Bilayer membranes self-assembled from amphiphilic molecules such as lipids, surfactants and block copolymers are ubiquitous in biological and physiochemical systems. The shape and structure of bilayer membranes depend crucially on their mechanical properties such surface tension, bending moduli and line tension. Understanding how the molecular property of the amphiphiles determine the structure and mechanics of the self-assembled bilayers requires a molecularly detailed theoretical framework. The self-consistent field theory provides such a theoretical framework, which is capable of accurately predicting mechanical parameters of self-assembled bilayer membranes. In this mini review we summarize the formulation of the self-consistent field theory, as exemplified by a model system composed of flexible amphiphilic chains dissolved in hydrophilic polymeric solvents, and its application to the study of self-assembled bilayer membranes.

The self-consistent field theory (SCFT) is a powerful framework for the study of the phase behavior and structural properties of many-body systems. In particular, polymeric SCFT has been successfully applied to inhomogeneous polymeric systems such as polymer blends and block copolymer melts. The polymeric SCFT is commonly derived using field-theoretical techniques. Here we provide an alternative derivation of the SCFT equations and SCFT free energy functional using a variational principle. Numerical methods of solving the SCFT equations and applications of the SCFT are also briefly introduced.
We propose a hybrid approach which employs the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) self-energy for the correlated, typically rather localized orbitals and a conventional density functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation potential for the less corre lated, less localized orbitals. We implement this self-energy (plus charge density) self-consistent DFT+DMFT scheme in a basis of maximally localized Wannier orbitals using Wien2K, wien2wannier, and the DMFT impurity solver w2dynamics. As a testbed material we apply the method to SrVO$_3$ and report a significant improvement as compared to previous $d$+$p$ calculations. In particular the position of the oxygen $p$ bands is reproduced correctly, which has been a persistent hassle with unwelcome consequences for the $d$-$p$ hybridization and correlation strength. Taking the (linearized) DMFT self-energy also in the Kohn-Sham equation renders the so-called double-counting problem obsolete.

A self-consistent field theory study of lock and key type interactions between sterically stabilized colloids in polymer solution is performed. Both the key particle and the lock cavity are assumed to have cylindrical shape, and their surfaces are un iformly grafted with polymer chains. The lock-key potential of mean force is computed for various model parameters, such as length of free and grafted chains, lock and key size matching, free chain volume fraction, grafting density, and various enthalpic interactions present in the system. The lock-key interaction is found to be highly tunable, which is important in the rapidly developing field of particle self-assembly.
Directed assembly of block polymers is rapidly becoming a viable strategy for lithographic patterning of nanoscopic features. One of the key attributes of directed assembly is that an underlying chemical or topographic substrate pattern used to direc t assembly need not exhibit a direct correspondence with the sought after block polymer morphology, and past work has largely relied on trial-and-error approaches to design appropriate patterns. In this work, a computational evolutionary strategy is proposed to solve this optimization problem. By combining the Cahn-Hilliard equation, which is used to find the equilibrium morphology, and the covariance-matrix evolutionary strategy, which is used to optimize the combined outcome of particular substrate-copolymer combinations, we arrive at an efficient method for design of substrates leading to non-trivial, desirable outcomes.
Our general interest is in self-consistent-field (scf) theories of disordered fermions. They generate physically relevant sub-ensembles (scf-ensembles) within a given Altland-Zirnbauer class. We are motivated to investigate such ensembles (i) by the possibility to discover new fixed points due to (long-range) interactions; (ii) by analytical scf-theories that rely on partial self-consistency approximations awaiting a numerical validation; (iii) by the overall importance of scf-theories for the understanding of complex interaction-mediated phenomena in terms of effective single-particle pictures. In this paper we present an efficient, parallelized implementation solving scf-problems with spatially local fields by applying a kernel-polynomial approach. Our first application is the Boguliubov-deGennes (BdG) theory of the attractive-$U$ Hubbard model in the presence of on-site disorder; the scf-fields are the particle density $n(mathbf{r})$ and the gap function $Delta(mathbf{r})$. For this case, we reach system sizes unprecedented in earlier work. They allow us to study phenomena emerging at scales substantially larger than the lattice constant, such as the interplay of multifractality and interactions, or the formation of superconducting islands. For example, we observe that the coherence length exhibits a non-monotonic behavior with increasing disorder strength already at moderate $U$. With respect to methodology our results are important because we establish that partial self-consistency (energy-only) schemes as typically employed in analytical approaches tend to miss qualitative physics such as island formation.
