By means of first-principles calculations, we explore systematically the geometric, electronic and piezoelectric properties of multilayer SnSe. We find that these properties are layer-dependent, indicating that the interlayer interaction plays an important role. With increasing the number of SnSe layers from 1 to 6, we observe that the lattice constant decreases from 4.27 $mathring{A}$ to 4.22 $mathring{A}$ along zigzag direction, and increases from 4.41 $mathring{A}$ to 4.51 $mathring{A}$ along armchair direction close to the bulk limit (4.21 $mathring{A}$ and 4.52 $mathring{A}$, respectively); the band gap decreases from 1.45 eV to 1.08 eV, approaching the bulk gap 0.95 eV. Although the monolayer SnSe exhibits almost symmetric geometric and electronic structures along zigzag and armchair directions, bulk SnSe is obviously anisotropic, showing that the stacking of layers enhances the anisotropic character of SnSe. As bulk and even-layer SnSe have inversion centers, they cannot exhibit piezoelectric responses. However, we show that the odd-layer SnSe have piezoelectric coefficients much higher than those of the known piezoelectric materials, suggesting that the odd-layer SnSe is a good piezoelectric material.

We found that the electronic transport property of SnSe single crystals was sensitive to oxygen content. Semiconducting SnSe single crystals were obtained by using Sn of grain form as a starting material while powder Sn resulted in metallic SnSe. X-r ay photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the surfaces of raw Sn were oxidized, where the volume fraction was relatively low in grain Sn. This demonstrates that contamination of oxygen causes metallic behavior in grown SnSe single crystals.
Two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) materials that display ferromagnetism and piezoelectricity have received increased attention. Despite numerous 2D materials have so far been reported as ferromagnetic, developing an air stable and transferable v dW material that is multiferroic has been challenging. To address this problem, we report our work on layered transition metal silicates that are derivatives of kaolinites and lizardites with transition metal substituting on Al$^{3+}$ and Mg$^{2+}$ sites using ab-initio calculations. Using Density Functional Theory (DFT), we show that these compounds are stable under varying O$_2$ partial pressure and can be synthesized using a surface assisted method. We show that these materials have finite out-of-plane piezoelectric response thanks to the lack of inversion symmetry and also they can be tailored to be ferrimagnetic with a non-zero net moment.
We report first principle calculations of electronic and mechanical properties of few-layer borophene with the inclusion of interlayer van der Waals (vdW) interaction. The anisotropic metallic behaviors are preserved from monolayer to few-layer struc tures. The energy splitting of bilayer borophene at $Gamma$ point near the Fermi level is about 1.7 eV, much larger than the values (0.5--1 eV) of other layered semiconductors, indicating much stronger vdW interactions in metallic layered borophene. In particular, the critical strains are enhanced by increasing the number of layers, leading to much more flexibility than that of monolayer structure. On the one hand, because of the buckled atomic structures, the out-of-plane negative Poissons ratios are preserved as the layer-number increases. On the other hand, we find that the in-plane negative Poissons ratios disappear in layered borophene, which is very different from puckered black phosphorus. The negative Poissons ratio will recover if we enlarge the interlayer distance to 6.3 $mboxAA$, indicating that the physical origin behind the change of Poissons ratios is the strong interlayer vdW interactions in layered borophene.
We present results of electronic band structure, Fermi surface and electron transport properties calculations in orthorhombic $n$- and $p$-type SnSe, applying Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and Boltzmann transport approach. The analysis accounted for temperature effect on crystallographic parameters in $Pnma$ structure as well as the phase transition to $CmCm$ structure at $T_csim 807 $K. Remarkable modifications of conduction and valence bands were notified upon varying crystallographic parameters within the structure before $T_c$, while the phase transition mostly leads to jump in the band gap value. The diagonal components of kinetic parameter tensors (velocity, effective mass) and resulting transport quantity tensors (electrical conductivity $sigma$, thermopower $S$ and power factor PF) were computed in wide range of temperature ($15-900 $K) and, hole ($p-$type) and electron ($n-$type) concentration ($10^{17}-10^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$). SnSe is shown to have strong anisotropy of the electron transport properties for both types of charge conductivity, as expected for the layered structure. In general, $p$-type effective masses are larger than $n$-type ones. Interestingly, $p$-type SnSe has strongly non-parabolic dispersion relations, with the pudding-mold-like shape of the highest valence band. The analysis of $sigma$, $S$ and PF tensors indicates, that the inter-layer electron transport is beneficial for thermoelectric performance in $n$-type SnSe, while this direction is blocked in $p$-type SnSe, where in-plane transport is preferred. Our results predict, that $n$-type SnSe is potentially even better thermoelectric material than $p$-type one. Theoretical results are compared with single crystal $p$-SnSe measurements, and good agreement is found.
The electronic and thermoelectric properties of one to four monolayers of MoS$_{2}$, MoSe$_{2}$, WS$_{2}$, and WSe$_{2}$ are calculated. For few layer thicknesses, the near degeneracies of the conduction band $K$ and $Sigma$ valleys and the valence ba nd $Gamma$ and $K$ valleys enhance the n-type and p-type thermoelectric performance. The interlayer hybridization and energy level splitting determine how the number of modes within $k_BT$ of a valley minimum changes with layer thickness. In all cases, the maximum ZT coincides with the greatest near-degeneracy within $k_BT$ of the band edge that results in the sharpest turn-on of the density of modes. The thickness at which this maximum occurs is, in general, not a monolayer. The transition from few layers to bulk is discussed. Effective masses, energy gaps, power-factors, and ZT values are tabulated for all materials and layer thicknesses.
