We report on the observation of the hysteretic transition of a commensurate charge modulation in IrTe$_2$ from transport and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies. Below the transition ($T_{rm C} approx 275$ K on cooling) a $q = 1/5$ charge modulation was observed, which is consistent with previous studies. Additional modulations [$q_n = (3n+2)^{-1}$] appear below a second transition at $T_{rm S}approx 180$ K on cooling. The coexistence of various modulations persist up to $T_{rm C}$ on warming. The atomic structures of charge modulations and the temperature dependent STM studies suggest that 1/5 modulation is a periodic soliton lattice which partially melts below $T_{rm S}$ on cooling. Our results provide compelling evidence that the ground state of IrTe$_2$ is a commensurate 1/6 charge modulation, which originates from periodic dimerization of Te atoms visualized by atomically resolved STM images.

Neutron diffraction has been used to determine the magnetic structure of Na$_8$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$, a stoichiometric compound containing chains based on edge-sharing CuO$_4$ plaquettes. The chains are doped with 2/5 hole per Cu site and exhibit long-range commensurate charge order with an onset well above room temperature. Below $T_N = 23$ K, the neutron data indicate long-range collinear magnetic order with a spin density modulation whose propagation vector is commensurate along and incommensurate perpendicular to the chains. Competing interchain exchange interactions are discussed as a possible origin of the incommensurate magnetic order.

Hysteresis underlies a large number of phase transitions in solids, giving rise to exotic metastable states that are otherwise inaccessible. Here, we report an unconventional hysteretic transition in a quasi-2D material, EuTe4. By combining transport , photoemission, diffraction, and x-ray absorption measurements, we observed that the hysteresis loop has a temperature width of more than 400 K, setting a record among crystalline solids. The transition has an origin distinct from known mechanisms, lying entirely within the incommensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase of EuTe4 with no change in the CDW modulation periodicity. We interpret the hysteresis as an unusual switching of the relative CDW phases in different layers, a phenomenon unique to quasi-2D compounds that is not present in either purely 2D or strongly-coupled 3D systems. Our findings challenge the established theories on metastable states in density wave systems, pushing the boundary of understanding hysteretic transitions in a broken-symmetry state.
Charge density waves (CDWs) underpin the electronic properties of many complex materials. Near-equilibrium CDW order is linearly coupled to a periodic, atomic-structural distortion, and the dynamics is understood in terms of amplitude and phase modes . However, at the shortest timescales lattice and charge order may become de-coupled, highlighting the electronic nature of this many-body broken symmetry ground state. Using time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy with sub-30-fs XUV pulses, we have mapped the time- and momentum-dependent electronic structure in photo-stimulated 1T-TaS2, a prototypical two-dimensional charge density wave compound. We find that CDW order, observed as a splitting of the uppermost electronic bands at the Brillouin zone boundary, melts well before relaxation of the underlying structural distortion. Decoupled charge and lattice modulations challenge the view of Fermi Surface nesting as a driving force for charge density wave formation in 1T-TaS2.

We study the electronic structure, magnetic state, and phase stability of paramagnetic BiNiO$_3$ near a pressure-induced Mott insulator-to-metal transition (MIT) by employing a combination of density functional and dynamical mean-field theory. We obt ain that BiNiO$_3$ exhibits an anomalous negative-charge-transfer insulating state, characterized by charge disproportionation of the Bi $6s$ states, with Ni$^{2+}$ ions. Upon a compression of the lattice volume by $sim$4.8%, BiNiO$_3$ is found to make a Mott MIT, accompanied by the change of crystal structure from triclinic $Pbar{1}$ to orthorhombic $Pbnm$. The pressure-induced MIT is associated with the melting of charge disproportionation of the Bi ions, caused by a charge transfer between the Bi $6s$ and O $2p$ states. The Ni sites remain to be Ni$^{2+}$ across the MIT, which is incompatible with the valence-skipping Ni$^{2+}$/Ni$^{3+}$ model. Our results suggest that the pressure-induced change of the crystal structure drives the MIT in BiNiO$_3$.

Femtosecond time-resolved core-level photoemission spectroscopy with a free-electron laser is used to measure the atomic-site specific charge-order dynamics in the charge-density-wave/Mott insulator 1T-TaS2. After strong photoexcitation, a prompt los s of charge order and subsequent fast equilibration dynamics of the electron-lattice system are observed. On the time scale of electron-phonon thermalization, about 1 ps, the system is driven across a phase transition from a long-range charge ordered state to a quasi-equilibrium state with domain-like short-range charge and lattice order. The experiment opens the way to study the nonequilibrium dynamics of condensed matter systems with full elemental, chemical, and atomic site selectivity.
