We employ a scanning NV-center microscope to perform stray field imaging of bubble magnetic domains in a perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/AlOx trilayer with 6 {AA} of Co. The stray field created by the domain walls is quantitatively mapped with few-nanometer spatial resolution, with a probe-sample distance of about 100 nm. As an example of application, we show that it should be possible to determine the Bloch or Neel nature of the domain walls, which is of crucial importance to the understanding of current-controlled domain wall motion.

We use time-resolved x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (tr-XRMS) at the Co M$_{2,3}$- and Tb O$_1$-edges to study ultrafast demagnetization in an amorphous Co$_{88}$Tb$_{12}$ alloy with stripe domains. Combining the femtosecond temporal with nanomet er spatial resolution of our experiment, we demonstrate that the equilibrium spin texture of the thin film remains unaltered by the optical pump-pulse on ultrashort timescales ($<$1 ps). However, after $simeq$ 4 ps, we observe the onset of a significant domain wall broadening, which we attribute to a reduction of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the system, due to energy transfer to the lattice. Static temperature dependent magnetometry measurements combined with analytical modeling of the magnetic structure of the thin film corroborate this interpretation.
We demonstrate a method of imaging spatially varying magnetic fields using a thin layer of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers at the surface of a diamond chip. Fluorescence emitted by the two-dimensional NV ensemble is detected by a CCD array, from which a vector magnetic field pattern is reconstructed. As a demonstration, AC current is passed through wires placed on the diamond chip surface, and the resulting AC magnetic field patterns are imaged using an echo-based technique with sub-micron resolution over a 140 mu m x 140 mu m field of view, giving single-pixel sensitivity ~100 nT/sqrt{Hz}. We discuss ongoing efforts to further improve sensitivity and potential bioimaging applications such as real-time imaging of activity in functional, cultured networks of neurons.
We report experimental observations of magnetic bubble domain arrays with no apparent translational symmetry. Additionally the results of comparative numerical studies are discussed. Our goal is to present experimental evidence for natural occurence of conformal structures.

We report on a study of an ultrathin topological insulator film with hybridization between the top and bottom surfaces, placed in a quantizing perpendicular magnetic field. We calculate the full Landau level spectrum of the film as a function of the applied magnetic field and the magnitude of the hybridization matrix element, taking into account both the orbital and the Zeeman spin splitting effects of the field. For an undoped film, we find a quantum phase transition between a state with a zero Hall conductivity and a state with a quantized Hall conductivity equal to $e^2/h$, as a function of the magnitude of the applied field. The transition is driven by the competition between the Zeeman and the hybridization energies.

We present a method to map the saturation magnetization of soft ultrathin films with perpendicular anisotropy, and we illustrate it to assess the compositional dependence of the magnetization of CoFeB(1 nm)/MgO films. The method relies on the measure ment of the dipolar repulsion of parallel domain walls that define a linear domain. The film magnetization is linked to the field compressibility of the domain. The method also yields the minimal distance between two walls before their merging, which sets a practical limit to the storage density in spintronic devices using domain walls as storage entities.
