently can be tuned through substrate strain engineering and size scale. For example, the film was approached a state similar to Sr2IrO4 at the ultrathin limit to several unit cell, becoming a canted antiferromagnetic semiconductor/insulator. The existing knowledges suggest urgent demands of researches on the superlattices constructed with orthorhombic SrIrO3, for further understanding the evolution mechanism of the electron structure, and so the relevant magnetic state and topological phases in the orthorhombic SrIrO3 and its family.
