Both classical and quantum waves can form vortices: with helical phase fronts and azimuthal current densities. These features determine the intrinsic orbital angular momentum carried by localized vortex states. In the past 25 years, optical vortex beams have become an inherent part of modern optics, with many remarkable achievements and applications. In the past decade, it has been realized and demonstrated that such vortex beams or wavepackets can also appear in free electron waves, in particular, in electron microscopy. Interest in free-electron vortex states quickly spread over different areas of physics: from basic aspects of quantum mechanics, via applications for fine probing of matter (including individual atoms), to high-energy particle collision and radiation processes. Here we provide a comprehensive review of theoretical and experimental studies in this emerging field of research. We describe the main properties of electron vortex states, experimental achievements and possible applications within transmission electron microscopy, as well as the possible role of vortex electrons in relativistic and high-energy processes. We aim to provide a balanced description including a pedagogical introduction, solid theoretical basis, and a wide range of practical details. Special attention is paid to translate theoretical insights into suggestions for future experiments, in electron microscopy and beyond, in any situation where free electrons occur.

We implement a Quantum Autoencoder (QAE) as a quantum circuit capable of correcting Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states subject to various noisy quantum channels : the bit-flip channel and the more general quantum depolarizing channel. The QAE s hows particularly interesting results, as it enables to perform an almost perfect reconstruction of noisy states, but can also, more surprisingly, act as a generative model to create noise-free GHZ states. Finally, we detail a useful application of QAEs : Quantum Secret Sharing (QSS). We analyze how noise corrupts QSS, causing it to fail, and show how the QAE allows the QSS protocol to succeed even in the presence of noise.
This paper and the results therein are geared towards building a basic toolbox for calculations in quantum information theory of quasi-free fermionic systems. Various entropy and relative entropy measures are discussed and the calculation of these re duced to evaluating functions on the one-particle component of quasi-free states. The set of quasi-free affine maps on the state space is determined and fully characterized in terms of operations on one-particle subspaces. For a subclass of trace preserving completely positive maps and for their duals, Choi matrices and Jamiolkowski states are discussed.

We review the basic theory of the parton pseudodistributions approach and its applications to lattice extractions of parton distribution functions. The crucial idea of the approach is the realization that the correlator $M(z,p)$ of the parton fields is a function ${cal M} ( u, -z^2)$ of Lorentz invariants $ u =-(zp)$, the Ioffe time, and the invariant interval $z^2$. This observation allows to extract the Ioffe-time distribution ${cal M} ( u, -z^2)$ from Euclidean separations $z$ accessible on the lattice. Another basic feature is the use of the ratio ${mathfrak M} ( u,-z^2) equiv {cal M} ( u, -z^2)/{cal M} (0, -z^2)$, that allows to eliminate artificial ultraviolet divergence generated by the gauge link for space-like intervals. The remaining $z^2$-dependence of the reduced Ioffe-time distribution ${mathfrak M} ( u,-z^2) $ corresponds to perturbative evolution, and can be converted into the scale-dependence of parton distributions $f(x,mu^2)$ using matching relations. The $ u$-dependence of ${mathfrak M} ( u,-z^2) $ governs the $x$-dependence of parton densities $f(x,mu^2)$. The perturbative evolution was successfully observed in exploratory quenched lattice calculation. The analysis of its precise data provides a framework for extraction of parton densities using the pseudodistributions approach. It was used in the recently performed calculations of the nucleon and pion valence quark distributions. We also discuss matching conditions for the pion distribution amplitude and generalized parton distributions, the lattice studies of which are now in progress.
An interaction free evolving state of a closed bipartite system composed of two interacting subsystems is a generally mixed state evolving as if the interaction were a c-number. In this paper we find the characteristic equation of states possessing s imilar properties for a bipartite systems governed by a linear dynamical equation whose generator is sum of a free term and an interaction term. In particular in the case of a small system coupled to its environment, we deduce the characteristic equation of decoherence free states namely mixed states evolving as if the interaction term were effectively inactive. Several examples illustrate the applicability of our theory in different physical contexts.
During the last two decades or so much effort has been devoted to the discussion of quantum mechanics (QM) that in some way incorporates the notion of a minimum length. This upsurge of research has been prompted by the modified uncertainty relation b rought about in the framework of string theory. In general, the implementation of minimum length in QM can be done either by modification of position and momentum operators or by restriction of their domains. In the former case we have the so called soccer-ball problem when the naive classical limit appears to be drastically different from the usual one. Starting with the latter possibility, an alternative approach was suggested in the form of a band-limited QM. However, applying momentum cutoff to the wave-function, one faces the problem of incompatibility with the Schr{o}dinger equation. One can overcome this problem in a natural fashion by appropriately modifying Schr{o}dinger equation. But incompatibility takes place for boundary conditions as well. Such wave-function cannot have any more a finite support in the coordinate space as it simply follows from the Paley-Wiener theorem. Treating, for instance, the simplest quantum-mechanical problem of a particle in an infinite potential well, one can no longer impose box boundary conditions. In such cases, further modification of the theory is in order. We propose a non-local modification of QM, which has close ties to the band-limited QM, but does not require a hard momentum cutoff. In the framework of this model, one can easily work out the corrections to various processes and discuss further the semi-classical limit of the theory.
