We study the validity of the Newtonian description of cosmological perturbations using the Lemaitre model, an exact spherically symmetric solution of Einsteins equation. This problem has been investigated in the past for the case of a dust fluid. Here, we extend the previous analysis to the more general case of a fluid with non-negligible pressure, and, for the numerical examples, we consider the case of radiation (P=rho/3). We find that, even when the density contrast has a nonlinear amplitude, the Newtonian description of the cosmological perturbations using the gravitational potential psi and the curvature potential phi is valid as long as we consider sub-horizon inhomogeneities. However, the relation psi+phi={cal O}(phi^2), which holds for the case of a dust fluid, is not valid for a relativistic fluid and effective anisotropic stress is generated. This demonstrates the usefulness of the Lemaitre model which allows us to study in an exact nonlinear fashion the onset of anisotropic stress in fluids with non-negligible pressure. We show that this happens when the characteristic scale of the inhomogeneity is smaller than the sound horizon and that the deviation is caused by the nonlinear effect of the fluids fast motion. We also find that psi+phi= max[{cal O}(phi^2),{cal O}(c_s^2phi , delta)] for an inhomogeneity with density contrast delta whose characteristic scale is smaller than the sound horizon, unless w is close to -1, where w and c_s are the equation of state parameter and the sound speed of the fluid, respectively. On the other hand, we expect psi+phi={cal O}(phi^2) to hold for an inhomogeneity whose characteristic scale is larger than the sound horizon, unless the amplitude of the inhomogeneity is large and w is close to -1.

We provide a formula for estimating the redshift and its secular change (redshift drift) in Lema^itre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) spherically symmetric universes. We compute the scaling of the redshift drift for LTB models that predict Hubble diagrams indisti nguishable from those of the standard cosmological model, the flat $Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($Lambda$CDM) model. We show that the redshift drift for these degenerate LTB models is typically different from that predicted in the $Lambda$CDM scenario. We also highlight and discuss some unconventional redshift-drift signals that arise in LTB universes and give them distinctive features compared to the standard model. We argue that the redshift drift is a metric observable that allows to reduce the degrees of freedom of spherically symmetric models and to make them more predictive and thus falsifiable.

The applicability of a linearized perturbed FLRW metric to the late, lumpy universe has been subject to debate. We consider in an elementary way the Newtonian limit of the Einstein equations with this ansatz for the case of structure formation in lat e-time cosmology, on small and large scales, and argue that linearizing the Einstein tensor produces only a small error down to arbitrarily small, decoupled scales (e.g. Solar system scales). On subhorizon patches, the metric scale factor becomes a coordinate choice equivalent to choosing the spatial curvature, and not a sign that the FLRW metric cannot perturbatively accommodate very different local physical expansion rates of matter; we distinguish these concepts, and show that they merge on large scales for the Newtonian limit to be globally valid. Furthermore, on subhorizon scales, a perturbed FLRW metric ansatz does not already imply assumptions on isotropy, and effects beyond an FLRW background, including those potentially caused by non-linearities of general relativity (GR), may be encoded into non-trivial boundary conditions. The corresponding cosmologies have already been developed in a Newtonian setting by Heckmann and Schucking and none of these boundary conditions can explain the accelerated expansion of the universe. Our analysis of the field equations is confirmed on the level of solutions by an example of pedagogical value, comparing a collapsing top-hat overdensity (embedded into a cosmological background) treated in such perturbative manner to the corresponding exact solution of GR, where we find good agreement even in the regimes of strong density contrast.
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential and matter with energy density $rho_m$, pressure $p_m$, and barotropic equation of state (EoS) $p_m=(gamma-1)rho_m, ; gammain[0,2]$ in Kantowski-Sachs (KS) and closed Friedmann--Lema^itre --Robertson--Walker (FLRW) metrics are investigated. We use methods from non--linear dynamical systems theory and averaging theory considering a time--dependent perturbation function $D$. We define a regular dynamical system over a compact phase space, obtaining global results. That is, for KS metric the global late--time attractors of full and time--averaged systems are two anisotropic contracting solutions, which are non--flat locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Kasner and Taub (flat LRS Kasner) for $0leq gamma leq 2$, and flat FLRW matter--dominated universe if $0leq gamma leq frac{2}{3}$. For closed FLRW metric late--time attractors of full and averaged systems are a flat matter--dominated FLRW universe for $0leq gamma leq frac{2}{3}$ as in KS and Einstein-de Sitter solution for $0leqgamma<1$. Therefore, time--averaged system determines future asymptotics of full system. Also, oscillations entering the system through Klein-Gordon (KG) equation can be controlled and smoothed out when $D$ goes monotonically to zero, and incidentally for the whole $D$-range for KS and for closed FLRW (if $0leq gamma< 1$) too. However, for $gammageq 1$ closed FLRW solutions of the full system depart from the solutions of the averaged system as $D$ is large. Our results are supported by numerical simulations.
