We investigate the thermodynamics of simple (non-interacting) transport models beyond the scope of weak coupling. For a single fermionic or bosonic level -- tunnel-coupled to two reservoirs -- exact expressions for the stationary matter and energy current are derived from the solutions of the Heisenberg equations of motion. The positivity of the steady-state entropy production rate is demonstrated explicitly. Finally, for a configuration in which particles are pumped upwards in chemical potential by a downward temperature gradient, we demonstrate that the thermodynamic efficiency of this process decreases when the coupling strength between system and reservoirs is increased, as a direct consequence of the loss of a tight coupling between energy and matter currents.

We report the results of our numerical simulation of classical-dissipative dynamics of a charged particle subjected to a non-markovian stochastic forcing. We find that the system develops a steady-state orbital magnetic moment in the presence of a st atic magnetic field. Very significantly, the sign of the orbital magnetic moment turns out to be {it paramagnetic} for our choice of parameters, varied over a wide range. This is shown specifically for the case of classical dynamics driven by a Kubo-Anderson type non-markovian noise. Natural spatial boundary condition was imposed through (1) a soft (harmonic) confining potential, and (2) a hard potential, approximating a reflecting wall. There was no noticeable qualitative difference. What appears to be crucial to the orbital magnetic effect noticed here is the non-markovian property of the driving noise chosen. Experimental realization of this effect on the laboratory scale, and its possible implications are briefly discussed. We would like to emphasize that the above steady-state classical orbital paramagnetic moment complements, rather than contradicts the Bohr-van Leeuwen (BvL) theorem on the absence of classical orbital diamagnetism in thermodynamic equilibrium.
We study quantum transport after an inhomogeneous quantum quench in a free fermion lattice system in the presence of a localised defect. Using a new rigorous analytical approach for the calculation of large time and distance asymptotics of physical o bservables, we derive the exact profiles of particle density and current. Our analysis shows that the predictions of a semiclassical approach that has been extensively applied in similar problems match exactly with the correct asymptotics, except for possible finite distance corrections close to the defect. We generalise our formulas to an arbitrary non-interacting particle-conserving defect, expressing them in terms of its scattering properties.
While studying systems driven out of equilibrium, one usually employs a drive that is not directly coupled to the degrees of freedom of the system. In contrast to such a case, we here unveil a hitherto unexplored situation of state-dependent driving, whereby a direct coupling exists between the two. We demonstrate the ubiquity of such a driving, and establish that it leads to a nontrivial steady-state that is qualitatively opposite to what is observed in other driven systems. Further, we show how state-dependent driving in a many-body system can be effectively captured in terms of a single-particle model. The origin of this description may ultimately be traced to the fact that state-dependent driving results in a force that undergoes repeated resetting in time.

We study the steady state of the abelian sandpile models with stochastic toppling rules. The particle addition operators commute with each other, but in general these operators need not be diagonalizable. We use their abelian algebra to determine the ir eigenvalues, and the Jordan block structure. These are then used to determine the probability of different configurations in the steady state. We illustrate this procedure by explicitly determining the numerically exact steady state for a one dimensional example, for systems of size $le12$, and also study the density profile in the steady state.
Random dynamical systems (RDS) evolve by a dynamical rule chosen independently with a certain probability, from a given set of deterministic rules. These dynamical systems in an interval reach a steady state with a unique well-defined probability den sity only under certain conditions, namely Pelikans criterion. We investigate and characterize the steady state of a bounded RDS when Pelikans criterion breaks down. In this regime, the system is attracted to a common fixed point (CFP) of all the maps, which is attractive for at least one of the constituent mapping functions. If there are many such fixed points, the initial density is shared among the CFPs; we provide a mapping of this problem with the well known hitting problem of random walks and find the relative weights at different CFPs. The weights depend upon the initial distribution.
