The ability to amplify or reduce subtle image changes over time is useful in contexts such as video editing, medical video analysis, product quality control and sports. In these contexts there is often large motion present which severely distorts current video amplification methods that magnify change linearly. In this work we propose a method to cope with large motions while still magnifying small changes. We make the following two observations: i) large motions are linear on the temporal scale of the small changes; ii) small changes deviate from this linearity. We ignore linear motion and propose to magnify acceleration. Our method is pure Eulerian and does not require any optical flow, temporal alignment or region annotations. We link temporal second-order derivative filtering to spatial acceleration magnification. We apply our method to moving objects where we show motion magnification and color magnification. We provide quantitative as well as qualitative evidence for our method while comparing to the state-of-the-art.

The view synthesis problem--generating novel views of a scene from known imagery--has garnered recent attention due in part to compelling applications in virtual and augmented reality. In this paper, we explore an intriguing scenario for view synthes is: extrapolating views from imagery captured by narrow-baseline stereo cameras, including VR cameras and now-widespread dual-lens camera phones. We call this problem stereo magnification, and propose a learning framework that leverages a new layered representation that we call multiplane images (MPIs). Our method also uses a massive new data source for learning view extrapolation: online videos on YouTube. Using data mined from such videos, we train a deep network that predicts an MPI from an input stereo image pair. This inferred MPI can then be used to synthesize a range of novel views of the scene, including views that extrapolate significantly beyond the input baseline. We show that our method compares favorably with several recent view synthesis methods, and demonstrate applications in magnifying narrow-baseline stereo images.
Video-to-video synthesis (vid2vid) aims for converting high-level semantic inputs to photorealistic videos. While existing vid2vid methods can achieve short-term temporal consistency, they fail to ensure the long-term one. This is because they lack k nowledge of the 3D world being rendered and generate each frame only based on the past few frames. To address the limitation, we introduce a novel vid2vid framework that efficiently and effectively utilizes all past generated frames during rendering. This is achieved by condensing the 3D world rendered so far into a physically-grounded estimate of the current frame, which we call the guidance image. We further propose a novel neural network architecture to take advantage of the information stored in the guidance images. Extensive experimental results on several challenging datasets verify the effectiveness of our approach in achieving world consistency - the output video is consistent within the entire rendered 3D world. https://nvlabs.github.io/wc-vid2vid/
Recent research on super-resolution has achieved great success due to the development of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs). However, super-resolution of arbitrary scale factor has been ignored for a long time. Most previous researchers regar d super-resolution of different scale factors as independent tasks. They train a specific model for each scale factor which is inefficient in computing, and prior work only take the super-resolution of several integer scale factors into consideration. In this work, we propose a novel method called Meta-SR to firstly solve super-resolution of arbitrary scale factor (including non-integer scale factors) with a single model. In our Meta-SR, the Meta-Upscale Module is proposed to replace the traditional upscale module. For arbitrary scale factor, the Meta-Upscale Module dynamically predicts the weights of the upscale filters by taking the scale factor as input and use these weights to generate the HR image of arbitrary size. For any low-resolution image, our Meta-SR can continuously zoom in it with arbitrary scale factor by only using a single model. We evaluated the proposed method through extensive experiments on widely used benchmark datasets on single image super-resolution. The experimental results show the superiority of our Meta-Upscale.
We propose to leverage a generic object tracker in order to perform object mining in large-scale unlabeled videos, captured in a realistic automotive setting. We present a dataset of more than 360000 automatically mined object tracks from 10+ hours o f video data (560000 frames) and propose a method for automated novel category discovery and detector learning. In addition, we show preliminary results on using the mined tracks for object detector adaptation.

We propose an efficient inference framework for semi-supervised video object segmentation by exploiting the temporal redundancy of the video. Our method performs inference on selected keyframes and makes predictions for other frames via propagation b ased on motion vectors and residuals from the compressed video bitstream. Specifically, we propose a new motion vector-based warping method for propagating segmentation masks from keyframes to other frames in a multi-reference manner. Additionally, we propose a residual-based refinement module that can correct and add detail to the block-wise propagated segmentation masks. Our approach is flexible and can be added on top of existing video object segmentation algorithms. With STM with top-k filtering as our base model, we achieved highly competitive results on DAVIS16 and YouTube-VOS with substantial speedups of up to 4.9X with little loss in accuracy.
