Owing to the variety of possible charge and spin states and to the different ways of coupling to the environment, paramagnetic centres in wide band-gap semiconductors and insulators exhibit a strikingly rich spectrum of properties and functionalities, exploited in commercial light emitters and proposed for applications in quantum information. Here we demonstrate, by combining synchrotron techniques with magnetic, optical and emph{ab initio} studies, that the codoping of GaN:Mn with Mg allows to control the Mn$^{n+}$ charge and spin state in the range $3le nle 5$ and $2ge Sge 1$. According to our results, this outstanding degree of tunability arises from the formation of hitherto concealed cation complexes Mn-Mg$_k$, where the number of ligands $k$ is pre-defined by fabrication conditions. The properties of these complexes allow to extend towards the infrared the already remarkable optical capabilities of nitrides, open to solotronics functionalities, and generally represent a fresh perspective for magnetic semiconductors.
We study 1 or 2 neighboring Mn impurities, as well as complexes of 1 Mn and 1 or 2 Mg ions in a 64 atoms supercell of GaN by means of density functional calculations. Taking into account the electron correlation in the local spin density approximatio
Noncollinear antiferromagnets have promising potential to replace ferromagnets in the field of spintronics as high-density devices with ultrafast operation. To take full advantage of noncollinear antiferromagnets in spintronics applications, it is im
We report electrical current switching of noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mn$_3$GaN/Pt bilayers at room temperature. The Hall resistance of these bilayers can be manipulated by applying a pulse current of $1.5times10^6$~A/cm$^2$, whereas no sign
We report the discovery of a new spin glass ground state in the transition metal monosilicides with the B20 crystallographic structure. Magnetic, transport, neutron and muon investigation of the solid solution Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si have revealed a new
An individual Mn acceptor in GaAs is mapped by Cross-sectional Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (X-STM) at room temperature and a strongly anisotropic shape of the acceptor state is observed. An acceptor state manifests itself as a cross-like feature wh
