In this paper, a Bose-Hubbard extension of a Weyl semimetal is proposed that can be realized for ultracold atoms using laser assisted tunneling and Feshbach resonance technique in three dimensional optical lattices. The global phase diagram is obtained consisting of a superfluid phase and various Mott insulator phases by using Landau theory. The Bogoliubov excitation modes for the weakly interacting case have nontrivial properties (Weyl nodes, bosonic surface arc, etc.) analogs of those in Weyl semimetals of electronic systems, which are smoothly carried over to that of Bloch bands for the noninteracting case. The properties of the insulating phases for the strongly interacting case are explored by calculating both the quasiparticle and quasihole dispersion relation, which shows two quasiparticle spectra touch at Weyl nodes.

Weyl fermions are massless chiral particles first predicted in 1929 and once thought to describe neutrinos. Although never observed as elementary particles, quasiparticles with Weyl dispersion have recently been experimentally discovered in solid-sta te systems causing a furore in the research community. Systems with Weyl excitations can display a plethora of fascinating phenomena and offer great potential for improved quantum technologies. Here we show that Weyl excitations generically exist in three-dimensional systems of dipolar particles with weakly broken time-reversal symmetry (for example, by a magnetic field). They emerge as a result of dipolar-interaction-induced transfer of angular momentum between the $J=0$ and $J=1$ internal particle levels. We also discuss momentum-resolved Ramsey spectroscopy methods for observing Weyl quasiparticles in cold alkaline-earth-atom systems. Our results provide a pathway for a feasible experimental realisation of Weyl quasiparticles and related phenomena in clean and controllable atomic systems.

Ultracold atoms in optical lattices provide a unique opportunity to study Bose- Hubbard physics. In this work we show that by considering a spatially varying onsite interaction it is possible to manipulate the motion of excitations above the Mott pha se in a Bose-Hubbard system. Specifically, we show that it is possible to engineer regimes where excitations will negatively refract, facilitating the construction of a flat lens.
We study topologically non-trivial excitations of a weakly interacting, spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a two-dimensional square optical lattice, a system recently realized in experiment [W. Sun et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 150401 (20 18)]. We focus on situations where the system is not subjected to a Zeeman field and thus does not exhibit nontrivial single-particle band topology. Of special interest then is the role of particle interaction as well as its interplay with the symmetry properties of the system in producing topologically non-trivial excitations. We find that the non-interacting system possesses a rich set of symmetries, including the $mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, the modified dihedral point group symmetry $tilde D_4$ and the nonsymmorphic symmetry. These combined symmetries ensure the existence of pairs of degenerate Dirac points at the edge of Brillouin zone for the single-particle energy bands. In the presence of particle interaction and with sufficient spin-orbit coupling, the atoms condense in a ground state with net magnetization which spontaneously breaks the $mathcal{PT}$ and $tilde D_4$ symmetry. We demonstrate that this symmetry breaking leads to a gap opening at the Dirac point for the Bogoliubov spectrum and consequentially topologically non-trivial excitations. We confirm the non-trivial topology by calculating the Chern numbers of the lowest excitation bands and show that gapless edge states form at the interface of systems characterized by different values of the Chern number.
The recent discoveries of ferroelectric metal and Weyl semimetal (WSM) have stimulated a natural question: whether these two exotic states of matter can coexist in a single material or not. These two discoveries ensure us that physically it is possib le since both of them share the same necessary condition, the broken inversion symmetry. Here, by using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the experimentally synthesized nonmagnetic HgPbO$_3$ represents a unique example of such hybrid emph{Weyl ferroelectric semimetal}. Its centrosymmetric $Rbar{3}c$ phase will undergo a ferroelectric phase transition to the ferroelectric $R3c$ structure. Both phases are metallic and the ferroelectric phase owns a spontaneous polarization of 33 $mu$C/cm$^2$. Most importantly, it also harbors six pairs of chiral Weyl nodes around the Fermi level to be an oxide WSM. The structural symmetry broken phase transition induces a topological phase transition. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and Weyl nodes in HgPbO$_3$ is an ideal platform for exploring multiphase interaction and mutual control. The Weyl nodes can be tuned by external pulse electric field, which is promising for potential applications of integrated topotronic and ferroelectric devices.
Heavy fermion semimetals represent a promising setting to explore topological metals driven by strong correlations. In this paper, we i) summarize the theoretical results in a Weyl-Kondo semimetal phase for a strongly correlated model with inversion- symmetry-breaking and time-reversal invariance, and the concurrent work that has experimentally discovered this phase in the non-magnetic non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion system Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pd$_3$; and ii) describe what is expected theoretically when the time-reversal symmetry is also broken.
