Interactions are responsible for intriguing physics, e.g. emergence of exotic ground states and excitations, in a wide range of systems. Here we theoretically demonstrate that dipole-dipole interaction leads to bosonic eigen-excitations with average spin ranging from zero to above $hbar$ in magnets with uniformly magnetized ground states. These exotic excitations can be interpreted as quantum coherent conglomerates of spin $hbar$ magnons, the eigen-excitations when the dipolar interactions are disregarded. We further find that the eigenmodes in an easy-axis antiferromagnet are spin-zero quasiparticles instead of the widely believed spin $pm hbar$ magnons. The latter re-emerge when the symmetry is broken by a sufficiently large applied magnetic field. The average spin greater than $hbar$ is accompanied by vacuum fluctuations and may be considered to be a weak form of frustration.

In this work, we study experimentally by broadband ferromagnetic resonance measurements, the dependence of the spin-wave excitation spectra on the magnetic applied field in CoFeB meander-shaped films. Two different orientations of the external magnet ic field were explored, namely parallel or perpendicular to the lattice cores. The interpretation of the field dependence of the frequency and spatial profiles of major spin-wave modes were obtained by micromagnetic simulations. We show that the vertical segments lead to the easy-axis type of magnetic anisotropy and support the in-phase and out-of-phase spin-wave precession amplitude in the vertical segments. The latter could potentially be used for the design of tunable metasurfaces or in magnetic memories based on meandering 3D magnetic films.
The interplay between spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom has led to the development of spintronic devices like spin-torque oscillators, spin-logic devices, and spin-transfer torque magnetic random-access memories. In this development spin p umping, the process where pure spin-currents are generated from magnetisation precession, has proved to be a powerful method for probing spin physics and magnetisation dynamics. The effect originates from direct conversion of low energy quantised spin-waves in the magnet, known as magnons, into a flow of spins from the precessing magnet to adjacent normal metal leads. The spin-pumping phenomenon represents a convenient way to electrically detect magnetisation dynamics, however, precessing magnets have been limited so far to pump pure spin currents, which require a secondary spin-charge conversion element such as heavy metals with large spin Hall angle or multi-layer layouts to be detectable. Here, we report the experimental observation of charge pumping in which a precessing ferromagnet pumps a charge current, demonstrating direct conversion of magnons into high-frequency currents via the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The generated electric current, differently from spin currents generated by spin-pumping, can be directly detected without the need of any additional spin to charge conversion mechanism and amplitude and phase information about the relativistic current-driven magnetisation dynamics. The charge-pumping phenomenon is generic and gives a deeper understanding of the recently observed spin-orbit torques, of which it is the reciprocal effect and which currently attract interest for their potential in manipulating magnetic information. Furthermore, charge pumping provides a novel link between magnetism and electricity and may find application in sourcing alternating electric currents.
Single-molecule magnets facilitate the study of quantum tunneling of magnetization at the mesoscopic level. The spin-parity effect is among the fundamental predictions that have yet to be clearly observed. It is predicted that quantum tunneling is su ppressed at zero transverse field if the total spin of the magnetic system is half-integer (Kramers degeneracy) but is allowed in integer spin systems. The Landau-Zener method is used to measure the tunnel splitting as a function of transverse field. Spin-parity dependent tunneling is established by comparing the transverse field dependence of the tunnel splitting of integer and half-integer spin systems.
In inversion-asymmetric semiconductors, spin-orbit coupling induces a k-dependent spin splitting of valence and conduction bands, which is a well-known cause for spin decoherence in bulk and heterostructures. Manipulating nonequilibrium spin coherenc e in device applications thus requires understanding how valence and conduction band spin splitting affects carrier spin dynamics. This paper studies the relevance of this decoherence mechanism for collective intersubband spin-density excitations (SDEs) in quantum wells. A density-functional formalism for the linear spin-density matrix response is presented that describes SDEs in the conduction band of quantum wells with subbands that may be non-parabolic and spin-split due to bulk or structural inversion asymmetry (Rashba effect). As an example, we consider a 40 nm GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well, including Rashba spin splitting of the conduction subbands. We find a coupling and wavevector-dependent splitting of the longitudinal and transverse SDEs. However, decoherence of the SDEs is not determined by subband spin splitting, due to collective effects arising from dynamical exchange and correlation.
Spin-wave modes are studied under the gradual transition from a flat thin film to a full (one-dimensional) magnonic crystal. For this purpose, the surface of a pre-patterned 36.8 nm thin permalloy film was sequentially ion milled resulting in magnoni c hybrid structures, referred to as surface-modulated magnonic crystals, with increasing modulation depth. After each etching step, ferromagnetic resonance measurements were performed yielding the spin-wave resonance modes in backward-volume and Damon-Eshbach geometry. The spin-wave spectra of these hybrid systems reveal an even larger variety of spin-wave states compared to the full magnonic crystal. The measurements are corroborated by quasi-analytical theory and micromagnetic simulations in order to study the changing spin-wave mode character employing spin-wave mode profiles. In backward-volume geometry, a gradual transition from the uniform mode in the film limit to a fundamental mode in the thin part of the magnonic crystal was observed. Equivalently, the first and the second film modes are transform into a center and an edge mode of the thick part of the magnonic crystal. Simple transition rules from the $n^{mathrm{th}}$ film mode to the $m^{mathrm{th}}$ mode in the full magnonic crystal are formulated unraveling the complex mode structure particularly in the backward-volume geometry. An analogous analysis was performed in the Damon-Eshbach geometry.
