In this thesis we investigate quantum aspects of the Green-Schwarz superstring in various AdS backgrounds relevant for the AdS/CFT correspondence, providing several examples of perturbative computations in the corresponding integrable sigma-models. We start by reviewing in details the supercoset construction of the superstring action in $AdS_5 times S^5$, pointing out the limits of this procedure for $AdS_4$ and $AdS_3$ backgrounds. For the $AdS_4 times CP^3$ case we give a thorough derivation of an alternative action, based on the double-dimensional reduction of eleven-dimensional super-membranes. We then consider the expansion about the BMN vacuum and the S-matrix for the scattering of worldsheet excitations in the decompactification limit. To evaluate its elements efficiently we describe a unitarity-based method resulting in a very compact formula yielding the cut-constructible part of any one-loop two-dimensional S-matrix. In the second part of this review we analyze the superstring action on $AdS_4 times CP^3$ expanded around the null cusp vacuum. The free energy of this model, whose computation we reproduce up to two-loops at strong coupling, is related to the cusp anomalous dimension of the ABJM theory and, indirectly, to a non-trivial effective coupling $h(lambda)$ featuring all integrability-based calculations in $AdS_4/CFT_3$. Finally, we extensively discuss the comparison of the perturbative results and the integrability predictions for the one-loop dispersion relation of GKP excitations. Our results provide valuable data in support of the quantum consistency of the string actions - often debated due to possible issues with cancellation of UV divergences and the lack of manifest power-counting renormalizability - and furnish non-trivial stringent tests for the quantum integrability of the analyzed models.

We present a systematic procedure to extract the dynamics of the low energy soft mode in SYK type models with a single energy scale $J$ and emergent reparametrization symmetry in the IR. This is given in the framework of the perturbation theory schem e of arXiv:1608.07567 based on specific (off-shell) breaking of conformal invariance in the UV, adjusted to yield the exact large-$N$ saddle point. While this breaking formally vanishes on-shell, it has a non-trivial effect on correlation functions and the effective action. In particular, it leads to the Schwarzian action with a specific coupling to bi-local matter. The method is applied to the evaluation of $O(1)$ corrections to the correlation function of bi-locals. As a byproduct we confirm precise agreement with the explicit, symmetry breaking procedure. We provide a verification in the large $q$ limit (Liouville theory), where the correlators can be calculated exactly at all length scales. In this case, our scheme illuminates how the enhanced $O(J)$ and the subleading $O(1)$ contributions originate from the Schwarzian dynamics of the soft mode and its interaction with $h=2$ (bi-local) matter.
The dimensionless parameter $xi = M^2/(16 pi^2 F^2)$, where $F$ is the pion decay constant in the chiral limit and $M$ is the pion mass at leading order in the quark mass, is expected to control the convergence of chiral perturbation theory applicabl e to QCD. Here we demonstrate that a strongly coupled lattice gauge theory model with the same symmetries as two-flavor QCD but with a much lighter $sigma$-resonance is different. Our model allows us to study efficiently the convergence of chiral perturbation theory as a function of $xi$. We first confirm that the leading low energy constants appearing in the chiral Lagrangian are the same when calculated from the $epsilon$-regime and the $p$-regime. However, $xi lesssim 0.002$ is necessary before 1-loop chiral perturbation theory predicts the data within 1%. However, for $xi > 0.0035$ the data begin to deviate qualitatively from 1-loop chiral perturbation theory predictions. We argue that this qualitative change is due to the presence of a light $sigma$-resonance in our model. Our findings may be useful for lattice QCD studies.
We describe a new perturbation theory for General Relativity, with the chiral first-order Einstein-Cartan action as the starting point. Our main result is a new gauge-fixing procedure that eliminates the connection-to-connection propagator. All other known first-order formalisms have this propagator non-zero, which significantly increases the combinatorial complexity of any perturbative calculation. In contrast, in the absence of the connection-to-connection propagator, our formalism leads to an effective description in which only the metric (or tetrad) propagates, there are only cubic and quartic vertices, but some vertex legs are special in that they cannot be connected by the propagator. The new formalism is the gravity analog of the well-known and powerful chiral description of Yang-Mills theory.
Generative models in deep learning allow for sampling probability distributions that approximate data distributions. We propose using generative models for making approximate statistical predictions in the string theory landscape. For vacua admitting a Lagrangian description this can be thought of as learning random tensor approximations of couplings. As a concrete proof-of-principle, we demonstrate in a large ensemble of Calabi-Yau manifolds that Kahler metrics evaluated at points in Kahler moduli space are well-approximated by ensembles of matrices produced by a deep convolutional Wasserstein GAN. Accurate approximations of the Kahler metric eigenspectra are achieved with far fewer than $h^{11}$ Gaussian draws. Accurate extrapolation to values of $h^{11}$ outside the training set are achieved via a conditional GAN. Together, these results implicitly suggest the existence of strong correlations in the data, as might be expected if Reids fantasy is correct.
Using Z3 asymmetric orbifolds in heterotic string theory, we construct N=1 SUSY three-generation models with the standard model gauge group SU(3)_C times SU(2)_L times U(1)_Y and the left-right symmetric group SU(3)_C times SU(2)_L times SU(2)_R time s U(1)_{B-L}. One of the models possesses a gauge flavor symmetry for the Z3 twisted matter.
