Various novel physical properties have emerged in Dirac electronic systems, especially the topological characters protected by symmetry. Current studies on these systems have been greatly promoted by the intuitive concepts of Berry phase and Berry curvature, which provide precise definitions of the topological orders. In this topical review, transport properties of topological insulator (Bi2Se3), topological Dirac semimetal (Cd3As2) and topological insulator-graphene heterojunction are presented and discussed. Perspectives about transport properties of two-dimensional topological nontrivial systems, including topological edge transport, topological valley transport and topological Weyl semimetals, are provided.

The notion of topological phases has been extended to higher-order and has been generalized to different dimensions. As a paradigm, Cd3As2 is predicted to be a higher-order topological semimetal, possessing three-dimensional (3D) bulk Dirac fermions, two-dimensional (2D) Fermi arcs, and one-dimensional (1D) hinge states. These topological states have different characteristic length scales in electronic transport, allowing to distinguish their properties when changing sample size. Here, we report an anomalous dimensional reduction of supercurrent transport by increasing the size of Dirac semimetal Cd3As2-based Josephson junctions. An evolution of the supercurrent quantum interferences from a standard Fraunhofer pattern to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)-like one is observed when the junction channel length is increased. The SQUID-like interference pattern indicates the supercurrent flowing through the 1D hinges. The identification of 1D hinge states should be valuable for deeper understanding the higher-order topological phase in a 3D Dirac semimetal.
Plasmon opens up the possibility to efficiently couple light and matter at sub-wavelength scales. In general, the plasmon frequency is dependent of carrier density. This dependency, however, renders fundamentally a weak plasmon intensity at low frequ ency, especially for Dirac plasmon (DP) widely studied in graphene. Here we demonstrate a new type of DP, excited by a Dirac nodal-surface state, which exhibits an anomalously density-independent frequency. Remarkably, we predict realization of anomalous DP (ADP) in 1D topological electrides, such as Ba3CrN3 and Sr3CrN3, by first-principles calculations. The ADPs in both systems have a density-independent frequency and high intensity, and their frequency can be tuned from terahertz to mid-infrared by changing the excitation direction. Furthermore, the intrinsic weak electron-phonon coupling of anionic electrons in electrides affords an added advantage of ultra-low phonon-assisted damping and hence a long lifetime of the ADPs. Our work paves the way to developing novel plasmonic and optoelectronic devices by combining topological physics with electride materials.
The unoccupied states in topological insulators Bi_2Se_3, PbSb_2Te_4, and Pb_2Bi_2Te_2S_3 are studied by the density functional theory methods. It is shown that a surface state with linear dispersion emerges in the inverted conduction band energy gap at the center of the surface Brillouin zone on the (0001) surface of these insulators. The alternative expression of Z_2 invariant allowed us to show that a necessary condition for the existence of the second Gamma Dirac cone is the presence of local gaps at the time reversal invariant momentum points of the bulk spectrum and change of parity in one of these points.

Three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) represent a novel state of quantum matter that can be viewed as 3D graphene. In contrast to two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions in graphene or on the surface of 3D topological insulators, TDS s possess 3D Dirac fermions in the bulk. The TDS is also an important boundary state mediating numerous novel quantum states, such as topological insulators, Weyl semi-metals, Axion insulators and topological superconductors. By investigating the electronic structure of Na3Bi with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered 3D Dirac fermions with linear dispersions along all momentum directions for the first time. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the 3D Dirac fermions in Na3Bi were protected by the bulk crystal symmetry. Our results establish that Na3Bi is the first model system of 3D TDSs, which can also serve as an ideal platform for the systematic study of quantum phase transitions between rich novel topological quantum states.

We present a short pedagogical introduction to the physics of Dirac materials, restricted to graphene and two- dimensional topological insulators. We start with a brief reminder of the Dirac and Weyl equations in the particle physics context. Turning to condensed matter systems, semimetallic graphene and various Dirac insulators are introduced, including the Haldane and the Kane-Mele topological insulators. We also discuss briefly experimental realizations in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.
