Bulk NdNiO_3 and thin films grown along the pseudocubic (001)_pc axis display a 1st order metal to insulator transition (MIT) together with a Neel transition at T=200K. Here, we show that for NdNiO3 films deposited on (111)_pc NdGaO_3 the MIT occurs at T=335K and the Neel transition at T=230 K. By comparing transport and magnetic properties of layers grown on substrates with different symmetries and lattice parameters, we demonstrate a particularly large tuning when the epitaxy is realized on (111)_pc surfaces. We attribute this effect to the specific lattice matching conditions imposed along this direction when using orthorhombic substrates.

We report on the electronic structure of $alpha$-Sn films in the very low thickness regime grown on InSb(111)A. High-resolution low photon energies angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) allows for the direct observation of the linearly dispersing 2D t opological surface states (TSSs) that exist between the second valence band and the conduction band. The Dirac point of this TSS was found to be 200meV below the Fermi level in 10-nm-thick $alpha$-Sn films, which enables the observation of the hybridization gap opening at the Dirac point of the TSS for thinner films. The crossover to a quasi-2D electronic structure is accompanied by a full gap opening at the Brillouin zone center, in agreement with our density functional theory calculations. We further identify the thickness regime of $alpha$-Sn films where the hybridization gap in TSS coexists with the topologically non-trivial electronic structure and one can expect the presence of a 1D helical edge states.
Frustrated rare-earth pyrochlore titanates, Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ have been proposed as promising candidates to realize quantum spin ice (QSI). Multiple exotic quantum phases, including Coulombic ferromagnet, quantum valence-bond s olid, and quadrupolar ordering, have been predicted to emerge in the QSI state upon application of a (111)-oriented external magnetic field. Here, we report on the primal successful layer-by-layer growth of ultra-thin films of frustrated quantum pyrochlores, R$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ (R = Er, Yb, and Tb), along the (111) direction. We confirm their high crystallinity and proper chemical composition by a combination of methods, including in-situ RHEED, x-ray diffraction, reciprocal space mapping, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The availability of large area (111)-oriented QSI structures with planar geometry offers a new complementary to the bulk platform to explore strain and magnetic field dependent properties in the quasi-2D limit.
Nickelates are known for their metal to insulator transition (MIT) and an unusual magnetic ordering, occurring at T=T_Neel. Here, we investigate thin films of SmNiO_3 subjected to different levels of epitaxial strain. We find that the original bulk b ehavior (T_Neel<T_MI) is strongly affected by applying compressive strain to the films. For small compressive strains, a regime where T_Neel=T_MI is achieved, the paramagnetic insulating phase characteristic of the bulk compound is suppressed and the MIT becomes 1st order. Further increasing the in-plane compression of the SmNiO_3 lattice leads to the stabilization of a single metallic paramagnetic phase.
We have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of perovskite SrRu1-xIrxO3 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on atomically-flat (001) SrTiO3 substrates. SrRuO3 has the properties of a ferromagnetic metal with Curie temperature 1 50 K. Substituting Ir for Ru in SrRuO3, films showed fully-metallic behavior and ferromagnetic ordering, although resistivity increased and the ferromagnetic TC decreased. Films with x = 0.25 underwent the metal-to-insulator transition at 75 K, and spin-glass-like ordering at 45 K with the elimination of ferromagnetic long-range ordering caused by the electron localization at the substitution sites. In ferromagnetic films, resistivity increased near-linearly with T, but in paramagnetic film (x = 0.25) resistivity increased as T3/2. Moreover, observed spin-glass-like (TSG) ordering with the negative magnetoresistance in film with x = 0.25; validates the hypothesis that (Anderson) localization favors glassy ordering at amply disorder limit. These observations provide a promising approach for future applications and of fundamental interest in 4d and 5d mixed perovskites.

The electronic properties of SrRuO3/LaAlO3 (SRO/LAO) superlattices with different interlayer thicknesses of SRO layers were studied. As the thickness of SRO layers is reduced, the superlattices exhibit a metal-insulator transition implying transforma tion into a more localized state from its original bulk metallic state. The strain effect on the metal-insulator transition was also examined. The origin of the metal-insulator transition in ultrathin SRO film is discussed. All the superlattices, even those with SRO layers as thin as 2 unit cells, are ferromagnetic at low temperatures. Moreover, we demonstrate field effect devices based on such multilayer superlattice structures.
