We consider the problem of optimally insulating a given domain $Omega$ of ${mathbb{R}}^d$; this amounts to solve a nonlinear variational problem, where the optimal thickness of the insulator is obtained as the boundary trace of the solution. We deal with two different criteria of optimization: the first one consists in the minimization of the total energy of the system, while the second one involves the first eigenvalue of the related differential operator. Surprisingly, the second optimization problem presents a symmetry breaking in the sense that for a ball the optimal thickness is nonsymmetric when the total amount of insulator is small enough. In the last section we discuss the shape optimization problem which is obtained letting $Omega$ to vary too.

We investigate symmetry reduction of optimal control problems for left-invariant control systems on Lie groups, with partial symmetry breaking cost functions. Our approach emphasizes the role of variational principles and considers a discrete-time se tting as well as the standard continuous-time formulation. Specifically, we recast the optimal control problem as a constrained variational problem with a partial symmetry breaking Lagrangian and obtain the Euler--Poincare equations from a variational principle. By applying a Legendre transformation to it, we recover the Lie-Poisson equations obtained by A. D. Borum [Masters Thesis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2015] in the same context. We also discretize the variational principle in time and obtain the discrete-time Lie-Poisson equations. We illustrate the theory with some practical examples including a motion planning problem in the presence of an obstacle.
In this note, we consider the optimization problem associated with computing the rank decomposition of a symmetric tensor. We show that, in a well-defined sense, minima in this highly nonconvex optimization problem break the symmetry of the target te nsor -- but not too much. This phenomenon of symmetry breaking applies to various choices of tensor norms, and makes it possible to study the optimization landscape using a set of recently-developed symmetry-based analytical tools. The fact that the objective function under consideration is a multivariate polynomial allows us to apply symbolic methods from computational algebra to obtain more refined information on the symmetry breaking phenomenon.
We consider theoretically the paramagnetic phases of EuTiO3 that represent configurations created by two sets of microscopic degrees of freedom (m-DOF): positional symmetry breaking due to octahedral rotations and magnetic symmetry breaking due to sp in disorder. The effect of these sets of m-DOFs on the electronic structure and properties of the para phases is assessed by considering sufficiently large (super) cells with the required nominal global average symmetry, allowing, however, the local positional and magnetic symmetries to be lowered. We find that tendencies for local symmetry breaking can be monitored by following total energy lowering in mean-field like density functional theory, without recourse for strong correlation effects. While most nominally cubic ABO3 perovskites are known for their symmetry breaking due to the B-atom sublattice, the case of f-electron magnetism in EuTiO3 is associated with A- sublattice symmetry breaking and its coupling to structural distortions. We find that (i) paramagnetic cubic EuTiO3 has an intrinsic tendency for both magnetic and positional symmetry breaking, while paramagnetic tetragonal EuTiO3 has only magnetic symmetry lowering and no noticeable positional symmetry lowering with respect to low-temperature antiferromagnetic tetragonal phase. (ii) Properly modeled paramagnetic tetragonal and cubic EuTiO3 have a nonzero local magnetic moment on each Eu ion, consistent with the experimental observations of local magnetism in the para phases of EuTiO3 significantly above the Neel temperature. Interestingly, (iii) the local positional distortion modes in the short-range ordered para phases are inherited from the long-range ordered low-temperature antiferromagnetic ground state phase.
The problem of controlling multi-agent systems under different models of information sharing among agents has received significant attention in the recent literature. In this paper, we consider a setup where rather than committing to a fixed informat ion sharing protocol (e.g. periodic sharing or no sharing etc), agents can dynamically decide at each time step whether to share information with each other and incur the resulting communication cost. This setup requires a joint design of agents communication and control strategies in order to optimize the trade-off between communication costs and control objective. We first show that agents can ignore a big part of their private information without compromising the system performance. We then provide a common information approach based solution for the strategy optimization problem. This approach relies on constructing a fictitious POMDP whose solution (obtained via a dynamic program) characterizes the optimal strategies for the agents. We also show that our solution can be easily modified to incorporate constraints on when and how frequently agents can communicate.

This paper applies a reinforcement learning (RL) method to solve infinite horizon continuous-time stochastic linear quadratic problems, where drift and diffusion terms in the dynamics may depend on both the state and control. Based on Bellmans dynami c programming principle, an online RL algorithm is presented to attain the optimal control with just partial system information. This algorithm directly computes the optimal control rather than estimating the system coefficients and solving the related Riccati equation. It just requires local trajectory information, greatly simplifying the calculation processing. Two numerical examples are carried out to shed light on our theoretical findings.
