We study the problem of time-dependent photoionization of low density gaseous nebulae subjected to sudden changes in the intensity of ionizing radiation. To this end, we write a computer code that solves the full time-dependent energy balance, ionization balance, and radiation transfer equations in a self-consistent fashion for a simplified pure hydrogen case. It is shown that changes in the ionizing radiation yield ionization/thermal fronts that propagate through the cloud, but the propagation times and response times to such fronts vary widely and non-linearly from the illuminated face of the cloud to the ionization front (IF). Ionization/thermal fronts are often supersonic, and in slabs initially in pressure equilibrium such fronts yield large pressure imbalances that are likely to produce important dynamical effects in the cloud. Further, we studied the case of periodic variations in the ionizing flux. It is found that the physical conditions of the plasma have complex behaviors that differ from any steady-state solutions. Moreover, even the time average ionization and temperature is different from any steady-state case. This time average is characterized by over-ionization and a broader IF with respect to the steady-state solution for a mean value of the radiation flux. Around the time average of physical conditions there is large dispersion in instantaneous conditions, particularly across the IF, which increases with the period of radiation flux variations. Moreover, the variations in physical conditions are asynchronous along the slab due to the combination of non-linear propagation times for thermal/ionization fronts and equilibration times.

(abridged) Non-ionizing stellar continua are a source of photons for continuum pumping in the hydrogen Lyman transitions. In the environments where these transitions are optically thick, deexcitation occurs through higher series lines, so that the fl ux in these lines has a fluorescent contribution in addition to recombination; in particular, Balmer emissivities are systematically enhanced above case B. The effectiveness of such mechanism in HII regions and the adequacy of photoionization models as a tool to study it are the two main focuses of this work. We find that photoionization models of H II regions illuminated by low-resolution population synthesis models significantly overpredict the fluorescent contribution to the Balmer lines. Conversely, photoionization models in which the non-ionizing part of the continuum is omitted or is not transferred underpredict the fluorescent contribution to the Balmer lines, producing a bias of similar amplitude in the opposite direction. In this paper, we carry out realistic estimations of the fluorescent Balmer intensity and discuss the variations to be expected as the simulated observational setup and the stellar populations parameters are varied. In all the cases explored, we find that fluorescent excitation provides a significant contribution. We also show that differential fluorescent enhancement may produce line-of-sight differences in the Balmer decrement, mimicking interstellar extinction. Fluorescent excitation emerges from our study as a small but important mechanism for the enhancement of Balmer lines, which should be taken into account in the abundance analysis of photoionized regions, particularly in the case of high-precision applications such as the determination of primordial helium.

The understanding of astronomical nebulae is based on observational data (images, spectra, 3D data-cubes) and theoretical models. In this review, I present my very biased view on photoionization modeling of planetary nebulae, focusing on 1D multi-com ponent models, on 3D models and on big database of models.
Evolved stars are primary sources for the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dust grains. Their circumstellar chemistry is usually designated as either oxygen-rich or carbon-rich, although dual-dust chemistry objects, whose infr ared spectra reveal both silicate- and carbon-dust features, are also known. The exact origin and nature of this dual-dust chemistry is not yet understood. Spitzer-IRS mid-infrared spectroscopic imaging of the nearby, oxygen-rich planetary nebula NGC6720 reveals the presence of the 11.3 micron aromatic (PAH) emission band. It is attributed to emission from neutral PAHs, since no band is observed in the 7 to 8 micron range. The spatial distribution of PAHs is found to closely follow that of the warm clumpy molecular hydrogen emission. Emission from both neutral PAHs and warm H2 is likely to arise from photo-dissociation regions associated with dense knots that are located within the main ring. The presence of PAHs together with the previously derived high abundance of free carbon (relative to CO) suggest that the local conditions in an oxygen-rich environment can also become conducive to in-situ formation of large carbonaceous molecules, such as PAHs, via a bottom-up chemical pathway. In this scenario, the same stellar source can enrich the interstellar medium with both oxygen-rich dust and large carbonaceous molecules.

We measure the photoionization cross-section of vibrationally excited levels in the S2 state of azulene by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. At the wavelengths studied (349-265 nm in the pump) the transient signals exhibit two distinct and well-de fined behaviours: (i) Short-term (on the order of a picosecond) polarization dependent transients and (ii) longer (10 ps - 1 ns) time-scale decays. This letter focuses on the short time transient. In contrast to an earlier study by Diau et al.22 [J. Chem. Phys. 110 (1999) 9785.] we unambiguously assign the fast initial decay signal to rotational dephasing of the initial alignment created by the pump transition.
Some core-collapse supernovae are likely to be efficient cosmic-ray accelerators up to the PeV range, and therefore, to potentially play an important role in the overall Galactic cosmic-ray population. The TeV gamma-ray domain can be used to study pa rticle acceleration in the multi-TeV and PeV range. This motivates the study of the detectability of such supernovae by current and future gamma-ray facilities. The gamma-ray emission of core-collapse supernovae strongly depends on the level of the two-photon annihilation process: high-energy gamma-ray photons emitted at the expanding shock wave following the supernova explosion can interact with soft photons from the supernova photosphere through the pair production channel, thereby strongly suppressing the flux of gamma rays leaving the system. In the case of SN 1993J, whose photospheric and shock-related parameters are well measured, we calculate the temporal evolution of the expected gamma-ray attenuation by accounting for the temporal and geometrical effects. We find the attenuation to be of about $10$ orders of magnitude in the first few days after the SN explosion. The probability of detection of a supernova similar to SN 1993J with the Cherenkov Telescope Array is highest if observations are performed either earlier than 1 day, or later than 10 days after the explosion, when the gamma-ray attenuation decreases to about $2$ orders of magnitude.
