A time series is a sample of observations of well-defined data points obtained through repeated measurements over a certain time range. The analysis of such data samples has become increasingly important not only in natural science but also in many other fields of research. Peranso offers a complete set of powerful light curve and period analysis functions to work with large, astronomical data sets. Substantial attention has been given to ease-of-use and data accuracy, making it one of the most productive time series analysis software available. In this paper, we give an introduction to Peranso and its functionality.

We present results from a detailed analysis of theoretical and observed light curves of classical Cepheid variables in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. Theoretical light curves of Cepheid variables are based on non-linear convective hydrodynamic al pulsation models and the observational data are taken from the ongoing wide-field variability surveys. The variation in theoretical and observed light curve parameters as a function of period, wavelength and metallicity is used to constrain the input physics to the pulsation models, such as the mass-luminosity relations obeyed by Cepheid variables. We also account for the variation in the convective efficiency as input to the stellar pulsation models and its impact on the theoretical amplitudes and Period-Luminosity relations for Cepheid variables.

We present a theoretical light curve model of the recurrent nova M31N 2008-12a, the current record holder for the shortest recurrence period (1 yr). We combined interior structures calculated using a Henyey-type evolution code with optically thick wi nd solutions of hydrogen-rich envelopes, which give the proper mass-loss rates, photospheric temperatures, and luminosities. The light curve model is calculated for a 1.38 M_sun white dwarf (WD) with an accretion rate of 1.6 times 10^{-7} M_sun yr^{-1}. This model shows a very high effective temperature (log T_ph (K) geq 4.97) and a very small wind mass-loss rate (dot M_wind leq 9.3 times 10^{-6} M_sun yr^{-1}) even at the maximum expansion of the photosphere. These properties are consistent with the faint optical peak of M31N 2008-12a because the brightness of the free-free emission is proportional to the square of the mass-loss rate. The model well reproduces the short supersoft X-ray turn-on time of 6 days and turnoff time of 18 days after the outburst. The ejecta mass of our model is calculated to be 6.3 times 10^{-8} M_sun, corresponding to 37% of the accreted mass. The growth rate of the WD is 0.63 times the mass accretion rate, making it a progenitor for a Type Ia supernova. Our light curve model predicts a bright supersoft X-ray phase one or two days before the optical peak. We encourage detection of this X-ray flash in future outbursts.
Photometric observations of exoplanet transits can be used to derive the orbital and physical parameters of an exoplanet. We analyzed several transit light curves of exoplanets that are suitable for ground-based observations whose complete informatio n is available on the Exoplanet Transit Database (ETD). We analyzed transit data of planets including HAT-P-8 b, HAT-P-16 b, HAT-P-21 b, HAT-P-22 b, HAT-P-28 b and HAT-P-30 b using the AstroImageJ (AIJ) software package. In this paper, we investigated 82 transit light curves from ETD, deriving their physical parameters as well as computing their mid-transit times for future Transit Timing Variation (TTV) analyses. The Precise values of the parameters show that using AIJ as a fitting tool for follow-up observations can lead to results comparable to the values at the NASA Exoplanet Archive (the NEA). Such information will be invaluable considering the numbers of future discoveries from the ground and space-based exoplanet surveys.
Photometric observations in V and I bands and low-dispersion spectra of ten ultrashort-period binaries (NSVS 2175434, NSVS 2607629, NSVS 5038135, NSVS 8040227, NSVS 9747584, NSVS 4876238, ASAS 071829-0336.7, SWASP 074658.62+224448.5, NSVS 2729229, NS VS 10632802) are presented. One of them, NSVS 2729229, is newly discovered target. The results from modeling and analysis of our observations revealed that: (i) Eight targets have overcontact configurations with considerable fillout factor (up to 0.5) while NSVS 4876238 and ASAS 0718-03 have almost contact configurations; (ii) NSVS 4876238 is rare ultrashort-period binary of detached type; (iii) all stellar components are late dwarfs; (iv) the temperature difference of the components of each target does not exceed 400 K; (v) NSVS 2175434 and SWASP 074658.62+224448.5 exhibit total eclipses and their parameters could be assumed as well-determined; (v) NSVS 2729229 shows emission in the H_{alpha} line. Masses, radii and luminosities of the stellar components were estimated by the empirical relation period, orbital axis for short- and ultrashort-period binaries. We found linear relations mass-luminosity and mass-radius for the stellar components of our targets.

With the commissioning of the second MAGIC gamma-ray Cherenkov telescope situated close to MAGIC-I, the standard analysis package of the MAGIC collaboration, MARS, has been upgraded in order to perform the stereoscopic reconstruction of the detected atmospheric showers. MARS is a ROOT-based code written in C++, which includes all the necessary algorithms to transform the raw data recorded by the telescopes into information about the physics parameters of the observed targets. An overview of the methods for extracting the basic shower parameters is presented, together with a description of the tools used in the background discrimination and in the estimation of the gamma-ray source spectra.
