We discuss the homological aspects of the connection between quantum string generating function and the formal power series associated to the dimensions of chains and homologies of suitable Lie algebras. Our analysis can be considered as a new straightforward application of the machinery of modular forms and spectral functions (with values in the congruence subgroup of $SL(2,{mathbb Z})$) to the partition functions of Lagrangian branes, refined vertex and open string partition functions, represented by means of formal power series that encode Lie algebra properties. The common feature in our examples lies in the modular properties of the characters of certain representations of the pertinent affine Lie algebras and in the role of Selberg-type spectral functions of an hyperbolic three-geometry associated with $q$-series in the computation of the string amplitudes.

It is shown that the generating function of $mathscr{N}=2$ topological strings, in the heterotic weak coupling limit, is identified with the partition function of a six-dimensional Melvin background. This background, which corresponds to an exact CFT , realises in string theory the six-dimensional $varOmega$-background of Nekrasov, in the case of opposite deformation parameters $epsilon_1=-epsilon_2$, thus providing the known perturbative part of the Nekrasov partition function in the field theory limit. The analysis is performed on both heterotic and type I strings and for the cases of ordinary $mathscr{N}=2$ and $mathscr{N}=2^*$ theories.
We analyse the role of vertex operator algebra and 2d amplitudes from the point of view of the representation theory of infinite dimensional Lie algebras, MacMahon and Ruelle functions. A p-dimensional MacMahon function is the generating function of p-dimensional partitions of integers. These functions can be represented as amplitudes of a two-dimensional c=1 CFT. In this paper we show that p-dimensional MacMahon functions can be rewritten in terms of Ruelle spectral functions, whose spectrum is encoded in the Patterson-Selberg function of three dimensional hyperbolic geometry.
The method of topological renormalization in anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity consists in adding to the action a topological term which renders it finite, defining at the same time a well-posed variational problem. Here, we use this prescription to work out the thermodynamics of asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (AlAdS) spacetimes, focusing on the physical properties of the Misner strings of both the Taub-NUT-AdS and Taub-Bolt-AdS solutions. We compute the contribution of the Misner string to the entropy by treating on the same footing the AdS and AlAdS sectors. As topological renormalization is found to correctly account for the physical quantities in the parity preserving sector of the theory, we then investigate the holographic consequences of adding also the Chern-Pontryagin topological invariant to the bulk action; in particular, we discuss the emergence of the parity-odd contribution in the boundary stress tensor.
In this article we exploit Ruelle-type spectral functions and analyze the Verma module over Virasoro algebra, boson-fermion correspondence, the analytic torsion, the Chern-Simons and $eta$ invariants, as well as the generation function associated to dimensions of the Hochschild homology of the crossed product $mathbb{C}[S_n]ltimes mathcal{A}^{otimes n}$ ($mathcal{A}$ is the $q$-Weyl algebra). After analysing the Chern-Simons and $eta$ invariants of Dirac operators by using irreducible $SU(n)$-flat connections on locally symmetric manifolds of non-positive section curvature, we describe the exponential action for the Chern-Simons theory.

We construct a covariant closed string field theory by extending recent works on the covariant open string field theory in the proper-time gauge. Rewriting the string scattering amplitudes generated by the closed string field theory in terms of the P olyakov string path integrals, we identify the Fock space representations of the closed string vertices. We show that the Fock space representations of the closed string field theory may be completely factorized into those of the open string field theory. It implies that the well known Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations of the first quantized string theory may be promoted to the second quantized closed string theory. We explicitly calculate the scattering amplitudes of three gravitons by using the closed string field theory in the proper-time gauge.
