Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) relates key cosmological parameters to the primordial abundance of light elements. In this paper, we point out that the recent observations of Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies by the Planck satellite and by the BICEP2 experiment constrain these parameters with such a high level of accuracy that the primordial deuterium abundance can be inferred with remarkable precision. For a given cosmological model, one can obtain independent information on nuclear processes in the energy range relevant for BBN, which determine the eventual ^2H/H yield. In particular, assuming the standard cosmological model, we show that a combined analysis of Planck data and of recent deuterium abundance measurements in metal-poor damped Lyman-alpha systems provides independent information on the cross section of the radiative capture reaction d(p,gamma)^3He converting deuterium into helium. Interestingly, the result is higher than the values suggested by a fit of present experimental data in the BBN energy range (10 - 300 keV), whereas it is in better agreement with ab initio theoretical calculations, based on models for the nuclear electromagnetic current derived from realistic interactions. Due to the correlation between the rate of the above nuclear process and the effective number of neutrinos Neff, the same analysis points out a Neff>3 as well. We show how this observation changes when assuming a non-minimal cosmological scenario. We conclude that further data on the d(p,gamma)^3He cross section in the few hundred keV range, that can be collected by experiments like LUNA, may either confirm the low value of this rate, or rather give some hint in favour of next-to-minimal cosmological scenarios.

The recent BICEP2 measurement of primordial gravity waves (r = 0.2^{+0.07}_{-0.05}) appears to be in tension with the upper limit from WMAP (r<0.13 at 95% CL) and Planck (r<0.11 at 95% CL). We carefully quantify the level of tension and show that it is very significant (around 0.1% unlikely) when the observed deficit of large-scale temperature power is taken into account. We show that measurements of TE and EE power spectra in the near future will discriminate between the hypotheses that this tension is either a statistical fluke, or a sign of new physics. We also discuss extensions of the standard cosmological model that relieve the tension, and some novel ways to constrain them.
We report the results of a joint analysis of data from BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck. BICEP2 and Keck Array have observed the same approximately 400 deg$^2$ patch of sky centered on RA 0h, Dec. $-57.5deg$. The combined maps reach a depth of 57 nK deg in Stokes $Q$ and $U$ in a band centered at 150 GHz. Planck has observed the full sky in polarization at seven frequencies from 30 to 353 GHz, but much less deeply in any given region (1.2 $mu$K deg in $Q$ and $U$ at 143 GHz). We detect 150$times$353 cross-correlation in $B$-modes at high significance. We fit the single- and cross-frequency power spectra at frequencies $geq 150$ GHz to a lensed-$Lambda$CDM model that includes dust and a possible contribution from inflationary gravitational waves (as parameterized by the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$), using a prior on the frequency spectral behavior of polarized dust emission from previous planck analysis of other regions of the sky. We find strong evidence for dust and no statistically significant evidence for tensor modes. We probe various model variations and extensions, including adding a synchrotron component in combination with lower frequency data, and find that these make little difference to the $r$ constraint. Finally we present an alternative analysis which is similar to a map-based cleaning of the dust contribution, and show that this gives similar constraints. The final result is expressed as a likelihood curve for $r$, and yields an upper limit $r_{0.05}<0.12$ at 95% confidence. Marginalizing over dust and $r$, lensing $B$-modes are detected at $7.0,sigma$ significance.
In this work we discuss the possibility of cosmic defects being responsible for the B-mode signal measured by the BICEP2 collaboration. We also allow for the presence of other cosmological sources of B-modes such as inflationary gravitational waves a nd polarized dust foregrounds, which might contribute to or dominate the signal. On the one hand, we find that defects alone give a poor fit to the data points. On the other, we find that defects help to improve the fit at higher multipoles when they are considered alongside inflationary gravitational waves or polarized dust. Finally, we derive new defect constraints from models combining defects and dust. This proceeding is based on previous works [1,2].
In this work we update the bounds on $sum m_{ u}$ from latest publicly available cosmological data and likelihoods using Bayesian analysis, while explicitly considering particular neutrino mass hierarchies. In the minimal $Lambdatextrm{CDM}+sum m_{ u }$ model with most recent CMB data from Planck 2018 TT,TE,EE, lowE, and lensing; and BAO data from BOSS DR12, MGS, and 6dFGS, we find that at 95% C.L. the bounds are: $sum m_{ u}<0.12$ eV (degenerate), $sum m_{ u}<0.15$ eV (normal), $sum m_{ u}<0.17$ eV (inverted). The bounds vary across the different mass orderings due to different priors on $sum m_{ u}$. Also, we find that the normal hierarchy is very mildly preferred relative to the inverted, using both minimum $chi^2$ values and Bayesian Evidence ratios. In this paper we also provide bounds on $sum m_{ u}$ considering different hierarchies in various extended cosmological models: $Lambdatextrm{CDM}+sum m_{ u}+r$, $wtextrm{CDM}+sum m_{ u}$, $w_0 w_a textrm{CDM}+sum m_{ u}$, $w_0 w_a textrm{CDM}+sum m_{ u}$ with $w(z)geq -1$, $Lambda textrm{CDM} + sum m_{ u} + Omega_k$, and $Lambda textrm{CDM} + sum m_{ u} + A_{textrm{Lens}}$. We do not find any strong evidence of normal hierarchy over inverted hierarchy in the extended models either.
We present the strongest constraints to date on anisotropies of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization rotation derived from 150 GHz data taken by the BICEP2/Keck Array CMB experiments up to and including the 2014 observing season (BK14). The definition of the polarization angle in BK14 maps has gone through self-calibration in which the overall angle is adjusted to minimize the observed TB and EB power spectra. After this procedure, the QU maps lose sensitivity to a uniform polarization rotation but are still sensitive to anisotropies of polarization rotation. This analysis places constraints on the anisotropies of polarization rotation, which could be generated by CMB photons interacting with axionlike pseudoscalar fields or Faraday rotation induced by primordial magnetic fields. The sensitivity of BK14 maps ($sim 3mu$K-arcmin) makes it possible to reconstruct anisotropies of the polarization rotation angle and measure their angular power spectrum much more precisely than previous attempts. Our data are found to be consistent with no polarization rotation anisotropies, improving the upper bound on the amplitude of the rotation angle spectrum by roughly an order of magnitude compared to the previous best constraints. Our results lead to an order of magnitude better constraint on the coupling constant of the Chern-Simons electromagnetic term $g_{agamma}leq 7.2times 10^{-2}/H_I$ (95% confidence) than the constraint derived from the B-mode spectrum, where $H_I$ is the inflationary Hubble scale. This constraint leads to a limit on the decay constant of $10^{-6}lesssim f_a/M_{rm pl}$ at mass range of $10^{-33}< m_a< 10^{-28}$ eV for $r=0.01$, assuming $g_{agamma}simalpha/(2pi f_a)$ with $alpha$ denoting the fine structure constant. The upper bound on the amplitude of the primordial magnetic fields is 30nG (95% confidence) from the polarization rotation anisotropies.
