We present improved pQCD predictions for Higgs boson hadroproduction at the Large Hadronic Collider (LHC) by applying the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC), a procedure which resums the pQCD series using the renormalization group (RG), thereby eliminating the dependence of the predictions on the choice of the renormalization scheme while minimizing sensitivity to the initial choice of the renormalization scale. In previous pQCD predictions for Higgs boson hadroproduction, it has been conventional to assume that the renormalization scale $mu_r$ of the QCD coupling $alpha_s(mu_r)$ is the Higgs mass, and then to vary this choice over the range $1/2 m_H < mu_r < 2 m_H $ in order to estimate the theory uncertainty. However, this error estimate is only sensitive to the non-conformal $beta$ terms in the pQCD series, and thus it fails to correctly estimate the theory uncertainty in cases where pQCD series has large higher order contributions, as is the case for Higgs boson hadroproduction. Furthermore, this mbox{it ad hoc} choice of scale and range gives pQCD predictions which depend on the renormalization scheme being used, in contradiction to basic RG principles. In contrast, after applying the PMC, we obtain next-to-next-to-leading order RG resummed pQCD predictions for Higgs boson hadroproduction which are renormalization-scheme independent and have minimal sensitivity to the choice of the initial renormalization scale. Taking $m_H=125$ GeV, the PMC predictions for the $p p to H X$ Higgs inclusive hadroproduction cross-sections for various LHC center-of-mass energies and the fiducial cross section $sigma_{rm fid}(ppto Htogammagamma)$ are presented...... The PMC predictions show better agreement with the ATLAS measurements than the LHC-XS predictions which are based on conventional renormalization scale-setting.

We study the Higgs boson $(h)$ decay to two light jets at the 14 TeV High-Luminosity-LHC (HL-LHC), where a light jet ($j$) represents any non-flavor tagged jet from the observational point of view. The decay mode $hto gg$ is chosen as the benchmark s ince it is the dominant channel in the Standard Model (SM), but the bound obtained is also applicable to the light quarks $(j=u,d,s)$. We estimate the achievable bounds on the decay branching fractions through the associated production $Vh (V=W^pm,Z)$. Events of the Higgs boson decaying into heavy (tagged) or light (un-tagged) jets are correlatively analyzed. We find that with 3000 fb$^{-1}$ data at the HL-LHC, we should expect approximately $1sigma$ statistical significance on the SM $Vh(gg)$ signal in this channel. This corresponds to a reachable upper bound ${rm BR}(hto jj) leq 4~ {rm BR}^{SM}(hto gg)$ at $95%$ confidence level. A consistency fit also leads to an upper bound ${rm BR}(hto cc) < 15~ {rm BR}^{SM}(hto cc)$ at $95%$ confidence level. The estimated bound may be further strengthened by adopting multiple variable analyses, or adding other production channels.
We present a comprehensive and self-consistent analysis for the thrust distribution by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC). By absorbing all nonconformal terms into the running coupling using PMC via renormalization group equation, the scale in the running coupling shows the correct physical behavior and the correct number of active flavors is determined. The resulting PMC predictions agree with the precise measurements for both the thrust differential distributions and the thrust mean values. Moreover, we provide a new remarkable way to determine the running of the coupling constant $alpha_s(Q^2)$ from the measurement of the jet distributions in electron-positron annihilation at a single given value of the center-of-mass energy $sqrt{s}$.
A key problem in making precise perturbative QCD predictions is the uncertainty in determining the renormalization scale $mu$ of the running coupling $alpha_s(mu^2).$ The purpose of the running coupling in any gauge theory is to sum all terms involvi ng the $beta$ function; in fact, when the renormalization scale is set properly, all non-conformal $beta e 0$ terms in a perturbative expansion arising from renormalization are summed into the running coupling. The remaining terms in the perturbative series are then identical to that of a conformal theory; i.e., the corresponding theory with $beta=0$. The resulting scale-fixed predictions using the principle of maximum conformality (PMC) are independent of the choice of renormalization scheme -- a key requirement of renormalization group invariance. The results avoid renormalon resummation and agree with QED scale-setting in the Abelian limit. The PMC is also the theoretical principle underlying the BLM procedure, commensurate scale relations between observables, and the scale-setting method used in lattice gauge theory. The number of active flavors $n_f$ in the QCD $beta$ function is also correctly determined. We discuss several methods for determining the PMC scale for QCD processes. We show that a single global PMC scale, valid at leading order, can be derived from basic properties of the perturbative QCD cross section. The elimination of the renormalization scale ambiguity and the scheme dependence using the PMC will not only increase the precision of QCD tests, but it will also increase the sensitivity of collider experiments to new physics beyond the Standard Model.
The LHC is making strides in the exploration of the properties of the newly discoverd Higgs boson, $h$. In Refs.~cite{vonBuddenbrock:2015ema,Kumar:2016vut,vonBuddenbrock:2016rmr} the compatibility of the proton-proton data reported in the Run I perio d with the presence of a heavy scalar, $H$, with a mass around 270,GeV and its implications were explored. This boson would decay predominantly to $Hrightarrow Sh$, where $S$, is a lighter scalar boson. The production cross-section of $pprightarrow H(rightarrow Sh) + X$ is considerable and it would significantly affect the inclusive rate of $h$. The contamination from this new production mechanism would depend strongly on the final state used to measure the rate of $h$. The contamination in the rate measurement of $Vh(rightarrow boverline{b}), V=Z,W$ is estimated to be small. This statement does not depend strongly on assumptions made on the decay of $S$.
If the fundamental Planck scale is near a TeV, then TeV scale black holes should be produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC where sqrt{s} = 14 TeV. As the temperature of the black holes can be ~ 1 TeV we also expect production of Higgs bosons from them via Hawking radiation. This is a different production mode for the Higgs boson, which would normally be produced via direct pQCD parton fusion processes. In this paper we compare total cross sections and transverse momentum distributions dsigma/dp_T for Higgs production from black holes at the LHC with those from direct parton fusion processes at next-to-next-to-leading order and next-to-leading order respectively. We find that the Higgs production from black holes can be larger or smaller than the direct pQCD production depending upon the Planck mass and black hole mass. We also find that dsigma/dp_T of Higgs production from black holes increases as a function of p_T which is in sharp contrast with the pQCD predictions where dsigma/dp_T decreases so we suggest that the measurement of an increase in dsigma/dp_T as p_T increases for Higgs (or any other heavy particle) production can be a useful signature for black holes at the LHC.
