The sensitivity to the mass composition as well as the reconstruction of the energy of the primary particle are explored here by leveraging the features of the radio lateral distribution function. For the purpose of this analysis, a set of events measured with the LOPES experiment is reproduced with the latest CoREAS radio simulation code. Based on simulation predictions, a method which exploits the slope of the radio lateral distribution function is developed (Slope Method) and directly applied on measurements. As a result, the possibility to reconstruct both the energy and the depth of the shower maximum of the cosmic ray air shower using radio data and achieving relatively small uncertainties is presented.

The results on ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) mass composition obtained with the Telescope Array surface detector are presented. The analysis employs the boosted decision tree (BDT) multivariate analysis built upon 14 observables related to bo th the properties of the shower front and the lateral distribution function. The multivariate classifier is trained with Monte-Carlo sets of events induced by the primary protons and iron. An average atomic mass of UHECR is presented for energies $10^{18.0}-10^{20.0} mbox{eV}$. The average atomic mass of primary particles shows no significant energy dependence and corresponds to $langle ln A rangle = 2.0 pm 0.1 (stat.) pm 0.44 (syst.)$. The result is compared to the mass composition obtained by the Telescope Array with $mbox{X}_{mbox{max}}$ technique along with the results of other experiments. Possible systematic errors of the method are discussed.

Using the Auger mass-composition analysis of ultra high energy cosmic rays, based on the shape-fitting of $X_{max}$ distributions, we demonstrate that mass composition and energy spectra measured by Auger, Telescope Array and HiRes can be brought int o good agreement. The shape-fitting analysis of $X_{max}$ distributions shows that the measured sum of proton and Helium fractions, for some hadronic-interaction models, can saturate the total flux. Such p+He model, with small admixture of other light nuclei, naturally follows from cosmology with recombination and reheating phases. The most radical assumption of the presented model is the assumed unreliability of the experimental separation of Helium and protons, which allows to consider He/p ratio as a free parameter. The results presented here show that the models with dominant p+He composition explain well the energy spectrum of the dip in the latest (2015 - 2017) data of Auger and Telescope Array, but have some tension at the highest energies with the expected Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. The Auger-Prime upgrade experiment has a great potential to reject or confirm this model.

The composition of Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) presents strong similarities to the standard (cosmic) composition, but also noticeable differences, the most important being the high isotopic ratio of Ne22/Ne20 which is about 5 times higher in GCR than in the Sun. This ratio provides key information on the GCR origin. We investigate the idea that GCR are accelerated by the forward shocks of supernova explosions, as they run through the presupernova winds of the massive stars and through the interstellar medium. We use detailed wind and core yields of rotating and non-rotating models of massive stars with mass loss, as well as simple models for the properties of the forward shock and of the circumstellar medium. We find that the observed GCR Ne22/Ne20 ratio can be explained if GCR are accelerated only during the early Sedov phase, for shock velocities >1500-1900 km/s. The acceleration efficiency is found to be of the order of 1.e-6 - 1.e-5, i.e. a few particles out of a million encountered by the shock escape the SN at GCR energies. We also show quantitatively that the widely publicized idea that GCR are accelerated in superbubbles fails to account for the high Ne22/Ne20 ratio in GCR
We use a kinetic-equation approach to describe the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic ray protons and nuclei and calculate the expected spectra and mass composition at the Earth for different assumptions on the source injection spectra and chemi cal abundances. When compared with the spectrum, the elongation rate $X_{max}(E)$ and dispersion $sigma(X_{max})$ as observed with the Pierre Auger Observatory, several important consequences can be drawn: a) the injection spectra of nuclei must be very hard, $sim E^{-gamma}$ with $gammasim 1-1.6$; b) the maximum energy of nuclei of charge $Z$ in the sources must be $sim 5Ztimes 10^{18}$ eV, thereby not requiring acceleration to extremely high energies; c) the fit to the Auger spectrum can be obtained only at the price of adding an {it ad hoc} light extragalactic component with a steep injection spectrum ($sim E^{-2.7}$). In this sense, at the ankle ($E_{A}approx 5times 10^{18}$ eV) all the components are of extragalactic origin, thereby suggesting that the transition from Galactic to extragalactic cosmic rays occurs below the ankle. Interestingly, the additional light extragalactic component postulated above compares well, in terms of spectrum and normalization, with the one recently measured by KASCADE-Grande.
It is proposed a new approach for estimating the composition of cosmic rays. It is found that the zenith angle distributions and muon components of EAS for energies E>10^19 eV and E>4.10^19 eV differ from each other. It is shown that the cosmic rays above E>4.10^19 eV is heavier than the cosmic rays at energy E~ 10^19 eV. According to our estimation the SUGAR array detected 8 showers above 10^20 eV. It is concluded that no sign of Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cut off in the spectrum of cosmic rays and all cosmic rays are galactic.
