The $6S_{1/2}-5D_{5/2}$ electric quadrupole transition is investigated in Cesium vapor at room temperature via nonlinear Doppler-free 6P-6S-5D three-level spectroscopy. Frequency-resolved studies of individual E2 hyperfine lines allow one to analyze optical pumping dynamics, polarization selection rules and line intensities. It opens the way to studies of transfer of light orbital angular momentum to atoms, and the influence of metamaterials on E2 line spectra.

Cs$_2$ Rydberg-ground molecules consisting of a Rydberg, $nD_{J}$ (33 $leq$ $n$ $leq$ 39), and a ground state atom, 6$S_{1/2} (F=$3 or 4$)$, are investigated by photo-association spectroscopy in a cold atomic gas. We observe vibrational spectra that correspond to triplet $^TSigma$ and mixed $^{S,T}Sigma$ molecular states. We establish scaling laws for the energies of the lowest vibrational states vs principal quantum number and obtain zero-energy singlet and triplet $s$-wave scattering lengths from experimental data and a Fermi model. Line broadening in electric fields reveals the permanent molecular electric-dipole moments; measured values agree well with calculations. We discuss the negative polarity of the dipole moments, which differs from previously reported cases.
We report a measurement of the ratio of electric dipole transition matrix elements of cesium for the $6p,^2P_{1/2} rightarrow 7s,^2S_{1/2}$ and $6p,^2P_{3/2} rightarrow 7s,^2S_{1/2}$ transitions. We determine this ratio of matrix elements through com parisons of two-color, two-photon excitation rates of the $7s,^2S_{1/2}$ state using laser beams with polarizations parallel to one another vs. perpendicular to one another. Our result of $R equiv langle 7s ^2S_{1/2} || r || 6p ^2P_{3/2} rangle / langle 7s ^2S_{1/2} || r || 6p ^2P_{1/2} rangle = 1.5272 (17)$ is in excellent agreement with a theoretical prediction of $R=1.5270 (27)$. Moreover, the accuracy of the experimental ratio is sufficiently high to differentiate between various theoretical approaches. To our knowledge, there are no prior experimental measurements of $R$. Combined with our recent determination of the lifetime of the $7s,^2S_{1/2}$ state, we determine reduced matrix elements for these two transitions, $langle 7s ^2S_{1/2} || r || 6p ^2P_{3/2} rangle = -6.489 (5) a_0$ and $langle 7s ^2S_{1/2} || r || 6p ^2P_{1/2} rangle = -4.249 (4) a_0$. These matrix elements are also in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations. These measurements improve knowledge of Cs properties needed for parity violation studies and provide benchmarks for tests of high-precision theory.
We measure the lifetime of the cesium $5^2D_{5/2}$ state using a time-resolved single-photon-counting method. We excite atoms in a hot vapor cell via an electric quadrupole transition at a wavelength of $685,mathrm{nm}$ and record the fluorescence of a cascade decay at a wavelength of $852,mathrm{nm}$. We extract a lifetime of $1353(5),mathrm{ns}$ for the $5^2D_{5/2}$ state, in agreement with a recent theoretical prediction. In particular, the observed lifetime is consistent with the literature values of the polarizabilities of the cesium $6P$ states. Our measurement contributes to resolving a long-standing disagreement between a number of experimental and theoretical results.

We present precise values of the dipole polarizabilities ($alpha$) of the ground $rm [4f^{14}6s] ~ ^2S_{1/2}$ and metastable $rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ states of Yb$^+$, that are %vital {bf important} in reducing systematics in the clock frequency of the $rm[4f^{14}6s] ~ ^2S_{1/2} rightarrow [4f^{14}5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ transition. The static values of $alpha$ for the ground and $rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ states are estimated to be $9.8(1) times 10^{-40} ,,rm Jm^2V^{-2}$ and $17.6(5) times 10^{-40},, rm Jm^2V^{-2}$, respectively, while the tensor contribution to the $rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ state as $- 12.3(3) times 10^{-40},, rm Jm^2V^{-2}$ compared to the experimental value $-13.6(2.2) times 10^{-40},,rm Jm^2V^{-2}$. This corresponds to the differential scalar polarizability value of the above transition as $-7.8$(5)$,times, 10^{-40},rm Jm^2 V^{-2}$ in contrast to the available experimental value $-6.9$(1.4)$,times, 10^{-40}$,, $rm Jm^2V^{-2}$. This results in the black-body radiation (BBR) shift of the clock transition as $-0.44(3)$ Hz at the room temperature, which is large as compared to the previously estimated values. Using the dynamic $alpha$ values, we report the tune-out and magic wavelengths that could be of interest to subdue %major systematics due to the Stark shifts and for constructing lattice optical clock using Yb$^+$.
We present a measurement of the branching fractions for decay from the long-lived $5D_{5/2}$ level in Ba. The branching fraction for decay into the $6S_{1/2}$ ground state was found to be $0.846(25)_{mathrm{stat}}(4)_{mathrm{sys}}$. We also report an improved measurement of the $5D_{5/2}$ lifetime, $tau_{5D_{5/2}}=31.2(0.9)$~s. Together these measurements provide the first experimental determination of transition rates for decay out of the $5D_{5/2}$ level. The low ($<7 times 10^{-12}$~Torr) pressure in the ion trap in which these measurements were made simplified data acquisition and analysis. Comparison of the experimental results with theoretical predictions of the transition rates shows good agreement.
