Spherical vacuum and scalar collapse for the Starobinsky R^2 model is simulated. Obtained by considering the quantum-gravitational effects, this model would admit some cases of singularity-free cosmological spacetimes. It is found, however, that in vacuum and scalar collapse, when f or the physical scalar field is strong enough, a black hole including a central singularity can be formed. In addition, near the central singularity, gravity dominates the repulsion from the potential, so that in some circumstances the Ricci scalar is pushed to infinity by gravity. Therefore, the semiclassical effects as included here do not avoid the singularity problem in general relativity. A strong physical scalar field can prevent the Ricci scalar from growing to infinity. Vacuum collapse for the RlnR model is explored, and it is observed that for this model the Ricci scalar can also go to infinity as the central singularity is approached. Therefore, this feature seems universal in vacuum and scalar collapse in f(R) gravity.

In this paper we derive a novel cosmological model from the $f(R,T)$ theory of gravitation, for which $R$ is the Ricci scalar and $T$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. We consider the functional form $f(R,T)=f(R)+f(T)$, with $f(R)$ being th e Starobinksy model, named $R+alpha R^{2}$, and $f(T)=2gamma T$, with $alpha$ and $gamma$ being constants. We show that a hybrid expansion law form for the scale factor is a solution for the derived Friedmann-like equations. In this way, the model is able to predict both the decelerated and the accelerated regimes of expansion of the universe, with the transition redshift between these stages being in accordance with recent observations. We also apply the energy conditions to our material content solutions. Such an application makes us able to obtain the range of acceptability for the free parameters of the model, named $alpha$ and $gamma$.
Assuming that a scalar field controls the inflationary era, we examine the combined effects of string and $f(R)$ gravity corrections on the inflationary dynamics of canonical scalar field inflation, imposing the constraint that the speed of the primo rdial gravitational waves is equal to that of lights. Particularly, we study the inflationary dynamics of an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of $alpha R^2$ corrections, where $alpha$ is a free coupling parameter. As it was the case in the pure Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the realization that the gravitational waves propagate through spacetime with the velocity of light, imposes the constraint that the Gauss-Bonnet coupling function $xi(phi)$ obeys the differential equation $ddotxi=Hdotxi$, where $H$ is the Hubble rate. Subsequently, a relation for the time derivative of the scalar field is extracted which implies that the scalar functions of the model, which are the Gauss-Bonnet coupling and the scalar potential, are interconnected and simply designating one of them specifies the other immediately. In this framework, it is useful to freely designate $xi(phi)$ and extract the corresponding scalar potential from the equations of motion but the opposite is still feasible. We demonstrate that the model can produce a viable inflationary phenomenology and for a wide range of the free parameters. Also, a mentionable issue is that when the coupling parameter $alpha$ of the $R^2$ correction term is $alpha<10^{-3}$ in Planck Units, the $R^2$ term is practically negligible and one obtains the same equations of motion as in the pure Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, however the dynamics still change, since now the time derivative of $frac{partial f}{partial R}$ is nonzero.
We investigate the running vacuum model (RVM) in the framework of scalar field theory. This dynamical vacuum model provides an elegant global explanation of the cosmic history, namely the universe starts from a non-singular initial de Sitter vacuum st age, it passes smoothly from an early inflationary era to a radiation epoch (graceful exit) and finally it enters the dark matter and dark energy (DE) dominated epochs, where it can explain the large entropy problem and predicts a mild dynamical evolution of the DE. Within this phenomenologically appealing context, we formulate an effective {it classical} scalar field description of the RVM through a field $phi$, called the {it vacuumon}, which turns out to be very helpful for an understanding and practical implementation of the physical mechanisms of the running vacuum during both the early universe and the late time cosmic acceleration. In the early universe the potential for the vacuumon may be mapped to a potential that behaves similarly to that of the scalaron field of Starobinsky-type inflation at the {it classical} level, whilst in the late universe it provides an effective scalar field description of DE. The two representations, however, are not physically equivalent since the mechanisms of inflation are entirely different. Moreover, unlike the scalaron, vacuumon is treated as a classical background field, and not a fully fledged quantum field, hence cosmological perturbations will be different between the two pictures of inflation.
In this work we study the scalar power spectrum and the spectral index for the Starobinsky inflationary model using the phase integral method up-to third-order of approximation. We show that the semiclassical methods reproduce the scalar power spectr um for the Starobinsky model with a good accuracy, and the value of the spectral index compares favorably with observations. Also, we compare the results with the uniform approximation method and the second-order slow-roll approximation.
We classify singularities in FRW cosmologies, which dynamics can be reduced to the dynamical system of the Newtonian type. This classification is performed in terms of geometry of a potential function if it has poles. At the sewn singularity, which i s of a finite scale factor type, the singularity in the past meets the singularity in the future. We show, that such singularities appear in the Starobinsky model in $f(hat{R})=hat{R}+gamma hat{R}^2$ in the Palatini formalism, when dynamics is determined by the corresponding piece-wise smooth dynamical system. As an effect we obtain a degenerated singularity. Analytical calculations are given for the cosmological model with matter and the cosmological constant. The dynamics of model is also studied using dynamical system methods. From the phase portraits we find generic evolutionary scenarios of the evolution of the Universe. For this model, the best fit value of $Omega_gamma=3gamma H_0^2$ is equal $9.70times 10^{-11}$. We consider model in both Jordan and Einstein frames. We show that after transition to the Einstein frame we obtain both form of the potential of the scalar field and the decaying Lambda term.
