We consider a 1+3 dimensional spin system. The spin-wave (magnon) field is described by the O(3) non-linear sigma model with a symmetry-breaking potential. This interacts with a slow spin SU(2) doublet Schrodinger fermion. The interaction is described by a generalized nonperturbative Yukawa coupling, and the self-consistency condition is solved with the aid of a non-relativistic Gribov equation. When the Yukawa coupling is sufficiently strong, the solution exhibits supercriticality and soft confinement, in a way that is quite analogous to Gribovs light-quark confinement theory. The solution corresponds to a new type of spin polaron, whose condensation may lead to exotic superconductivity.

We present a top-down string theory holographic model of strongly interacting relativistic 2+1-dimensional fermions, paying careful attention to the discrete symmetries of parity and time reversal invariance. Our construction is based on probe $D7$-b ranes in $AdS_5 times S^5$, stabilized by internal fluxes. We find three solutions, a parity and time reversal invariant conformal field theory which can be viewed as a particular deformation of Coulomb interacting graphene, a parity and time reversal violating but gapless field theory and a system with a parity and time reversal violating charge gap. We show that the Chern-Simons-like electric response function, which is generated perturbatively at one-loop order by parity violating fermions and which is protected by a no-renormalization theorem at orders beyond one loop, indeed appears with the correctly quantized coefficient in the charge gapped theory. In the gapless parity violating solution, the Chern-Simons response function obtains quantum corrections which we compute in the holographic theory.
We examine the possibility of a confinement-deconfinement phase transition at finite temperature in both parity invariant and topologically massive three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. We review an argument showing that the Abelian version of t he Polyakov loop operator is an order parameter for confinement, even in the presence of dynamical electrons. We show that, in the parity invariant case, where the tree-level Coulomb potential is logarithmic, there is a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at a critical temperature ($T_c=e^2/8pi+{cal O}(e^4/m)$, when the ratio of the electromagnetic coupling and the temperature to the electron mass is small). Above $T_c$ the electric charge is not confined and the system is in a Debye plasma phase, whereas below $T_c$ the electric charges are confined by a logarithmic Coulomb potential, qualitatively described by the tree-level interaction. When there is a topological mass, no matter how small, in a strict sense the theory is not confining at any temperature; the model exhibits a screening phase, analogous to that found in the Schwinger model and two-dimensional QCD with massless adjoint matter. However, if the topological mass is much smaller than the other dimensional parameters, there is a temperature for which the range of the Coulomb interaction changes from the inverse topological mass to the inverse electron mass. We speculate that this is a vestige of the BKT transition of the parity-invariant system, separating regions with screening and deconfining behavior.
The Heisenberg-Ising spin ladder is one of the few short-range models showing confinement of elementary excitations without the need of an external field, neither transverse nor longitudinal. This feature makes the model suitable for an experimental realization with ultracold atoms. In this paper, we combine analytic and numerical techniques to precisely characterize its spectrum in the regime of Hamiltonian parameters showing confinement. We find two kinds of particles, which we dub intrachain and interchain mesons, that correspond to bound states of kinks within the same chain or between different ones, respectively. The ultimate physical reasons leading to the existence of two families of mesons is a residual double degeneracy of the ground state: the two types of mesons interpolate either between the same vacuum (intrachain) or between the two different ones (interchain). While the intrachain mesons can also be qualitatively assessed through an effective mean field description and were previously known, the interchain ones are new and they represent general features of spin ladders with confinement.
We study the quark spectrum at nonzero temperature and density near the critical point (CP) of the chiral phase transition incorporating effects of the scalar- and pseudoscalar-density fluctuations in a chiral effective model with a nonzero current q uark mass. It is known that the soft mode associated with the second-order transition at the CP lies in the spacelike region of the scalar-density fluctuation. We find that the soft mode influences the quark spectrum significantly near the CP, resulting in the shift of the quasiquark peak. Effects of the composite stable pions on the quark spectrum near the CP are also discussed.
We study equilibrium shapes and shape transformations of a confined semiflexible chain inside a soft lipid tubule using simulations and continuum theories. The deformed tubular shapes and chain conformations depend on the relative magnitude of their bending moduli. We characterise the collapsed macromolecular shapes by computing statistical quantities that probe the polymer properties at small length scales and report a prolate to toroidal coil transition for stiff chains. Deformed tubular shapes, calculated using elastic theories, agree with simulations. In conjunction with scattering studies, our work may provide a mechanistic understanding of gene encapsulation in soft structures.
