This is an initial study of the longitudinal, single-bunch stability in the proposed FACET-II e+ damping ring. It is preliminary because many vacuum chamber objects of the ring have not yet been designed.

A future plasma based linear collider has the potential to reach unprecedented energies and transform our understanding of high energy physics. The extremely dense beams in such a device would cause the plasma ions to fall toward the axis. For more m ild ion motion, this introduces a nonlinear perturbation to the focusing fields inside of the bubble. However, for extreme ion motion, the ion distribution collapses to a quasi-equilibrium characterized by a thin filament of extreme density on the axis which generates strong, nonlinear focusing fields. These fields can provoke unacceptable emittance growth that can be reduced through careful beam matching. In this paper, we discuss the rich physics of ion motion, give a brief overview of plans for the E-314 experiment at FACET-II which will experimentally demonstrate ion motion in plasma accelerators, and present results of particle-in-cell simulations of ion motion relevant to the E-314 experiment.
Magnetic design proposed for a damping ring (DR) is based on second generation HTS cabling technology applied to the DC windings with a yoke and mu-metal-shimmed pole to achieve ~2T high-quality field within a 86 mm gap and 32-40 cm period. Low level s of current densities (~90-100A/mm2) provide a robust, reliable operation of the wiggler at higher heat loads, up to LN2 temperatures with long leads, enhanced flexibility for the cryostats and infrastructure in harsh radiation environment, and reduced failure rate compared to the baseline SC ILC DR wiggler design at very competitive cost.

A beam position monitor (BPM) upgrade at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) damping ring has been accomplished, carried out by a KEK/FNAL/SLAC collaboration under the umbrella of the global ILC R&D effort. The upgrade consists of a high resoluti on, high reproducibility read-out system, based on analog and processing, and also implements a new automatic gain error correction schema. The technical concept and realization as well as results of beam studies are presented.

TeV center of mass energy lepton-hadron collider is necessary both to clarify fundamental aspects of strong interactions and for adequate interpretation of the LHC data. Recently proposed QCD Explorer utilizes the energy advantage of the LHC proton a nd ion beams, which allows the usage of relatively low energy electron beam. Two options for the LHC based ep collider are posibble: construction of a new electron ring in the LHC tunnel or construction of an e-linac tangentially to the LHC. In the latter case, which seems more acceptable for a number of reasons, two options are under consideration for electron linac: the CLIC technology allows shorter linac length, whereas TESLA technology gives higher luminosity.

We present energy spread and bunch length measurements at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK, as functions of current, for different ring rf voltages, and with the beam both on and off the coupling resonance. We fit the on-coupling bunch shap es to those of an impedance model consisting of a resistor and an inductor connected in series. We find that the fits are reasonably good, but that the resulting impedance is unexpectedly large.
