We investigate the validity and accuracy of weak-noise (saddle-point or instanton) approximations for piecewise-smooth stochastic differential equations (SDEs), taking as an illustrative example a piecewise-constant SDE, which serves as a simple model of Brownian motion with solid friction. For this model, we show that the weak-noise approximation of the path integral correctly reproduces the known propagator of the SDE at lowest order in the noise power, as well as the main features of the exact propagator with higher-order corrections, provided that the singularity of the path integral associated with the non-smooth SDE is treated with some heuristics. We also show that, as in the case of smooth SDEs, the deterministic paths of the noiseless system correctly describe the behaviour of the non-smooth SDE in the low-noise limit. Finally, we consider a smooth regularisation of the piecewise-constant SDE and study to which extent this regularisation can rectify some of the problems encountered when dealing with discontinuous drifts and singularities in SDEs.

In the present paper, we study the number of zeros of the first order Melnikov function for piecewise smooth polynomial differential system, to estimate the number of limit cycles bifurcated from the period annulus of quadratic isochronous centers, w hen they are perturbed inside the class of all piecewise smooth polynomial differential systems of degree $n$ with the straight line of discontinuity $x=0$. An explicit and fairly accurate upper bound for the number of zeros of the first order Melnikov functions with respect to quadratic isochronous centers $S_1, S_2$ and $S_3$ is provided. For quadratic isochronous center $S_4$, we give a rough estimate for the number of zeros of the first order Melnikov function due to its complexity. Furthermore, we improve the upper bound associated with $S_4$, from $14n+11$ in cite{LLLZ}, $12n-1$ in cite{SZ} to $[(5n-5)/2]$, when it is perturbed inside all smooth polynomial differential systems of degree $n$. Besides, some evidence on the equivalence of the first order Melnikov function and the first order Averaged function for piecewise smooth polynomial differential systems is found.
In this article we study the existence of limit cycles in families of piecewise smooth differential equations having the unit circle as discontinuity region. We consider families presenting singularities of center or saddle type, visible or invisible , as well as the case without singularities. We establish an upper bound for the number of limit cycles and give examples showing that the maximum number of limit cycles can be reached. We also discuss the existence of homoclinic cycles for such differential equations in the saddle-center case.
Nonlinear stochastic differential equations provide one of the mathematical models yielding 1/f noise. However, the drawback of a single equation as a source of 1/f noise is the necessity of power-law steady-state probability density of the signal. I n this paper we generalize this model and propose a system of two coupled nonlinear stochastic differential equations. The equations are derived from the scaling properties necessary for the achievement of 1/f noise. The first equation describes the changes of the signal, whereas the second equation represents a fluctuating rate of change. The proposed coupled stochastic differential equations allows us to obtain 1/f spectrum in a wide range of frequencies together with the almost arbitrary steady-state density of the signal.
Random perturbations applied in tandem to an ensemble of oscillating objects can synchronize their motion. We study multiple copies of an arbitrary dynamical system in a stable limit cycle, described via a standard phase reduction picture. The copies differ only in their arbitrary phases $phi$. Weak, randomly-timed external impulses applied to all the copies can synchronize these phases over time. Beyond a threshold strength there is no such convergence to a common phase. Instead, using statistical sampling, we find remarkable erratic synchronization: successive impulses produce stochastic fluctuations in the phase distribution $q(phi)$, ranging from near-perfect to more random synchronization. The sampled entropies of these phase distributions themselves form a steady-state ensemble, whose average can be made arbitrarily negative by tuning the impulse strength. A stochastic dynamics model for the entropys evolution accounts for the observed exponential distribution of entropies and for the stochastic synchronization phenomenon.
We solve the large deviations of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in one dimension at short time by introducing an approach which combines field theoretical, probabilistic and integrable techniques. We expand the program of the weak noise theor y, which maps the large deviations onto a non-linear hydrodynamic problem, and unveil its complete solvability through a connection to the integrability of the Zakharov-Shabat system. Exact solutions, depending on the initial condition of the KPZ equation, are obtained using the inverse scattering method and a Fredholm determinant framework recently developed. These results, explicit in the case of the droplet geometry, open the path to obtain the complete large deviations for general initial conditions.
