We present a theory for the current shot noise in long diffusive SNS structures with low-resistive interfaces at arbitrary temperatures. In such structures, the noise is mostly generated by normal electron scattering in the N-region. Whereas the $I$-$V$ characteristics are approximately described by Ohms law, the current noise reveals all characteristic features of the MAR regime: giant enhancement at low voltages, pronounced SGS, and excess noise at large voltages. The most spectacular feature of the noise in the incoherent MAR regime is a universal finite noise level at zero voltage and at zero temperature, $S= 4Delta/3R$. This effect can be understood as the result of the enhancement of the effective charge of the carriers, $q^{it eff}=2Delta/V$, or, alternatively, as the effect of strongly non-equilibrium quasiparticle population in the energy gap region with the effective temperature $T_0=Delta/3$. Under the condition of dominant electron-electron scattering, the junction undergoes crossover to the hot electron regime, with the effective temperature of the subgap electrons decreasing logarithmically with the voltage. Calculation of the noise power has been done on the basis of circuit theory of the incoherent MAR.

Josephson junctions have broad applications in metrology, quantum information processing, and remote sensing. For these applications, the electronic noise is a limiting factor. In this work we study the thermal noise in narrow Josephson junctions usi ng a tight-binding Hamiltonian. For a junction longer than the superconducting coherence length, several self-consistent gap profiles appear close to a phase difference $pi$. They correspond to two stable solutions with an approximately constant phase-gradient over the thin superconductor connected by a $2pi$ phase slip, and a solitonic branch. The current noise power spectrum has pronounced peaks at the transition frequencies between the different states in each branch. We find that the noise is reduced in the gradient branches in comparison to the zero-length junction limit. In contrast, the solitonic branch exhibits an enhanced noise and a reduced current due to the pinning of the lowest excitation energy to close to zero energy.
Current noise is measured with a SQUID in low impedance and transparent Nb-Al-Nb j unctions of length comparable to the phase breaking length and much longer than the thermal length. The shot noise amplitude is compared with theoretical predictions o f doubled shot noise in diffusive normal/superconductor (NS) junctions due to the Andreev reflections. We discuss the heat dissipation away from the normal part through the NS interfaces. A weak applied magnetic field reduces the amplitude of the 1/f noise by a factor of two, showing that even far from equilibrium the sample is in the mesoscopic regime.

We solve the coherent multiple Andreev reflection (MAR) problem and calculate current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) for Josephson SINIS junctions, where S are local-equilibrium superconducting reservoirs, I denotes tunnel barriers, and N is a short diffusive normal wire, the length of which is much smaller than the coherence length, and the resistance is much smaller than the resistance of the tunnel barriers. The charge transport regime in such junctions qualitatively depends on a characteristic value gamma = Delta tau_d of relative phase shifts between the electrons and retro-reflected holes accumulated during the dwell time tau_d. In the limit of small electron-hole dephasing gamma << 1, our solution recovers a known formula for a short mesoscopic connector extended to the MAR regime. At large dephasing, the subharmonic gap structure in the IVC scales with 1/ gamma, which thus plays the role of an effective tunneling parameter. In this limit, the even gap subharmonics are resonantly enhanced, and the IVC exhibits portions with negative differential resistance.
We investigate superconductor/insulator/ferromagnet/superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions in the dirty limit, using the quasiclassical theory. We consider the case of a strong tunnel barrier such that the left S layer and the right FS bila yer are decoupled. We calculate quantitatively the density of states (DOS) in the FS bilayer for arbitrary length of the ferromagnetic layer, using a self-consistent numerical method. We compare these results with a known analytical DOS approximation, which is valid when the ferromagnetic layer is long enough. Finally we calculate quantitatively the current-voltage characteristics of a SIFS junction.
We discuss the quasiparticle entropy and heat capacity of a dirty superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junction. In the case of short junctions, the inverse proximity effect extending in the superconducting banks plays a crucial role in determi ning the thermodynamic quantities. In this case, commonly used approximations can violate thermodynamic relations between supercurrent and quasiparticle entropy. We provide analytical and numerical results as a function of different geometrical parameters. Quantitative estimates for the heat capacity can be relevant for the design of caloritronic devices or radiation sensor applications.
