Nonlinear optical methods are becoming ubiquitous in many areas of modern photonics. They are, however, often limited to a certain range of input parameters, such as pulse energy and average power, since restrictions arise from, for example, parasitic nonlinear effects, damage problems and geometrical considerations. Here, we show that many nonlinear optics phenomena in gaseous media are scale-invariant if spatial coordinates, gas density and laser pulse energy are scaled appropriately. We develop a general scaling model for (3+1)-dimensional wave equations, demonstrating the invariant scaling of nonlinear pulse propagation in gases. Our model is numerically applied to high-order harmonic generation and filamentation as well as experimentally verified using the example of pulse post-compression via filamentation. Our results provide a simple recipe for up-or downscaling of nonlinear processes in gases with numerous applications in many areas of science.

Scale invariance emerges and plays an important role in strongly correlated many-body systems such as critical regimes nearby phase transitions and the unitary Fermi gases. Discrete scaling symmetry also manifests itself in quantum few-body systems s uch as the Efimov effect. Here we report both theoretical predication and experimental observation of a novel type expansion dynamics for scale invariant quantum gases. When the frequency of the harmonic trap holding the gas decreases continuously as the inverse of time $t$, surprisingly, the expansion of cloud size exhibits a sequence of plateaus. Remarkably, the locations of these plateaus obey a discrete geometric scaling law with a controllable scale factor and the entire expansion dynamics is governed by a log-periodic function. This striking expansion of quantum Fermi gases shares similar scaling laws and same mathematical description as the Efimov effect. Our work demonstrates the first expansion dynamics of a quantum many-body system with the temporal discrete scaling symmetry, which reveals the underlying spatial continuous scaling symmetry of the many-body system.
Symmetries and their associated selection rules are extremely useful in all fields of science. In particular, for system that include electromagnetic (EM) fields interacting with matter, it has been shown that both of symmetries of matter and EM fiel ds time-dependent polarization play a crucial role in determining the properties of linear and nonlinear responses. The relationship between the systems symmetry and the properties of its excitations facilitate precise control over light emission and enable ultrafast symmetry-breaking spectroscopy of variety of properties. Here. we formulate the first general theory that describes the macroscopic dynamical symmetries (including quasicrystal-like symmetries) of an EM vector field, revealing many new symmetries and selection rules in light-matter interactions. We demonstrate an example of multi-scale selection rules experimentally in the framework of high harmonic generation (HHG). This work waves the way for novel spectroscopic techniques in multi-scale system as well as for imprinting complex structures in EUV-X-ray beams, attosecond pulses, or the interacting medium itself.
A dielectric materials response to light is macroscopically described by electric displacement fields due to polarization and susceptibility, but the atomistic origin is light-cycle-driven motion of electron densities in the restoring forces of the a tomic environment. Here we report how the macroscopic nonlinear-optical response of a heteronuclear crystal relates to the alignment and orientation of its chemical bonds. Substantial nonlinear emission is only observed if the electric field of an optical single-cycle pulse points from the less electronegative to the more electronegative element and not vice versa. This asymmetry is a consequence of the unbalanced real-space motion of valence charges along the direction of the bonds. These results connect a materials chemical structure to the optical response and may facilitate the comprehension and design of novel materials for applications in optics and lasers on basis of the atoms and how they connect.
Motivated by the ongoing controversy on the origin of the nonlinear index saturation and subsequent intensity clamping in femtosecond filaments, we study the atomic nonlinear polarization induced by a high-intensity and ultrashort laser pulse in hydr ogen by numerically solving the time dependent Schrodinger equation. Special emphasis is given to the efficient modeling of the nonlinear polarization at central laser frequency corresponding to 800 nm wavelength. Here, the recently proposed model of the Higher-Order Kerr Effect (HOKE) and t
High-index dielectrics can confine light into nano-scale leading to enhanced nonlinear response. However, increased momentum in these media can deteriorate the overlap between different harmonics which hinders efficient nonlinear interaction in wavel ength-scale resonators in the absence of momentum matching. Here, we propose an alternative approach for light confinement in anisotropic particles. The extra degree of freedom in anisotropic media allows us to control the evanescent waves near the center and the radial momentum away from the center, independently. This can lead to a strong light confinement as well as an excellent field overlap between different harmonics which is ideal for nonlinear wavelength conversion. Controlling the evanescent fields can also help to surpass the constrains on the radiation bandwidth of isotropic dielectric antennas. This can improve the light coupling into these particles, which is crucial for nano-scale nonlinear optics. We estimate the second-harmonic generation efficiency as well as optical parametric oscillation threshold in these particles to show the strong nonlinear response in these particles even away from the center of resonances. Our approach is promising to be realized experimentally and can be used for many applications, such as large-scale parallel sensing and computing.
