The double differential cross sections for $^{nat}$In($^{28}$Si, $pi ^{pm}$) reactions are measured at 400, 600, and 800 MeV/nucleon. Both $pi^+$ and $pi^-$ are found to be emitted isotropically from a single moving source. The $pi^- / pi^+$ yield ratio is determined as a function of the charged pion energy between 25 and 100 MeV. The experimental results significantly differ from the prediction of the standard transport model calculation using the code PHITS. This discrepancy suggests that more theoretical works are required to deduce firm information on the nuclear symmetry energy from the $pi^- / pi^+$ yield ratio.

The possible occurence of highly deformed configurations is investigated in the $^{40}$Ca and $^{56}$Ni di-nuclear systems as formed in the $^{28}$Si+$^{12}$C,$^{28}$Si reactions by using the properties of emitted light charged particles. Inclusive a s well as exclusive data of the heavy fragments and their associated light charged particles have been collected by using the {sc ICARE} charged particle multidetector array. The data are analysed by Monte Carlo CASCADE statistical-model calculations using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. Significant deformation effects at high spin are observed as well as an unexpected large $^{8}$Be cluster emission of a binary nature.
Measurements of charged pion and kaon production are presented in centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy as well as in semi-central C+C and Si+Si interactions at 40A GeV. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra and total yields are determined as a function of centrality. The system-size and centrality dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy are derived from the data presented here and published data for C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158A GeV beam energy. At both energies a steep increase with centrality is observed for small systems followed by a weak rise or even saturation for higher centralities. This behavior is compared to calculations using transport models (UrQMD and HSD), a percolation model and the core-corona approach.
Velocity and energy spectra of the light charged particles (protons and $alpha$-particles) emitted in the $^{28}$Si(E$_{lab}$ = 112 MeV) + $^{28}$Si reaction have been measured at the Strasbourg VIVITRON Tandem facility. The ICARE charged particle mu ltidetector array was used to obtain exclusive spectra of the light particles in the angular range 15 - 150 degree and to determine the angular correlations of these particles with respect to the emission angles of the evaporation residues. The experimental data are analysed in the framework of the statistical model. The exclusive energy spectra of $alpha$-particles emitted from the $^{28}$Si + $^{28}$Si compound system are generally well reproduced by Monte Carlo calculations using spin-dependent level densities. This spin dependence approach suggests the onset of large deformations at high spin. A re-analysis of previous $alpha$-particle data from the $^{30}$Si + $^{30}$Si compound system, using the same spin-dependent parametrization, is also presented in the framework of a general discussion of the occurrence of large deformation effects in the A$_{CN}$ ~ 60 mass region.

Results are presented of a two-pion interferometry (HBT) analysis in Pb+Au collisions at 40, 80, and 158 AGeV. A detailed study of the Bertsch-Pratt HBT radius parameters has been performed as function of the mean pair transverse momentum $k_t$ and i n bins of the centrality of the collision. From these results we extract model dependent information about the space-time evolution of the reaction. An investigation of the effective volume of the pion emitting system provides an important tool to study the properties of thermal pion freeze-out.

Excitation functions of the $^{58}$Ni$(n,p)^{58}$Co$^{m,g}$ reactions were measured in the energy range from 2 to 15 MeV. The energy dependence of the isomeric cross-section ratio R=sigma_m/(sigma_m+sigma_g) is deduced from the measured data. The sha pe and magnitude of the R(E_n) function are described by model calculations using a consistent parameter set. Questions of the input level scheme were solved based on the accurate isomeric ratio measured at low energy region.
