We study the evolution of the Kondo effect in heavy fermion compounds, Yb(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ (0$leqslant$ x $leqslant$ 1), by means of temperature-dependent electric resistivity and specific heat. The ground state of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ can be well described by a Kondo model with degeneracy $N$ = 8 and a $T_Ksim$30 K. In the presence of a very similar total CEF splitting with YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$, the ground state of YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is close to a Kondo state with degeneracy $N$ = 2 and a much lower $T_Ksim$ 2 K. Upon Co substitution, the coherence temperature of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is suppressed, accompanied by an emerging Schottky-like feature in specific heat associated with the thermal depopulation of CEF levels upon cooling. For 0.4$lesssim$ x $lesssim$ 0.9, the ground state remains roughly the same which can be qualitatively understood by Kondo effect in the presence of CEF splitting. There is no clear indication of Kondo coherence observable in resistivity within this substitution range down to 500 mK. The coherence re-appears at around x$gtrsim$ 0.9 and the coherence temperature increases with higher Co concentration levels.

A detailed microscopic and quantitative description of the electronic and magnetic properties of Gd$^{3+}$-doped YCo$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ single crystals (Y$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$Co$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$: (0.002 $lesssim x leq $ 1.00) is reported through a combination o f temperature-dependent electron spin resonance (ESR), heat capacity and $dc$ magnetic susceptibility experiments, plus first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The ESR results indicate that this system features an emph{exchange bottleneck} scenario wherein various channels for the spin-lattice relaxation mechanism of the Gd$^{3+}$ ions can be identified via exchange interactions with different types of conduction electrons at the Fermi level. Quantitative support from the other techniques allow to extract the exchange interaction parameters between the localized magnetic moments of the Gd$^{3+}$ ions and the different types of conduction electrons present at the Fermi level ($J_{fs}$, $J_{fp}$ and $J_{fd}$). Despite the complexity of the crystal structure, our combination of experimental and electronic structure data establish GdCo$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ as a model RKKY system by predicting a Curie-Weiss temperature $theta_{C} = -1.2(2)$~K directly from microscopic parameters, in very good agreement with the bulk value from magnetization data. The successful microscopic understanding of the electronic structure and behavior for the two end compounds YCo$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ and GdCo$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ means they can be used as references to help describe the more complex electronic properties of related materials.
Acoustic signatures of the single-site quadrupolar Kondo effect in Y$_{0.966}$Pr$_{0.034}$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$ are presented. The elastic constant ($C_{11}-C_{12}$)/2, corresponding to the $Gamma_3$(E)-symmetry electric-quadrupolar response, reveals a log arithmic temperature dependence of the quadrupolar susceptibility in the low-magnetic-field region below $sim$0.3 K. Furthermore, the Curie-type divergence of the elastic constant down to $sim$1 K indicates that the Pr ions in this diluted system have a non-Kramers ground-state doublet. These observations evidence the single-site quadrupolar Kondo effect, as previously suggested based on specific-heat and electrical resistivity data.
Zero-field muSR experiments in the heavy-fermion alloys Ce_{1-x}La_xAl_3, x = 0 and 0.2, examine a recent proposal that the system exhibits a strong anisotropic Kondo effect. We resolve a damped oscillatory component for both La concentrations, indic ative of disordered antiferromagnetism. For x = 0.2 the oscillation frequency decreases smoothly with increasing temperature, and vanishes at the specific heat anomaly temperature T* approx 2.2 K. Our results are consistent with the view that T* is due to a magnetic transition rather than anisotropic Kondo behavior.
We present thermopower measurements on Yb(Rh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$. Upon Co substitution the Kondo temperature is decreasing and the single large thermopower minimum observed for YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ splits into two minima. Simultaneously, the absolute thermopower values are strongly reduced due to a weaker exchange coupling between the $4f$ and the conduction electron states with increasing $x$. Pure YbCo$_2$Si$_2$ is considered a stable, trivalent system. Nevertheless, we still observe two minima in the thermopower indicative of weak residual Kondo scattering. This is in line with results from photo emission spectroscopy revealing a tiny contribution from Yb$^{2+}$. The value at the high-$T$ minimum in $S(T)$ is found to be proportional to the Sommerfeld coefficient for the whole series. This unexpected finding is discussed in relation to recent measurements of the valence and Fermi surface evolution with temperature.

The magnetic ground state of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments in a series of Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals grown from the Sn flux has been investigated in detail by neutron diffraction measurements. Combined with the results from the macr oscopic properties (resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat) measurements, a phase diagram describing how the Eu magnetic order evolves with Co doping in Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is established. The ground-state magnetic structure of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins is found to develop from the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in the parent compound, via the A-type canted AFM structure with some net ferromagnetic (FM) moment component along the crystallographic $mathit{c}$ direction at intermediate Co doping levels, finally to the pure FM order at relatively high Co doping levels. The ordering temperature of Eu declines linearly at first, reaches the minimum value of 16.5(2) K around $mathit{x}$ = 0.100(4), and then reverses upwards with further Co doping. The doping-induced modification of the indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the Eu$^{2+}$ moments, which is mediated by the conduction $mathit{d}$ electrons on the (Fe,Co)As layers, as well as the change of the strength of the direct interaction between the Eu$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ moments, might be responsible for the change of the magnetic ground state and the ordering temperature of the Eu sublattice. In addition, for Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals with 0.10 $leqslant$ $mathit{x}$ $leqslant$ 0.18, strong ferromagnetism from the Eu sublattice is well developed in the superconducting state, where a spontaneous vortex state is expected to account for the compromise between the two competing phenomena.
