The extended supersymmetric SO(10) model with missing partner mechanism is studied. An intermediate vacuum expectation value is incorporated which corresponds to the see-saw scale. Gauge coupling unification is not broken explicitly. Proton decay is found to satisfy the present experimental limits at the cost of fine-tuning some parameters.

We present a new possibility for achieving doublet-triplet splitting naturally in supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified theories. It is based on a missing partner mechanism which is realized with the 126 + 126-bar Higgs superfields. These Higgs fields, which are also needed for generating Majorana right-handed neutrino masses, contain a pair of color triplets in excess of weak doublets. This feature enables us to remove the color triplets from the low energy spectrum without fine-tuning. We give all the needed ingredients for a successful implementation of the missing partner mechanism in SO(10) and present explicit models wherein the Higgs doublet mass is protected against possible non-renormalizable corrections to all orders. We also show how realistic fermion masses can be generated in this context.
We propose a mechanism to suppress proton decay induced by dimension-5 operators in a supersymmetric SO(10) model. Proton lifetime is directly connected with the intermediate vacuum expectation value which is responsible for the seesaw mechanism. The model shows many consistencies with the present theoretical results such as the components of the two Higgs doublets in the minimal supersymmetric standard model.
Grand Unified Theories (GUT) predict proton decay as well as the formation of cosmic strings which can generate gravitational waves. We determine which non-supersymmetric $SO(10)$ breaking chains provide gauge unification in addition to a gravitation al signal from cosmic string decay. We calculate the GUT and intermediate scales for these $SO(10)$ breaking chains by solving the renormalisation group equations at the two-loop level. This analysis predicts the GUT scale, hence the proton lifetime, in addition to the scale of cosmic string generation and thus the associated gravitational wave signal. We determine which $SO(10)$ breaking chains survive in the event of the null results of the next generation of gravitational waves and proton decay searches and determine the correlations between proton decay and gravitational waves scales if these observables are measured.
Obtaining realistic supersymmetry preserving vacua in the minimal renormalizable supersymmetric $Spin(10)$ GUT model introduces considerations of the non-trivial topology of the vacuum manifold. The $D$-parity of low energy unification schemes gets l ifted to a one-parameter subgroup $U(1)_D$ of $Spin(10)$. Yet, the choice of the fields signaling spontaneous symmetry breaking leads to disconnected subsets in the vacuum manifold related by the $D$-parity. The resulting domain walls, existing due to topological reasons but not stable, are identified as topological pseudodefects. We obtain a class of one-parameter paths connecting $D$-parity flipped vacua and compute the energy barrier height along the same. We consider the various patterns of symmetry breaking which can result in either intermediate scale gauge groups or a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. If the onset of inflation is subsequent to GUT breaking, as could happen also if inflation is naturally explained by the same GUT, the existence of such pseudodefects can leave signatures in the CMB. Specifically, this could have an impact on the scale invariance of the CMB fluctuations and LSS data at the largest scale.

We apply the perturbative grand unification due to renormalization to distinguish TeV-scale relics of supersymmetric $rm{SO}(10)$ scenarios. With rational theoretical constraints taken into account, we find that for the breaking pattern of either $rm {SU}(5)$ or Pati-Salam only extra matter $mathbf{16}$ supermultiplet of $SO(10)$ can appear at TeV scale, apart from MSSM spectrum.
