Nonlinear Stabilization of High-Energy and Ultrashort Pulses in Passively Modelocked Lasers with Fast Saturable Absorption

The two most commonly used models for passively modelocked lasers with fast saturable absorbers are the Haus modelocking equation (HME) and the cubic-quintic modelocking equation (CQME). The HME corresponds to a special limit of the CQME in which only a cubic nonlinearity in the fast saturable absorber is kept in the model. Here, we use singular perturbation theory to demonstrate that the CQME has a stable high-energy solution for an arbitrarily small but non-zero quintic contribution to the fast saturable absorber. As a consequence, we find that the CQME predicts the existence of stable modelocked pulses when the cubic nonlinearity is orders of magnitude larger than the value at which the HME predicts that modelocked pulses become unstable. This intrinsically larger stability range is consistent with experiments. Our results suggest a possible path to obtain high-energy and ultrashort pulses by fine tuning the higher-order nonlinear terms in the fast saturable absorber.

Fast saturable absorbers (FSAs) play a critical role in stabilizing many passively modelocked lasers. The most commonly used averaged model to study these lasers is the Haus modelocking equation (HME) that includes a third-order nonlinear FSA. Howeve r, it predicts a narrow region of stability that is inconsistent with experiments. To better replicate the laser physics, averaged laser models that include FSAs with higher-than-third-order nonlinearities have been introduced. Here, we compare three common FSA models to each other and to the HME using the recently-developed boundary tracking algorithms. The three FSA models are the cubic-quintic model, the sinusoidal model, and the algebraic model. We find that all three models predict the existence of a stable high-energy solution that is not present in the HME and have a much larger stable operating region. We also find that all three models predict qualitatively similar stability diagrams. We conclude that averaged laser models that include FSAs with higher-than-third-order nonlinearity should be used when studying the stability of passively modelocked lasers.

We demonstrate a fiber system which amplifies and compresses pulses from a gain-switched diode. A Mamyshev regenerator shortens the pulses and improves their coherence, enabling subsequent amplification by parabolic pre-shaping. As a result, we are a ble to control nonlinear effects and generate nearly transform-limited, 140-fs pulses with 13-MW peak power---an order-of-magnitude improvement over previous gain-switched diode sources. Seeding with a gain-switched diode results in random fluctuations of 2% in the pulse energy, which future work using known techniques may ameliorate. Further development may allow such systems to compete directly with sources based on modelocked oscillators in some applications while enjoying unparalleled robustness and repetition rate control.

Nonstationary pulse regimes associated with self modulation of a Kerr-lens modelocked Ti:sapphire laser have been studied experimentally and theoretically. Such laser regimes occur at an intracavity group delay dispersion that is smaller or larger th an what is required for stable modelocking and exhibit modulation in pulse amplitude and spectra at frequencies of several hundred kHz. Stabilization of such modulations, leading to an increase in the pulse peak power by a factor of ten, were accomplished by weakly modulating the pump laser with the self-modulation frequency. The main experimental observations can be explained with a round trip model of the fs laser taking into account gain saturation, Kerr lensing, and second- and third-order dispersion.

We report results of numerical simulations on the multiple soliton generation and soliton energy quantization in a soliton fiber ring laser passively mode-locked by using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. We found numerically that the fo rmation of multiple solitons in the laser is caused by a peak power limiting effect of the laser cavity. It is also the same effect that suppresses the soliton pulse collapse, an intrinsic feature of solitons propagating in the gain media, and makes the solitons stable in the laser. Furthermore, we show that the soliton energy quantization observed in the lasers is a natural consequence of the gain competition between the multiple solitons. Enlightened by the numerical result we speculate that the multi-soliton formation and soliton energy quantization observed in other types of soliton fiber lasers could have similar mechanism.
