This comment clarifies the mixed definition of the cerium valence in the article entitled: Quantitative study of the $f$ occupation in CeMIn5 and other cerium compounds with hard X-rays, published in Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0368204816300123 and available on arXiv:1601.03270. Indeed, it is unclear wether electrons belonging on hybridized f-states are part or not of the valence. When one tries to simulate the system, an Anderson impurity model only includes valence bands electrons and localized 4-f states. Therefore hybridized 4-f states are mixed with the localized ones. From a heavy fermion perspective it however essential to differentiate hybridized and localized states as only the second are responsible for strong correlations, such as obtained by susceptibility or direct comparisons to model systems.

We present bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) data of the Ce3d core levels and lifetime-reduced L edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in the partial fluorescence yield (PFY) mode of the CeMIn5 family with M = Co, Rh, a nd Ir. The HAXPES data are analyzed quantitatively with a combination of full multiplet and configuration interaction model which allows correcting for the strong plasmons in the CeMIn5 HAXPES data, and reliable weights wn of the different fn contributions in the ground state are determined. The CeMIn5 results are compared to HAXPES data of other heavy fermion compounds and a systematic decrease of the hybridization strength Veff from CePd3 to CeRh3B2 to CeRu2Si2 is observed, while it is smallest for the three CeMIn5 compounds. The f-occupation, however, increases in the same sequence and is close to one for the CeMIn5 family. The PFY-XAS data confirm an identical f-occupation in the three CeMIn5 compounds and a phenomenological fit to these PFY-XAS data combined with a configuration interaction model yields consistent results.

Rare 4f^2-based heavy-fermion behaviors have been revealed recently in Pr-based filled skutterudites PrFe4P12 and PrOs4Sb12. Recent studies on the thermal properties on both compounds are reported, putting emphasis on the field-induced ordered phase found in PrOs4Sb12.
The competition between spin glass, ferromagnetism and Kondo effect is analysed here in a Kondo lattice model with an inter-site random coupling $J_{ij}$ between the localized magnetic moments given by a generalization of the Mattis model which repre sents an interpolation between ferromagnetism and a highly disordered spin glass. Functional integral techniques with Grassmann fields have been used to obtain the partition function. The static approximation and the replica symmetric ansatz have also been used. The solution of the problem is presented as a phase diagram giving $T/{J}$ {it versus} $J_K/J$ where $T$ is the temperature, $J_{K}$ and ${J}$ are the strengths of the intrasite Kondo and the intersite random couplings, respectively. If $J_K/{J}$ is small, when temperature is decreased, there is a second order transition from a paramagnetic to a spin glass phase. For lower $T/{J}$, a first order transition appears between the spin glass phase and a region where there are Mattis states which are thermodynamically equivalent to the ferromagnetism. For very low ${T/{J}}$, the Mattis states become stable. On the other hand, it is found as solution a Kondo state for large $J_{K}/{J}$ values. These results can improve the theoretical description of the well known experimental phase diagram of $CeNi_{1-x}Cu_{x}$.
In a recent paper by Schmitt et al. (arXiv:1402.1091), signs of two exchange interactions of one-dimensional alternating chains in distorted honeycomb systems of Na3Cu2SbO6 and Na2Cu2TeO6 are argued by theoretical calculations. Although the authors r eport that they have clarified that the interaction J1a is ferromagnetic between the spins within a structural dimer, and J1b is antiferromagnetic between these dimers, these results have been known for a long time by our two papers, which are cited by Schmitt et al.
Electronic structures of the quantum critical superconductor beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 are investigated by using bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. From the Yb 3d core level spectra, the values of the Yb valence ar e estimated to be ~2.73 and ~2.75 for alpha- and beta-YbAlB4, respectively, thus providing clear evidence for valence fluctuations. The valence band spectra of these compounds also show Yb2+ peaks at the Fermi level. These observations establish an unambiguous case of a strong mixed valence at quantum criticality for the first time among heavy fermion systems, calling for a novel scheme for a quantum critical model beyond the conventional Doniach picture in beta-YbAlB4.
