In nonlinear microresonators driven by continuous-wave (cw) lasers, Turing patterns have been studied in the formalism of Lugiato-Lefever equation with emphasis on its high coherence and exceptional robustness against perturbations. Destabilization of Turing pattern and transition to spatio-temporal chaos, however, limits the available energy carried in the Turing rolls and prevents further harvest of their high coherence and robustness to noise. Here we report a novel scheme to circumvent such destabilization, by incorporating the effect of local mode hybridizations, and attain globally stable Turing pattern formation in chip-scale nonlinear oscillators, achieving a record high power conversion efficiency of 45% and an elevated peak-to-valley contrast of 100. The stationary Turing pattern is discretely tunable across 430 GHz on a THz carrier, with a fractional frequency sideband non-uniformity measured at 7.3x10^-14. We demonstrate the simultaneous microwave and optical coherence of the Turing rolls at different evolution stages through ultrafast optical correlation techniques. The free running Turing roll coherence, 9 kHz in 200 ms and 160 kHz in 20 minutes, is transferred onto a plasmonic photomixer for one of the highest power THz coherent generation at room-temperature, with 1.1% optical-to-THz power conversion. Its long-term stability can be further improved by more than two orders of magnitude, reaching an Allan deviation of 6x10^-10 at 100 s, with a simple computer-aided slow feedback control. The demonstrated on-chip coherent high-power Turing-THz system is promising to find applications in astrophysics, medical imaging, and wireless communications.

Recent advances in the design and fabrication of on-chip optical microresonators has greatly expanded their applications in photonics, enabling metrology, communications, and on-chip lasers. Designs for these applications require fine control of disp ersion, bandwidth and high optical quality factors. Co-engineering these figures of merit remains a significant technological challenge due to design strategies being largely limited to analytical tuning of cross-sectional geometry. Here, we show that photonic inverse-design facilitates and expands the functionality of on-chip microresonators; theoretically and experimentally demonstrating flexible dispersion engineering, quality factor beyond 2 million on the silicon-on-insulator platform with single mode operation, and selective wavelength-band operation.
We developed a coherent frequency-domain THz spectroscopic technique on a coplanar waveguide in the ultrabroad frequency range from 200 MHz to 1.6 THz based on continuous wave (CW) laser spectroscopy. Optical beating created by mixing two frequency-t unable CW lasers is focused on photoconductive switches to generate and detect high-frequency current in a THz circuit. In contrast to time-domain spectroscopy, our frequency-domain spectroscopy enables unprecedented frequency resolution of 10 MHz without using complex building blocks of femtosecond laser optics. Furthermore, due to the coherent nature of the photomixing technique, we are able to identify the origin of multiple reflections in the time domain using the Hilbert analysis and inverse Fourier transform. These results demonstrate that the advantages of on-chip coherent frequency-domain spectroscopy, such as its broadband, frequency resolution, usability, and time-domain accessibility, provide a unique capability for measuring ultrafast electron transport in integrated THz circuits.
Frequency combs have revolutionized time and frequency metrology and in recent years, new frequency comb lasers that are highly compact or even on-chip have been demonstrated in the mid-infrared and THz regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The em erging technologies include electrically pumped quantum and interband cascade semiconductor devices, as well as high-quality factor microresonators. In this guest editorial, the authors summarize recent advances in the field, the potential for rapid broadband spectroscopy, as well as the challenges and prospects for use in molecular gas sensing.
High-order harmonic generation in the presence of a chirped THz pulse is investigated numerically with a complete 3D non-adiabatic model. The assisting THz pulse illuminates the HHG gas cell laterally inducing quasi-phase-matching. We demonstrate tha t it is possible to compensate the phase mismatch during propagation and extend the macroscopic cutoff of a propagated strong IR pulse to the single-dipole cutoff. We obtain two orders of magnitude increase in the harmonic efficiency of cutoff harmonics ($approx$170 eV) using a THz pulse of constant wavelength, and a further factor of 3 enhancement when a chirped THz pulse is used.
We propose an on-chip optical power delivery system for dielectric laser accelerators based on a fractal tree-branch dielectric waveguide network. This system replaces experimentally demanding free-space manipulations of the driving laser beam with c hip-integrated techniques based on precise nano-fabrication, enabling access to orders of magnitude increases in the interaction length and total energy gain for these miniature accelerators. Based on computational modeling, in the relativistic regime, our laser delivery system is estimated to provide 21 keV of energy gain over an acceleration length of 192 um with a single laser input, corresponding to a 108 MV/m acceleration gradient. The system may achieve 1 MeV of energy gain over a distance less than 1 cm by sequentially illuminating 49 identical structures. These findings are verified by detailed numerical simulation and modeling of the subcomponents and we provide a discussion of the main constraints, challenges, and relevant parameters in regards to on-chip laser coupling for dielectric laser accelerators.
