Perturbation theory using self-consistent Greens functions is one of the most widely used approaches to study many-body effects in condensed matter. On the basis of general considerations and by performing analytical calculations for the specific example of the Hubbard atom, we discuss some key features of this approach. We show that when the domain of the functionals that are used to realize the map between the non-interacting and the interacting Greens functions is properly defined, there exists a class of self-energy functionals for which the self-consistent Dyson equation has only one solution, which is the physical one. We also show that manipulation of the perturbative expansion of the interacting Greens function may lead to a wrong self-energy as functional of the interacting Greens function, at least for some regions of the parameter space. These findings confirm and explain numerical results of Kozik et al. for the widely used skeleton series of Luttinger and Ward [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 156402]. Our study shows that it is important to distinguish between the maps between sets of functions and the functionals that realize those maps. We demonstrate that the self-consistent Greens functions approach itself is not problematic, whereas the functionals that are widely used may have a limited range of validity.

We propose a hybrid approach which employs the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) self-energy for the correlated, typically rather localized orbitals and a conventional density functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation potential for the less corre lated, less localized orbitals. We implement this self-energy (plus charge density) self-consistent DFT+DMFT scheme in a basis of maximally localized Wannier orbitals using Wien2K, wien2wannier, and the DMFT impurity solver w2dynamics. As a testbed material we apply the method to SrVO$_3$ and report a significant improvement as compared to previous $d$+$p$ calculations. In particular the position of the oxygen $p$ bands is reproduced correctly, which has been a persistent hassle with unwelcome consequences for the $d$-$p$ hybridization and correlation strength. Taking the (linearized) DMFT self-energy also in the Kohn-Sham equation renders the so-called double-counting problem obsolete.
We propose a general variational fermionic many-body wavefunction that generates an effective Hamiltonian in a quadratic form, which can then be exactly solved. The theory can be constructed within the density functional theory framework, and a self- consistent scheme is proposed for solving the exact density functional theory. We apply the theory to structurally-disordered systems, symmetric and asymmetric Hubbard dimers, and the corresponding lattice models. The single fermion excitation spectra show a persistent gap due to the fermionic-entanglement-induced pairing condensate. For disordered systems, the density of states at the edge of the gap diverges in the thermodynamic limit, suggesting a topologically ordered phase. A sharp resonance is predicted as the gap is not dependent on the temperature of the system. For the symmetric Hubbard model, the gap for both half-filling and doped case suggests that the quantum phase transition between the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases is continuous.
The self-consistent harmonic approximation is extended in order to account for the existence of Klein factors in bosonized Hamiltonians. This is important for the study of finite systems where Klein factors cannot be ignored a priori. As a test we ap ply the method to interacting spinless fermions with modulated hopping. We calculate the finite-size corrections to the energy gap and the Drude weight and compare our results with the exact solution for special values of the model parameters.
We present and implement a self-consistent D$Gamma$A approach for multi-orbital models and ab initio materials calculations. It is applied to the one-band Hubbard model at various interaction strengths with and without doping, to the two-band Hubbard model with two largely different bandwidths, and to SrVO$_3$. The self-energy feedback reduces critical temperatures compared to dynamical mean-field theory, even to zero temperature in two-dimensions. Compared to a one-shot, non-self-consistent calculation the non-local correlations are significantly reduced when they are strong. In case non-local correlations are weak to moderate as for SrVO$_3$, one-shot calculations are sufficient.
In this work, we use the thermodynamically consistent and conserving self-energy embedding theory (SEET) to study the spectra of the prototypical undistorted cubic perovskites SrVO$_3$ and SrMnO$_3$. In the strongly correlated metallic SrVO$_3$ we fi nd that the usual attribution of the satellite peaks at -1.8eV to Hund or Hubbard physics in the $t_{2g}$ orbitals is inconsistent with our calculations. In the strongly correlated insulator SrMnO$_3$ we recover insulating behavior due to a feedback effect between the strongly correlated orbitals and the weakly correlated environment. Our calculation shows a systematic convergence of spectral features as the space of strongly correlated orbitals is enlarged, paving the way to a systematic parameter free study of correlated perovskites.
