The positive-parity nucleon spectrum is studied in 2 + 1 flavour lattice QCD in an attempt to discover novel low-lying energy eigenstates in the region of the Roper resonance. In this work, we employ standard three-quark interpolating fields and introduce new local five-quark meson-baryon operators that hold the possibility of revealing new states that have been missed in previous studies. Motivated by phenomenological arguments, five-quark interpolators based on the $sigma{N}$, $pi{N}$ and $a_0{N}$ channels are constructed. Despite the introduction of qualitatively different operators, no novel energy levels are extracted near the regime of the Roper resonance.

Systems with the quantum numbers of up to twelve charged and neutral pseudoscalar mesons, as well as one-, two-, and three-nucleon systems, are studied using dynamical lattice quantum chromodynamics and quantum electrodynamics (QCD+QED) calculations and effective field theory. QED effects on hadronic interactions are determined by comparing systems of charged and neutral hadrons after tuning the quark masses to remove strong isospin breaking effects. A non-relativistic effective field theory, which perturbatively includes finite-volume Coulomb effects, is analyzed for systems of multiple charged hadrons and found to accurately reproduce the lattice QCD+QED results. QED effects on charged multi-hadron systems beyond Coulomb photon exchange are determined by comparing the two- and three-body interaction parameters extracted from the lattice QCD+QED results for charged and neutral multi-hadron systems.

Lattice QCD has matured to a degree where it is now possible to study excited hadrons as they truly appear in nature, as short-lived resonant enhancements decaying into multiple possible final states. Through variational analysis of matrices of corre lation functions computed with large bases of interpolating fields it has proven possible to extract many excited state energy levels, and these can be used to constrain the hadron-hadron scattering amplitudes in which hadron resonances can be observed. Recent progress is illustrated with several examples including coupled-channel scattering in the $pi eta, Koverline{K}$ and $pipi, Koverline{K}, etaeta$ systems in which the $a_0, f_0$ scalar mesons appear.

A simulation of quenched QCD with the overlap Dirac operator has been completed using 100 Wilson gauge configurations at beta = 6 on an 18^3 x 64 lattice and at beta = 5.85 on a 14^3 x 48 lattice, both in Landau gauge. We present results for light me son and baryon masses, meson final state wave functions, and other observables, as well as some details on the numerical techniques that were used. Our results indicate that scaling violations, if any, are small. We also present an analysis of diquark correlations using the quark propagators generated in our simulation.

Recent progress in lattice QCD calculations of nucleon structure will be presented. Calculations of nucleon matrix elements and form factors have long been difficult to reconcile with experiment, but with advances in both methodology and computing re sources, this situation is improving. Some calculations have produced agreement with experiment for key observables such as the axial charge and electromagnetic form factors, and the improved understanding of systematic errors will help to increase confidence in predictions of unmeasured quantities. The long-omitted disconnected contributions are now seeing considerable attention and some recent calculations of them will be discussed.
The structure of neutrons, protons, and other strongly interacting particles is now being calculated in full, unquenched lattice QCD with quark masses entering the chiral regime. This talk describes selected examples, including the nucleon axial char ge, structure functions, electromagnetic form factors, the origin of the nucleon spin, the transverse structure of the nucleon, and the nucleon to Delta transition form factor.
