Classical Cepheid variable stars are crucial calibrators of the cosmic distance scale thanks to a relation between their pulsation periods and luminosities. Their archetype, {delta} Cephei, is an important calibrator for this relation. In this paper, we show that {delta} Cephei is a spectroscopic binary based on newly-obtained high-precision radial velocities. We combine these new data with literature data to determine the orbit, which has period 2201 days, semi-amplitude 1.5 km/s, and high eccentricity (e = 0.647). We re-analyze Hipparcos intermediate astrometric data to measure {delta} Cepheis parallax ($varpi = 4.09 pm 0.16$ mas) and find tentative evidence for an orbital signature, although we cannot claim detection. We estimate that Gaia will fully determine the astrometric orbit. Using the available information from spectroscopy, velocimetry, astrometry, and Geneva stellar evolution models ($M_{delta Cep} ~ 5.0 - 5.25 M_odot$), we constrain the companion mass to within $0.2 < M_2 < 1.2 M_odot$. We discuss the potential of ongoing and previous interactions between the companion and {delta} Cephei near pericenter passage, informing reported observations of circumstellar material and bow-shock. The orbit may have undergone significant changes due to a Kozai-Lidov mechanism driven by the outer (visual and astrometric) companion HD 213307. Our discovery of {delta} Cepheis nature as a spectroscopic binary exposes a hidden companion and reveals a rich and dynamical history of the archetype of classical Cepheid variables.

CK Vulpeculae, which erupted in AD 1670-71, was long considered to be a nova outburst; however, recent observations have required that alternative scenarios be considered. Long slit infrared spectroscopy of a forbidden line of iron reported here has revealed high line-of-sight velocities ($simpm900$~km~s$^{-1}$) of the ansae at the tips of the bipolar lobes imaged in H$alpha$ in 2010. The deprojected velocities of the tips are approximately $pm2130$~km~s$^{-1}$ assuming the previously derived inclination angle of $65^circ$ for the axis of cylindrical symmetry of the bipolar nebula. Such high velocities are in stark contrast to previous reports of much lower expansion velocities in CK~Vul. Based on the deprojected velocities of the tips and their angular expansion measured over a 10-year baseline, we derive a revised estimate, with estimated uncertainties, of $3.2^{+0.9}_{-0.6}$~kpc for the distance to CK~Vul. This implies that the absolute visual magnitude at the peak of the 1670 explosion was $M_V = -12.4^{+1.3}_{-2.4}$, indicating that the 1670 event was far more luminous than previous estimates and brighter than any classical nova or any Galactic stellar merger. We propose that CK~Vul belongs to the class of Intermediate Luminosity Optical Transients (ILOTs), objects which bridge the luminosity gap between novae and supernovae. While eruptions in lower luminosity ILOTs are attributed to merger events, the origin of the highly luminous ILOT outbursts is currently not known.

A growing number of Be and Oe stars, named the gamma Cas stars, are known for their unusually hard and intense X-ray emission. This emission could either trace accretion by a compact companion or magnetic interaction between the star and its decretio n disk. To test these scenarios, we carried out a detailed optical monitoring of HD45314, the hottest member of the class of gamma Cas stars, along with dedicated X-ray observations on specific dates. High-resolution optical spectra were taken to monitor the emission lines formed in the disk, while X-ray spectroscopy was obtained at epochs when the optical spectrum of the Oe star was displaying peculiar properties. Over the last four years, HD45314 has entered a phase of spectacular variations. The optical emission lines have undergone important morphology and intensity changes including transitions between single- and multiple-peaked emission lines as well as shell events, and phases of (partial) disk dissipation. Photometric variations are found to be anti-correlated with the equivalent width of the H-alpha emission. Whilst the star preserved its hard and bright X-ray emission during the shell phase, the X-ray spectrum during the phase of (partial) disk dissipation was significantly softer and weaker. The observed behaviour of HD45314 suggests a direct association between the level of X-ray emission and the amount of material simultaneously present in the Oe disk as expected in the magnetic star-disk interaction scenario.

NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 are two massive Galactic bulge globular clusters which share many properties, including the presence of an extended horizontal branch (HB), quite unexpected because of their high metal content. In this paper we use HSTs WFPC2, A CS, and WFC3 images and present a broad multicolor study of their stellar content, covering all main evolutionary branches. The color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) give compelling evidence that both clusters host at least two stellar populations, which manifest themselves in different ways. NGC 6388 has a broadened main sequence (MS), a split sub-giant branch (SGB), and a split red giant branch (RGB) that becomes evident above the HB in our data set; its red HB is also split into two branches. NGC 6441 has a split MS, but only an indication of two SGB populations, while the RGB clearly splits in two from the SGB level upward, and no red HB structure. The multicolor analysis of the CMDs confirms that the He difference between the two main stellar populations in the two clusters must be similar. This is observationally supported by the HB morphology, but also confirmed by the color distribution of the stars in the MS optical band CMDs. However, a MS split becomes evident in NGC 6441 using UV colors, but not in NGC 6388, indicating that the chemical patterns of the different populations are different in the two clusters, with C, N, O abundance differences likely playing a major role. We also analyze the radial distribution of the two populations.

We have analyzed a Chandra HETGS spectrum of the Galactic black hole Cygnus X-1, obtained at a source flux which is approximately twice that commonly observed in its persistent low-intensity, spectrally-hard state. We find a myriad of absorption line s in the spectrum, including Ly-alpha lines and helium-like resonance lines from Ne, Na, Mg, and Si. We calculate a flux-weighted mean red-shift of ~100 km/s and a flux-weighted mean velocity width of 800 km/s (FWHM) for lines from these elements. We also detect a number of transitions from Fe XVIII-XXIV and Ni XIX-XX in absorption; however, the identification of these lines is less certain and a greater range of shifts and breadth is measured. Our observation occurred at a binary phase of phi = 0.76; the lines observed are consistent with absorption in an ionized region of the supergiant O9.7 Iab companion wind. The spectrum is extremely complicated in that a range of temperatures and densities are implied. Prior Chandra HETGS spectra of Cygnus X-1 were obtained in a similar transition state (at phi = 0.93) and in the low/hard state (at phi= 0.84). Considered together, these spectra provide evidence for a companion wind that is focused as it flows onto the black hole primary in this system.
We present and show the features of the FRUITY database, an interactive web-based interface devoted to the nucleosynthesis in AGB stars. We describe the current available set of AGB models (largely expanded with respect to the original one) with mass es in the range 1.3<=M/M_SUN<=3.0 and metallicities -2.15<=[Fe/H]<=+0.15. We illustrate the details of our s-process surface distributions and we compare our results to observations. Moreover, we introduce a new set of models where the effects of rotation are taken into account. Finally, we shortly describe next planned upgrades.
