We measure inelastic collisional cross sections for the ground $^3$F$_2$ state and the excited $^3$P$_0$ state of atomic thorium in cold collisions with $^3$He. We determine for Th ($^3$F$_2$) at 800 mK the ratio $gamma approx 500$ of the momentum-transfer to Zeeman relaxation cross sections for collisions with $^3$He. For Th ($^3$P$_0$), we study electronic inelastic processes and find no quenching even after $10^6$ collisions. We also determine the radiative lifetime of Th ($^3$P$_0$) to be $tau > 130$ ms. This great stability of the metastable state opens up the possibility for further study, including trapping.

We measure the ratio $gamma$ of the momentum-transfer to the vibrational quenching cross section for the X ($^1Sigma^+$), $ u=1$, $mathrm{J=0}$ state of molecular thorium monoxide (ThO) in collisions with atomic $^3$He between 800 mK and 2.4 K. We ob serve indirect evidence for ThO--He van der Waals complex formation, which has been predicted by theory. We determine the 3-body recombination rate constant $Gamma_3$ at 2.4 K, and establish that the binding energy E$_b >$ 4 K.
On the basis of the perturbation theory in the fine structure constant $alpha$ and the ratio of the electron to muon masses we calculate one-loop vacuum polarization and electron vertex corrections and the nuclear structure corrections to the hyperfi ne splitting of the ground state of muonic helium atom $(mu e ^3_2He)$. We obtain total result for the ground state hyperfine splitting $Delta u^{hfs}=4166.471$ MHz which improves the previous calculation of Lakdawala and Mohr due to the account of new corrections of orders $alpha^5$ and $alpha^6$. The remaining difference between our theoretical result and experimental value of the hyperfine splitting lies in the range of theoretical and experimental errors and requires the subsequent investigation of higher order corrections.

The workhorse of atomic physics, quantum electrodynamics, is one of the best-tested theories in physics. However recent discrepancies have shed doubt on its accuracy for complex atomic systems. To facilitate the development of the theory further we a im to measure transition dipole matrix elements of metastable helium (He*) (the ideal 3 body test-bed) to the highest accuracy thus far. We have undertaken a measurement of the `tune-out wavelength which occurs when the contributions to the dynamic polarizability from all atomic transitions sum to zero; thus illuminating an atom with this wavelength of light then produces no net energy shift. This provides a strict constraint on the transition dipole matrix elements without the complication and inaccuracy of other methods. Using a novel atom-laser based technique we have made the first measurement of the tune-out wavelength in metastable helium between the $3^{3}P_{1,2,3}$ and $2^{3}P_{1,2,3}$ states at 413.07(2) nm which compares well with the predicted valuecite{Mitroy2013} of 413.02(9) nm. We have additionally developed many of the methods necessary to improve this measurement to the 100 fm level of accuracy where it will form the most accurate determination of transition rate information ever made in He* and provide a stringent test for atomic QED simulations. We believe this measurement to be one of the most sensitive ever made of an optical dipole potential, able to detect changes in potentials of $sim$200 pK and is widely applicable to other species and areas of atom optics.
Low-energy elastic and inelastic scattering in the Ps(1$s$)-Ps(2$s$) channel is treated in a four-body hyperspherical coordinate calculation. Adiabatic potentials are calculated for triplet-triplet, singlet-singlet, and singlet-triplet spin symmetrie s in the spin representation of coupled electrons and coupled positrons, with total angular momentum $L=0$ and parity equal to $+1$. The s-wave scattering lengths for the asymptotic Ps(1$s$)-Ps(2$s$) channel are calculated for each spin configuration. Results obtained for the s-wave scattering lengths are $a_{mathrm{TT}}=$~$7.3(2)a_0-i0.02(1)a_0$, $a_{mathrm{SS}}=$~$13.2(2)a_0-i0.9(2)a_0$, and $a_{mathrm{ST}}=$~$9.7(2)a_0$ for each spin configuration. Spin recoupling is implemented to extract the scattering lengths for collisions of Ps in different spin configurations through properly symmetrized unitary transformations. Calculations of experimentally relevant scattering lengths and cross-sections are carried-out for Ps atoms initially prepared in different uncoupled spin states.
Two anomalously weak transitions within the $2 ^3{rm S}_1~-~3 ^3{rm P}_J$ manifolds in $^3$He have been identified. Their transition strengths are measured to be 1,000 times weaker than that of the strongest transition in the same group. This dramati c suppression of transition strengths is due to the dominance of the hyperfine interaction over the fine structure interaction. An alternative selection rule based on textit{IS}-coupling (where the nuclear spin is first coupled to the total electron spin) is proposed. This provides qualitative understanding of the transition strengths. It is shown that the small deviations from the textit{IS}-coupling model are fully accounted for by an exact diagonalization of the strongly interacting states.
