This paper gives an overview of recent research on the performance evaluation and design of carousel systems. We discuss picking strategies for problems involving one carousel, consider the throughput of the system for problems involving two carousels, give an overview of related problems in this area, and present an extensive literature review. Emphasis has been given on future research directions in this area.

We present analytic results for warehouse systems involving pairs of carousels. Specifically, for various picking strategies, we show that the sojourn time of the picker satisfies an integral equation that is a contraction mapping. As a result, numer ical approximations for performance measures such as the throughput of the system are extremely accurate and converge fast (e.g. within 5 iterations) to their real values. We present simulation results validating our results and examining more complicated strategies for pairs of carousels.

We consider the problem of stochastic flow of multiple particles traveling on a closed loop, with a constraint that particles move without passing. We use a Markov chain description that reduces the problem to a generalized random walk on a hyperplan e (with boundaries). By expressing positions via a moving reference frame, the geometry of the no-passing criteria is greatly simplified, with the resultant condition expressible as the coordinate system planes which bound the first orthant. To determine state transition probabilities, we decompose transitions into independent events and construct a digraph representation in which calculating transition probability is reduced to a shortest path determination on the digraph. The resultant decomposition digraph is self-converse, and we exploit that property to establish the necessary symmetries to find the stationary density for the process.
We show that at any location away from the spectral edge, the eigenvalues of the Gaussian unitary ensemble and its general beta siblings converge to Sine_beta, a translation invariant point process. This process has a geometric description in term of the Brownian carousel, a deterministic function of Brownian motion in the hyperbolic plane. The Brownian carousel, a description of the a continuum limit of random matrices, provides a convenient way to analyze the limiting point processes. We show that the gap probability of Sine_beta is continuous in the gap size and $beta$, and compute its asymptotics for large gaps. Moreover, the stochastic differential equation version of the Brownian carousel exhibits a phase transition at beta=2.

XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit heterogeneous data from multiple sources. However, XML-native database systems currently suffer from limited performances in terms of manageable data volume and response time for complex analytical queries. Fragmenting and distributing XML data warehouses (e.g., on data grids) allow to address both these issues. In this paper, we work on XML warehouse fragmentation. In relational data warehouses, several studies recommend the use of derived horizontal fragmentation. Hence, we propose to adapt it to the XML context. We particularly focus on the initial horizontal fragmentation of dimensions XML documents and exploit two alternative algorithms. We experimentally validate our proposal and compare these alternatives with respect to a unified XML warehouse model we advocate for.
Spin systems with hyperbolic symmetry originated as simplified models for the Anderson metal--insulator transition, and were subsequently found to exactly describe probabilistic models of linearly reinforced walks and random forests. In this survey w e introduce these models, discuss their origins and main features, some existing tools available for their study, recent probabilistic results, and relations to other well-studied probabilistic models. Along the way we discuss some of the (many) open questions that remain.
