The space- and time-dependent response of many-body quantum systems is the most informative aspect of their emergent behaviour. The dynamical structure factor, experimentally measurable using neutron scattering, can map this response in wavevector and energy with great detail, allowing theories to be quantitatively tested to high accuracy. Here, we present a comparison between neutron scattering measurements on the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3, and recent state-of-the-art theoretical methods based on integrability and density matrix renormalization group simulations. The unprecedented quantitative agreement shows that precise descriptions of strongly correlated states at all distance, time and temperature scales are now possible, and highlights the need to apply these novel techniques to other problems in low-dimensional magnetism.

Inelastic neutron-scattering and finite-temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations are used to investigate the spin excitation spectrum of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg spin chain compound K$_2$CuSO$_4$Cl$_2$ at several temperature s in a magnetic field near saturation. Critical correlations characteristic of the predicted $z=2$, $d=1$ quantum phase transition occurring at saturation are shown to be consistent with the observed neutron spectra. The data is well described with a scaling function computed using a free fermion description of the spins, valid close to saturation, and the corresponding scaling limits. One of the most prominent non-universal spectral features of the data is a novel thermally activated longitudinal mode that remains underdamped across most of the Brillouin zone.
Unlike most quantum systems which rapidly become incoherent as temperature is raised, strong correlations persist at elevated temperatures in $S=1/2$ dimer magnets, as revealed by the unusual asymmetric lineshape of their excitations at finite temper atures. Here we quantitatively explore and parameterize the strongly correlated magnetic excitations at finite temperatures using the high resolution inelastic neutron scattering on the model compound BaCu$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ which we show to be an alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin$-1/2$ chain. Comparison to state of the art computational techniques shows excellent agreement over a wide temperature range. Our findings hence demonstrate the possibility to quantitatively predict coherent behavior at elevated temperatures in quantum magnets.
Using numerical diagonalization techniques, we explore the effect of local and bond disorder on the finite temperature spin and thermal conductivities of the one dimensional anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. High-temperature results for local di sorder show that the dc conductivties are finite, apart from the uncorrelated - XY case - where dc transport vanishes. Moreover, at strong disorder, we find finite dc conductivities at all temperatures $T$, except T=0. The low frequency conductivities are characterized by a nonanalytic cusp shape. Similar behavior is found for bond disorder.
A new nonlinear integral equation (NLIE) describing the thermodynamics of the Heisenberg spin chain is derived based on the t-W relation of the quantum transfer matrices. The free energy of the system in a magnetic field is thus obtained by solving t he NLIE. This method can be generalized to other lattice quantum integrable models. Taking the SU(3)-invariant quantum spin chain as an example, we construct the corresponding NLIEs and compute the free energy. The present results coincide exactly with those obtained via other methods previously.
We communicate results on correlation functions for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-chain in two particularly important cases: (a) for the infinite chain at arbitrary finite temperature $T$, and (b) for finite chains of arbitrary length $L$ in the ground-sta te. In both cases we present explicit formulas expressing the short-range correlators in a range of up to seven lattice sites in terms of a single function $omega$ encoding the dependence of the correlators on $T$ ($L$). These formulas allow us to obtain accurate numerical values for the correlators and derived quantities like the entanglement entropy. By calculating the low $T$ (large $L$) asymptotics of $omega$ we show that the asymptotics of the static correlation functions at any finite distance are $T^2$ ($1/L^2$) terms. We obtain exact and explicit formulas for the coefficients of the leading order terms for up to eight lattice sites.
