We demonstrate that light is subject to anomalous (i.e., negative) diffraction when propagating in the presence of hyperbolic dispersion. We show that light propagation in hyperbolic media resembles the dynamics of a quantum particle of negative mass moving in a two-dimensional potential. The negative effective mass implies time reversal if the medium is homogeneous. Such property paves the way to diffraction compensation, spatial analogue of dispersion compensating fibers in the temporal domain. At variance with materials exhibiting standard elliptic dispersion, in inhomogeneous hyperbolic materials light waves are pulled towards regions with a lower refractive index. In the presence of a Kerr-like optical response, bright (dark) solitons are supported by a negative (positive) nonlinearity.

Hyperbolic metamaterials are materials in which at least one principal dielectric constant is negative. We describe the refractive index surface, and the resulting refraction effects, for a biaxial hyperbolic metamaterial, with principal dielectric c onstants $epsilon_1<0$, $0<epsilon_2 eqepsilon_3$. In this general case the two sheets of the index surface intersect forming conical singularities. We derive the ray description of conical refraction in these materials, and show that it is topologically and quantitatively distinct from conical refraction in a conventional biaxial material. We also develop a wave optics description, which allows us to obtain the diffraction patterns formed from arbitrary beams incident close to the optic axis. The resulting patterns lack circular symmetry, and hence are qualitatively different from those obtained in conventional, positive index materials.
Metasurfaces offer the potential to control light propagation at the nanoscale for applications in both free-space and surface-confined geometries. Existing metasurfaces frequently utilize metallic polaritonic elements with high absorption losses, an d/or fixed geometrical designs that serve a single function. Here we overcome these limitations by demonstrating a reconfigurable hyperbolic metasurface comprising of a heterostructure of isotopically enriched hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in direct contact with the phase-change material (PCM) vanadium dioxide (VO2). Spatially localized metallic and dielectric domains in VO2 change the wavelength of the hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) supported in hBN by a factor 1.6 at 1450cm-1. This induces in-plane launching, refraction and reflection of HPhPs in the hBN, proving reconfigurable control of in-plane HPhP propagation at the nanoscale15. These results exemplify a generalizable framework based on combining hyperbolic media and PCMs in order to design optical functionalities such as resonant cavities, beam steering, waveguiding and focusing with nanometric control.
Metasurfaces with strongly anisotropic optical properties can support deep subwavelength-scale confined electromagnetic waves (polaritons) that promise opportunities for controlling light in photonic and optoelectronic applications. We develop a mid- infrared hyperbolic metasurface by nanostructuring a thin layer of hexagonal boron nitride supporting deep subwavelength-scale phonon polaritons that propagate with in-plane hyperbolic dispersion. By applying an infrared nanoimaging technique, we visualize the concave (anomalous) wavefronts of a diverging polariton beam, which represent a landmark feature of hyperbolic polaritons. The results illustrate how near-field microscopy can be applied to reveal the exotic wavefronts of polaritons in anisotropic materials, and demonstrate that nanostructured van der Waals materials can form a highly variable and compact platform for hyperbolic infrared metasurface devices and circuits.
We demonstrate the possibility of generation of coherent radiation with tunable frequencies higher than the frequency of the driving field $ u _{d}$ in a nonlinear medium utilizing the difference combination resonance that occurs when $ u _{d}$ match es the difference of the frequencies of the two generated fields $omega _{1}$ and $omega _{2}$. We find that such a resonance can appear in materials which have opposite signs of refractive index at $omega _{1}$ and $omega _{2}$. It can also occur in positive refractive index materials with strong anomalous dispersion if at one of the generated frequencies the group and phase velocities are opposite to each other. We show that the light amplification mechanism is equivalent to a combination resonance in a system of two coupled parametric oscillators with the opposite sign of masses. Such a mechanism holds promise for a new kind of light source that emits coherent radiation of tunable wavelengths by an optical parametric amplification process with the frequency higher than $ u_{d}$.
We describe novel topological phases of iso-frequency k-space surfaces in bi-anisotropic optical materials - tri- and tetra-hyperbolic materials, which are induced by introduction of chirality. This completes the classification of iso-frequency topol ogies for bi-anisotropic materials, since as we show all optical materials belong to one of the following topological classes: tetra-, tri-, bi-, mono- or non-hyperbolic. We show that phase transitions between these classes occur in the k-space directions with zero group velocity at high k-vectors. This classification is based on the sets of high-k polaritons (HKPs), supported by materials. We obtain the equation describing these sets and characterize the longitudinal polarization impedance of HKPs.
