Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have potential applications in quantum information processing due to the fact that they are potential on-demand sources of single and entangled photons. Generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs was demonstrated using the biexciton-exciton radiative cascade. One obvious way to increase the number of quantum correlated photons that the QDs emit is to use higher-order multiexcitons, in particular the triexciton. Towards achieving this goal, we first demonstrate deterministic generation of the QD-confined triexciton in a well-definedcoherent state and then spectrally identify and directly measure a three-photon radiative cascade resulting from the sequential triexciton-biexciton-exciton radiative recombination.

The electron spin state of a singly charged semiconductor quantum dot has been shown to form a suitable single qubit for quantum computing architectures with fast gate times. A key challenge in realizing a useful quantum dot quantum computing archite cture lies in demonstrating the ability to scale the system to many qubits. In this letter, we report an all optical experimental demonstration of quantum entanglement between a single electron spin confined to single charged semiconductor quantum dot and the polarization state of a photon spontaneously emitted from the quantum dots excited state. We obtain a lower bound on the fidelity of entanglement of 0.59, which is 84% of the maximum achievable given the timing resolution of available single photon detectors. In future applications, such as measurement based spin-spin entanglement which does not require sub-nanosecond timing resolution, we estimate that this system would enable near ideal performance. The inferred (usable) entanglement generation rate is 3 x 10^3 s^-1. This spin-photon entanglement is the first step to a scalable quantum dot quantum computing architecture relying on photon (flying) qubits to mediate entanglement between distant nodes of a quantum dot network.
The realization of a functional quantum repeater is one of the major research goals in long-distance quantum communication. Among the different approaches that are being followed, the one relying on quantum memories interfaced with deterministic quan tum emitters is considered as among one of the most promising solutions. In this work, we focus on memory-based quantum-repeater schemes that rely on semiconductor quantum dots for the generation of polarization entangled photons. Going through the most relevant figures of merit related to efficiency of the photon source, we select significant developments in fabrication, processing and tuning techniques aimed at combining high degree of entanglement with on-demand pair generation, with a special focus on the progress achieved in the representative case of the GaAs system. We proceed to offer a perspective on integration with quantum memories, both highlighting preliminary works on natural-artificial atomic interfaces and commenting a wide choice of currently available and potentially viable memory solutions in terms of wavelength, bandwidth and noise-requirements. To complete the overview, we also present recent implementations of entanglement-based quantum communication protocols with quantum dots and highlight the next challenges ahead for the implementation of practical quantum networks.
Single-photon sources based on semiconductor quantum dots have emerged as an excellent platform for high efficiency quantum light generation. However, scalability remains a challenge since quantum dots generally present inhomogeneous characteristics. Here we benchmark the performance of fifteen deterministically fabricated single-photon sources. They display an average indistinguishability of 90.6 +/- 2.8 % with a single-photon purity of 95.4 +/- 1.5 % and high homogeneity in operation wavelength and temporal profile. Each source also has state-of-the-art brightness with an average first lens brightness value of 13.6 +/- 4.4 %. Whilst the highest brightness is obtained with a charged quantum dot, the highest quantum purity is obtained with neutral ones. We also introduce various techniques to identify the nature of the emitting state. Our study sets the groundwork for large-scale fabrication of identical sources by identifying the remaining challenges and outlining solutions.
Precise nanofabrication represents a critical challenge to developing semiconductor quantum-dot qubits for practical quantum computation. Here, we design and train a convolutional neural network to interpret in-line scanning electron micrographs and quantify qualitative features affecting device functionality. The high-throughput strategy is exemplified by optimizing a model lithographic process within a five-dimensional design space and by demonstrating a new approach to address lithographic proximity effects. The present results emphasize the benefits of machine learning for developing robust processes, shortening development cycles, and enforcing quality control during qubit fabrication.
We propose methods for realization of continuous two photon source using coherently pumped quantum dot embedded inside a photonic crystal cavity. We analyze steady state population in quantum dot energy levels and field inside the cavity mode. We fin d conditions for population inversion in coherently pumped and incoherently pumped quantum dot. We show that squeezing in the output for two two photon laser is not visible using coherent as well as incoherent pump. We discuss effect of phonon coupling using recently developed polaron transformed master equation at low temperatures. We also propose scheme for generating squeezed state of field using four wave mixing.
