We report on the possibility of valley number fractionalization in graphene with a topological defect that is accounted for in Dirac equation by a pseudomagnetic field. The valley number fractionalization is attributable to an imbalance on the number of one particle states in one of the two Dirac points with respect to the other and it is related to the flux of the pseudomagnetic field. We also discuss the analog effect the topological defect might lead in the induced spin polarization of the charge carriers in graphene.

We investigate the effect of topological defects on the transport properties of a narrow ballistic ribbon of graphene with zigzag edges. Our results show that the longitudinal conductance vanishes at several discrete Fermi energies where the system d evelops loop orbital electric currents with certain chirality. The chirality depends on the direction of the applied bias voltage and the sign of the local curvature created by the topological defects. This novel quantum blockade phenomenon provides a new way to generate a magnetic moment by an external electric field, which can prove useful in carbon electronics.
Electron spin and pseudospin degrees of freedom play a critical role in many-body phenomena through exchange interactions, the understanding and control of which enable the construction of states with complex topological orders and exotic excitations . In this work, we demonstrate fine control of the valley isospin in high-quality bilayer graphene devices and its profound impact in realizing fractional quantum Hall effect with different ground state orders. We present evidence for a new even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state in bilayer graphene, its spontaneous valley polarization in the limit of zero valley Zeeman energy, and the breaking of particle-hole symmetry. These observations support the Moore-Read anti-Pfaffian order. Our experiments establish valley isospin in bilayer graphene to be a powerful experimental knob and open the door to engineering non-Abelian states and quantum information processes in a quantum Hall platform.
Valley pseudospin, the quantum degree of freedom characterizing the degenerate valleys in energy bands, is a distinct feature of two-dimensional Dirac materials. Similar to spin, the valley pseudospin is spanned by a time reversal pair of states, tho ugh the two valley pseudospin states transform to each other under spatial inversion. The breaking of inversion symmetry induces various valley-contrasted physical properties; for instance, valley-dependent topological transport is of both scientific and technological interests. Bilayer graphene (BLG) is a unique system whose intrinsic inversion symmetry can be controllably broken by a perpendicular electric field, offering a rare possibility for continuously tunable valley-topological transport. Here, we used a perpendicular gate electric field to break the inversion symmetry in BLG, and a giant nonlocal response was observed as a result of the topological transport of the valley pseudospin. We further showed that the valley transport is fully tunable by external gates, and that the nonlocal signal persists up to room temperature and over long distances. These observations challenge contemporary understanding of topological transport in a gapped system, and the robust topological transport may lead to future valleytronic applications.

The valley degeneracy of electron states in graphene stimulates intensive research of valley-related optical and transport phenomena. While many proposals on how to manipulate valley states have been put forward, experimental access to the valley pol arization in graphene is still a challenge. Here, we develop a theory of the second optical harmonic generation in graphene and show that this effect can be used to measure the degree and sign of the valley polarization. We show that, at the normal incidence of radiation, the second harmonic generation stems from imbalance of carrier populations in the valleys. The effect has a specific polarization dependence reflecting the trigonal symmetry of electron valley and is resonantly enhanced if the energy of incident photons is close to the Fermi energy.

We show that fractional charges bound to topological defects in the recently proposed time-reversal-invariant models on honeycomb and square lattices obey fractional statistics. The effective low-energy description is given in terms of a `doubled lev el-2 Chern-Simons field theory, which is parity and time-reversal invariant and implies two species of semions (particles with statistical angle pi/2) labeled by a new emergent quantum number that we identify as the fermion axial charge.
