We present the single-crystalline x-ray diffraction study on the Ba4Ru3O10 consisting of the corner-shared Ru3O12 trimers. The crystal structure is re-determined from 78 to 300 K across an antiferromagnetic transition at 105 K. The orthorhombic symmetry (Cmca, space group No. 64) is preserved at all temperatures measured. This structure presents exceptionally long Ru-O distances characterized by a significant distribution within the Ru3O12 trimer. A bond valence sum calculation suggests that the charge disproportionation within the Ru3O12 trimer emerges even at room temperature, which we ascribe to molecular orbital formation in the Ru3O12 trimer, as supported by recent theoretical calculations. Based on the analyzed crystal structure, the electronic states and the nature of the phase transition at 105 K are discussed.

The beryllides MBe13 (M = rare earths and actinides) crystallize in a NaZn13-type cubic structure, which can be categorized as a cage-structured compound. In this study, powder X-ray diffraction measurements have been performed on LaBe13, SmBe13, and UBe13 in the temperature range between 7 and 300 K in order to investigate their crystallographic characteristics systematically. They keep the NaZn13-type cubic structure down to the lowest temperature. We estimated their Debye temperature to be 600 - 750 K from analyses of the temperature dependence of a lattice parameter, being in good agreement with the values reported previously. Rietveld refinements on the obtained powder patterns revealed that the M atom in the 8a site is located in an almost ideal snub cube formed by 24 Be atoms in the 96i site, whose caged structure is unchanged even at the low temperatures. In addition, it is argued from the temperature variation of an isotropic mean-square displacement parameter that the MBe13 compounds commonly have a low-energy phonon mode, which can be described by a model assuming an Einstein oscillation of the M atom with a characteristic temperature of ~ 160 K.
We use neutron scattering to study the spin and lattice structure on single crystals of SrFe2As2, the parent compound of the FeAs based superconductor (Sr,K)Fe2As2. We find that SrFe2As2 exhibits an abrupt structural phase transitions at 220K, where the structure changes from tetragonal with lattice parameters c > a = b to orthorhombic with c > a > b. At almost the same temperature, Fe spins in SrFe2As2 develop a collinear antiferromagnetic structure along the orthorhombic a-axis with spin direction parallel to this a-axis. These results are consistent with earlier work on the RFeAsO (R = rare earth elements) families of materials and on BaFe2As2, and therefore suggest that static antiferromagnetic order is ubiquitous for the parent compound of these FeAs-based high-transition temperature superconductors.
We have investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore iridates Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using a combination of resonant elastic x-ray scattering, x-ray powder diffraction, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIX S). The structural parameters of Eu2Ir2O7 have been examined as a function of temperature and applied pressure, with a particular emphasis on regions of the phase diagram where electronic and magnetic phase transitions have been reported. We find no evidence of crystal symmetry change over the range of temperatures (~6 to 300 K) and pressures (~0.1 to 17 GPa) studied. We have also investigated the electronic and magnetic excitations in single crystal samples of Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using high resolution Ir L3-edge RIXS. In spite of very different ground state properties, we find these materials exhibit qualitatively similar excitation spectra, with crystal field excitations at ~3-5 eV, spin-orbit excitations at ~0.5-1 eV, and broad low-lying excitations below ~0.15 eV. In Eu2Ir2O7 we observe highly damped magnetic excitations at ~45 meV, which display significant momentum dependence. We compare these results with recent dynamical structure factor calculations.
Unusual phases and phase transitions are seen at the magnetic-nonmagnetic boundary in Ce, Eu and Yb-based compounds. EuNi$_2$P$_{2}$ is a very unusual valence fluctuating Eu system, because at low temperatures the Eu valence stays close to 2.5 instea d of approaching an integer value. Eu valence and thus the magnetic property in this system can be tuned by Ge substitution in P site as EuNi$_2$Ge$_{2}$ is known to exhibit antiferromagnetc (AFM) ordering of divalent Eu moments with $T_N$ = 30 K. We have grown EuNi$_2$(P$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$)$_2$ (0.0 $leq$ $x$ $leq$ 0.5) single crystals and studied their magnetic, thermodynamic and transport properties. Increasing Ge doping to $x >$ 0.4 results in a well-defined AFM ordered state with $T_N$ = 12 K for $x$ = 0.5. Moreover, the reduced value of magnetic entropy for $x$ = 0.5 at $T_N$ suggests the presence of valance fluctuation/ Kondo effect in this compound. Interestingly, the specific heat exhibits an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient upon Ge doping. Subsequently, electronic structure calculations lead to a non-integral valence in EuNi$_2$P$_{2}$ but a stable divalent Eu state in EuNi$_2$Ge$_{2}$ which is in good agreement with experimental results.
The magneto-optical technique has been employed to observe spontaneous ferromagnetic domain structures in La0.78Ca0.22MnO3 single crystals. The magnetic domain topology was found to be correlated with the intrinsic twin structure of the investigated crystals. With decreasing temperature the regular network of ferromagnetic domains undergoes significant changes resulting in apparent rotation of the domain walls in the temperature range of 70-150 K. The apparent rotation of the domain walls can be understood in terms of the Jahn-Teller deformation of the orthorhombic unit cell, accompanied by additional twinning.
